'Toys are them': The world of priceless vintage collectibles

DNA Sunday, 2 August 2015 - 7:05am IST | Place: Mumbai |

Mysore, 1996: Neil and Clyde D'Costa walk into a toy store and buy miniatures of a 1992 Ferrari 456GT and 1989 Mercedes-Benz 500SL. It's a purchase that sets in motion India's largest, most enviable collection of scale model cars.

Before their assortment goes on to become 1,752-strong, the cars are placed on the first floor of their home. But this area is insufficient for an ever-burgeoning collection, and matriarch Tessy D'Costa encourages her sons to give their miniatures a home they deserve. So in 2002, a 720sqft Mysore institution known as Autofest City is set up in a separate building the D'Costas aptly name Tessy Block.

Hi there - I do like detailed 1:64s, but have a collection of only those I can get here in India - mostly GreenLights (about 20), few 1:72 Hongwell, and 1 each of Auto Art and Minichamps. Your collection looks great. In addition to general detailing, I generally prefer models with rubber tyres, plastic lights (not painted) and having external rear-view mirrors for realistic quotient. I see most Johnny Lighting and AutoWord models are without external rear-view mirrors, which i admit is to an extent is asking too much in such a small scale.

If I may ask, where did you get most of your models from?

I nowadays satisfy my model cravings by buying 1:55 models of Siku (marketed by Funskool), which even though are not as well detailed as the 1:64s in your collection, are fairly decent in their own right, considering they cost between Rs 175 and 250 only. Most have opening doors as well - including gull-wing for 300 SL, SLS AMG, & the fairly rare Gumpert Apollo. Plus one gets rubber tyres, plastic lights and external rear-view mirrors, and even fairly authentic logo stampings of automakers.

Hi Jessie,

Where do you get Greenlights in India? Would love to see them
I agree with you. I also look for models with rubber tyres, plastic lights and mirrors. The AutoWorld 1:64 scale goes a bit further. Even the engine blocks are 1:64. The scale extends down to the tyres. I have all the Autoworlds released till now (96 of them). I have opened five of them. The Cadillac was showcased earlier. Here are the other four:

1966 Mercury Comet Caliente
1969 Chevy Kingswood Estate
1967 Cadillac Eldorado
1969 Pontiac Firebird

I also love the SIKU trucks and tractors. Here is my SIKU collection (about 70-80):

Re: The Scale Model Thread

Beautiful. Where did you buy it from? What make?

You have got to do something about the wires. Not safe. Use a rubber band / gem clip to keep them in place
