The M1128 Mobile Gun System (MGS) was an eight-wheeled armored car of the Stryker armored fighting vehicle family, mounting a 105 mm tank gun, based on the Canadian LAV III light-armored vehicle manufactured by General Dynamics Land Systems for the U.S. Army. The Stryker MGS was retired at the end of 2022, due in part to the expense and difficulty of maintaining and upgrading the autoloader.
Yet another addition to your collection. That piece looks so good I could eat it:-) eye catching details. The Stryker as you may know is a Swiss Mowag design called Piranha & now license built in several Western countries and adopted by 20+ armies. In terms of layout, built in survivability and ergonomics it is IMHO better than the Russian BTR 80.
Quote:
The M1128 Stryker Mobile Gun System (MGS) was designed to provide direct fire support for infantry units. The main gun provided direct fire in support of infantry, engaging stationary and mobile enemy targets, such as bunkers to create a combined arms effect of overmatched firepower that improves survivability of the combat team. The M1128 was specially designed for low-intensity combats and takes some of the main battle tank roles.
Very interesting concept of marrying a big gun to a wheeled lightly armoured vehicle. A lower mobility alternative to a light tank but one which is easily air portable. Tanks and wheeled armoured vehicles are always a compromise between firepower vs terrain mobility vs armour protection.
Quote:
The M1128 MGS is armed with a M68A1E4 105 mm rifled tank gun. It is a modified version of the tank gun, used on the M1 Abrams and M60 series main battle tanks. This gun is fitted with a muzzle brake and an autoloader.
This was the British 105mm that first saw service with the later marks of the Centurion and has become, and still is, the standard for a 105mm gun. Without the muzzle brake, which reduces the effectiveness of the gun, the MGS would topple over!
Quote:
It was the first time when a US military vehicle of this class was fitted with automatic ammunition loading system.
US, UK & Germany have stayed away from auto loaders. Russia, China, France and India have embraced them. This design as illustrated in the video is a derivative of the AMX-13 French tank.

1:48 Ling-Temco-Vought M270 MLRS (Multiple Launch Rocket System)21st Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, US Army 1991 Gulf War
On the evening of February 13, 1991, on an arid patch of land where the borders of Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait meet, a group of 10 armored vehicles positioned itself along a two-mile stretch of desert.

Dubbed Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (MLRS), the mobile rocket launchers were the newest weapons in the U.S. Army’s arsenal, a sophisticated artillery gun designed to fire more warheads faster and farther than any of its predecessors.

Their mission was to strike enemy defensive positions from a distance at a furious pace, effectively fragmenting the Iraqi army into smaller units, which could then be engaged by U.S. ground forces.

When the go sign was given that evening, signaling the first official combat launch of the M270 MLRS, all doubts were instantly vanquished.

The battery, firing in concert as a single unit, launched more than 100 rockets in a single minute, pummeling targets in southern Iraq with unprecedented accuracy.

In the coming days, relentless attacks from MLRS vehicles would demoralize Iraqi soldiers on the ground, ushering in a quick and decisive victory for U.S. forces in the Gulf.

Once unleashed, Iraqi soldiers quickly dubbed the MLRS missiles “steel rain.” The system’s accuracy led many Iraqi artillery officers to stay in their bunkers, making it easier for U.S. ground forces to slip in and capture enemy positions.

The 21st Field Artillery Regiment with their M270s served in Operation Desert Storm as the 1st Cavalry Division's general support MLRS battery.

MLRS
A multiple rocket launcher (MRL) or multiple launch rocket system (MLRS) is a type of rocket artillery system that contains multiple launchers which are fixed to a single platform, and shoots its rocket ordnance in a fashion similar to a volley gun. Rockets are self-propelled in flight and have different capabilities than conventional artillery shells, such as longer effective range, lower recoil, typically considerably higher payload than a similarly sized gun artillery platform, or even carrying multiple warheads.

The M270 Multiple Launch Rocket System (M270 MLRS) is an American-developed armored, self-propelled, multiple rocket launcher.

The U.S. Army variant of the MLRS vehicle is based on the chassis of the Bradley Fighting Vehicle. The first M270s were delivered in 1983. The MLRS were subsequently adopted by several NATO countries and other countries. The MLRS first saw service with the United States in the 1991 Gulf War. The MLRS has been upgraded to fire guided missiles, and has been used by Ukraine in the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The MLRS launcher unit comprises an M270 launcher loaded with 12 rockets, packaged in two six-rocket pods. The launcher, which is mounted on a stretched Bradley chassis, is a highly automated self-loading and self-aiming system. It contains a fire control computer that integrates the vehicle and rocket launching operations. Without leaving the cab, the crew of three (driver, gunner and section chief) can fire up to twelve MLRS rockets in less than 60 seconds.

MLRS employs the "shoot and scoot" principle to limit vulnerability to counter-battery fire. In addition to the M77 dual purpose conventional submunition equipped with 644 high explosive grenades for anti-personnel and light vehicle engagements, the system can deliver the West German-developed AT2 scatterable mine warhead and has the potential for delivering other warheads.

A growth program is under way to add the extended range MLRS (ER-MLRS), which will increase the current range of the basic rocket from 31.8 kilometers (km) to a new range of approximately 50 km. The Guided MLRS (GMLRS), an additional combat support munition, is a modification to further enhance the range and accuracy of the ER-MLRS. The M270 launcher accommodates the MLRS Family of Munitions (MFOM), including the Army Tactical Missile System (Army TACMS). MLRS is co-produced by the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, and Italy.

1:48 AM General M1113 HMMWV(High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle - colloquial: Humvee)
The AM General HMMWV (High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle), commonly referred to as a Humvee, was introduced to the Military in the 1980’s and soon became popular as a military tactical vehicle. The Humvee was used heavily in the Gulf War of 1991, where it navigated the treacherous desert terrain, as well as the more recent Iraq war.

In 1981 the US government awarded AM General the contract for 55,000 HMMWVs. This High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV or Humvee) has assumed the military role previously filled by Jeep and is produced in several configurations: command and control systems, field ambulance, ammunition and troop and general cargo transport. Optional equipment includes a winch and supplemental armor. Variant armament carriers provide mounting and firing capabilities for heavy machine guns. The Humvee is equipped with a high performance diesel engine, automatic transmission and four wheel drive and is air transportable and droppable from a variety of aircraft.

In 1989, the Humvee had its baptism of fire in Panama. 30 years later, it is still in use around the world. Shown here in the M1115 version, this Expanded Capacity Vehicle (ECV) has an armed turret and more space for soldiers

Re: Scale Models - Aircraft, Battle Tanks & Ships

1:50 T-55AM "343" Goldeneye
A semi-fictional model, this T-55AM "343" featured in the 1995 James Bond 007 movie - Goldeneye.

The T-55AM and T-55AM2 were upgrades of the T-55A, which appeared during the late 1970s and early 1980s to address the need for additional protection and firepower against the threat of man-portable ATGMs and more powerful RPG type weaponry, along with extending the service life of a numerous but increasingly obsolete design.

The T-55AM was equipped with the "Volna" fire control system and 1K13 BOM guidance system allowing use of the 9K116-1 "Bastion" ATGM; KTD-2 LRF fitted over the main gun; an upgraded suspension and T-72 style RMSh tracks; more powerful V-55U engine; “Tucha” smoke grenade launchers; rubber full-length side skirts; and additional armor protection in the form of applique "BDD" modules (also know as "brow" or "horseshoe" armor) on the turret cheeks and hull front.

Enter the T-55 in the movie Goldeneye
After being framed for the murder of Russian Defence Minister Dmitri Mishkin by General Ourumov, soldiers chase the fleeing James Bond into a munitions-filled courtyard. In an attempt to pursue Ourumov and the captive Natalya Simonova, 007 steals a Russian T-55 tank and chases after the General's car, destroying much of St. Petersburg in the process. After evading the Russian authorities, Bond finally tracks the pair to a train yard where Ourumov and Natalya board Alec Trevelyan's Soviet Missile Train. Unable to stop them, 007 intercepts the train further down the tracks at the mouth of a tunnel and uses the tank to derail the train; destroying the T-55 in the process.

This tank chase was partly filmed on location in St. Petersburg and partly at Leavesden Film Studios in Hertfordshire, England. An ex- East German Army T-54/55 tank, on loan from the East England Military Museum, was modified with the addition of fake Explosive Reactive Armour (ERA) panels. To avoid destroying the pavement on the city streets of St. Petersburg, the steel off-road tracks of the T-54/55 were replaced with the rubber-shoed tracks from a British Chieftain tank. The T-55 Tank used in the film is now on permanent display at Old Buckenham Airport where the East England Military Museum is based.

T-55A & T-55AM

The bigger 1:43 T-55 "460" is the original T-55A variant while the smaller 1:50 T-55 "343" is an upgraded T-55AM variant.

Externally, T-55AM differed from the standard T-55A with distinguishing features like smoke grenade launchers on the turret, side skirts & ERA panels on the turret and the body.

Great addition to your collection! I didn't notice the two T-55s were of different scales till I reread your post. I guess in vehicles there are a wide range of scales while in aircraft you have the standard 1:48, 1:72 for military aircraft and 1:200, 1:400 for airliners.

The T-55 seems to be still in action:

Slovenia to Supply 28 M-55S Main Battle Tanks to Ukraine

The Republic of Slovenia will send 28 M-55S main battle tanks to Ukraine. M-55S is a T-55 modernization developed by the STO RAVNE company and engineers of the Israeli company Elbit. Slovenia modernized 30 T-55 tanks in the inventory of its armed forces. The last T-55 was modernized to the M-55S standard in May 1999.

Hearty congratulations on both these outstanding scale models.

I could write forever on the greatness of the T-55 and how the T-55AM/AM2 are still the best medium tanks around - without doubt a tribute to its designers. The T-54/T-55 was the defining tank of the 1940s and 1950s. It was the first to sport a 100mm gun when the Americans were fitting 90mm's on their Patton's and the British the 20 pounder {84mm} on the Centurion. It was the first to field external rear mounted fuel tanks*; the first to be fitted with wet ammunition tanks ie ammo holds designed to carry fuel in the space between the rounds. This increased fuel capacity*; the first to be able to create its own smoke barrier by mixing fuel vapour with the exhaust - a feature all Russian tanks carry even today.

The T-54/55's performance did away with the earlier differentiation of light, medium and heavy tanks and become the USSRs first main battle tank.

The Indian Army has used their T-54s and T-55s extensively in its conflicts with Pakistan in 1965 and 1971. Following were the notable victories:

1. The first meeting of the T-55 with enemy tanks occurred in the area of Garibpur on November 22, 1971. Indian T-55 tanks destroyed 3 Pakistani M24 Chaffee tanks in the area.

2. On December 10–11, 1971 during the Battle of Nainakot, Indian T-55s in two battles destroyed 9 Pakistani M47/48 tanks, without any loss.

3. Battle of Basantar or the Battle of Barapind (December 4–16, 1971) was one of the vital battles fought as part of the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 in the western sector of India. India had destroyed close to 46 M48 tanks and losing only 10 tanks in the process.

*Both these features used to be strongly criticized in the Western books & magazines on tanks of the 1960s/1970s era. Today all Western designs have these features!

Probably the greatest 4WD to come in after the WW2 Jeep. Its engine rating of 190 bhp tells us how over powered our everyday cars are

The model is very well detailed and your photography as always is outstanding. Rocket artillery for long range counter attack is here to stay as evidenced by the M270 and our own Pinaka system and the Russian Smerch. More casualties take place on a battlefield by artillery fire than by any other source.

Thanks for sharing. I see very little information online about these battles unless you specifically search for it on some obscure website or some books by Indian authors or some rare Russian Cold war books.

If you search anything about Russian tanks online all you see is how one Israeli tank destroyed 100 Arab tanks or how one US APC destroyed 10 Iraqi tanks

With modern Western Tanks being sent to Ukraine I'm eagerly waiting to see their "invincible" record continue

Maybe the Leopards will end up the same way the Tigers and Panthers did...

If the West are sending refurbished Leopard 1's then they are at grave risk. If fully up to date Leopard 2's then I'd say it will be a match of equals. A T-90 in the hands of an Arab army is very different from a T-90 in the hands of say the Indian Army! Tactics, training and co-ordination are prime. Nothing can replace that. Western military press has always ignored Indian actions or been biased. Part of the reason is our own poor communication and covering everything under the 'confidential' ink rubber stamp. For example the Indian Army or Air force have never published their own account of even 1971 - half a century has gone by. At least the Indian Navy released a three part series on its history till c.1999 compiled painstakingly by the Late Vice Admiral G.N. Hiranandani. Even the auto-loader first introduced by the T-72 was strongly criticized in Western journals but now the French Leclerc has it and the Chinese too seem to like it in all their designs. To the credit of the Russians, at least where tank designs go they have always led the world with the size and power of the gun from being the first to move up to 100mm {T-55} to 115mm {T-62} to 125mm {T-72} and being the first to move to smooth bore main armament and the first to introduce missiles fired from the main gun. The last mentioned is a force multiplier given that the missile can be smart and self guided. They were also the first to introduce laser disrupters.

The last mentioned is a force multiplier given that the missile can be smart and self guided. They were also the first to introduce laser disrupters.
I think Leopard 2 is a heavy tank (62-66 tonnes) while the T-90 is much lighter at around 46 tonnes. Operating such a heavy tank across bridges, mud and narrow roads will be a nightmare for Ukraine that too such a small number. The logistic challenges of transporting, recovering and repairing such a vehicle will be another problem as the heaviest tank they have currently is around 45 tonnes, they would need new vehicles to transport these. Another problem is the servicing, maintenance and ammunition of these vehicles which has nothing common with all the other tanks they operate. Crew training is another area of concern.

But it looks like we won't see any in combat anytime soon:

Repaired German Leopard tanks for Ukraine ready in 2024 at earliest, armsmaker says

BERLIN, Jan 15 (Reuters) - German armsmaker Rheinmetall (RHMG.DE) could deliver repaired Leopard 2 battle tanks to Ukraine in 2024 at the earliest and would need a confirmed order to begin repairs, its chief executive was quoted as saying by Bild newspaper on Sunday.

It is said that the T-55 was built so tough that if there were to be Armageddon tomorrow, the T-55 would be one of the few things that would still work.

Apart from Narayan Sir's own mind, which is an encyclopedia in itself, there are a few 2-3 liner mentions of those battles here and there in a few books, but nothing concrete.

I wish more is revealed and written about those battles.

Re: Scale Models - Aircraft, Battle Tanks & Ships

Air India L749 Constellation VT-DAO & Air India DC-3 Dakota VT-DRO (Fictional)

Tintin faithfuls would be able to immediately identify these two Air India aircraft and the figurines from "Tintin in Tibet". Needless to say, the aircraft registrations were fictional but they did carry Air India's markings and Air India did operate DC-3s & Constellations.

Tintin learns that his friend Chang has been involved in a plane crash, and that there were no survivors. But some powerful and vivid dreams convince Tintin that his friend is still alive. Tintin sets off to rescue Chang. On this adventure Tintin is accompanied as always by his faithful companions Snowy and Captain Haddock.

They arrive in India on VT-DAO, a fictional Air India L749 Constellation. Later, it is revealed that Chang was flying on VT-DRO- an Air India DC-3 Dakota that crashes in the Himalayas with Chang being the lone survivor of the crash.

Difficult to classify these models as accurate aircraft scale models that we are accustomed to in this thread(as these are scaleless), but these have the a connection to Air India & India in the Tintin series that as a kid I used to read and possibly had the entire set of Tintin's Adventures, which over time sadly got lost or were given away. The figurines - Capt. Haddock( walking with a bag in hand) & Chang(shivering in the snow) are in the pose, as illustrated in the book.

The DC-3 & Chang figurine combination was a gift from my wife on my birthday. The L749 & Capt Haddock figurine combination was a gift too, but I am yet to figure out who gifted it (as both these arrived in separate boxes)

So very cute. Wonderful adds to your collection. You are on a roll with a vengeance from T-55s to Constellations.
That Lockheed 749 and later the 1049 defined air travel for a decade from late 1940s to late 1950s with the first pressurized cabin in an airliner, one of the first fully air conditioned cabins, a full galley and the ability to fly above the weather. Till 1948 air travel was noisy, very bumpy, cold {inside the cabin} and could leave you short of breath above 6000 feet. The 749 changed all that.

Fun fact: In 1956 my father travelled as a passenger by air for the first time,London to Bombay, in a Lockheed 1049. He was a naval officer. The Navy instructed him to be dressed in a lounge suit and tie as he was travelling by air on Govt work. Such were the mores of that time.

Re: Scale Models - Aircraft, Battle Tanks & Ships

BAe Sea Harrier::Indian Navy, carrier borne V/STOL fighter::1:48

This is a 'show a bit of leg honey' teaser campaign. I'll write a detailed note once the model arrives. These are some excellent photos taken by Basu Roy the maker and creator of this detailed 1:48 piece. It is about a foot in length and armed with Magic heat seeking AAMs on the outers and a Sea Eagle anti-ship missile on one wing inner and a fuel tank on the other. 30 Sea Harriers served with the IN onboard INS Vikrant and then INS Viraat

With this I continue my quest for collecting customized IAF/IN models. To this I'll soon add Army Aviation Corps models too.

My thanks to member Basu Roy for this talent and hard work and for these alluring photos.

@Sajands, Congratulations on the acquisition of an iconic scale model. First time ever an Indian carrier has reached 1000 purchases.
