LBM, this is the English thread. People here will not know Steg. We will be lucky if they know what an amp is.

I don't agree; it still sounds a bit off to me. Of course, if enough people follow a non-standard usage, it would eventually cease to be considered an error. But I'm not sure if "comprises of" has attained critical mass, so to speak. This forum seems to think it hasn't.

Used passively, it does sound more acceptable. Even so, there are those who disagree.

According to this site, the Random House Unabridged Dictionary (2006) says these later uses are often criticized, but occur with increasing frequency even in formal speech and writing. The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language (2006) adds that "in the 1960s, 53 percent of the Usage Panel found this usage [comprises of] unacceptable; in 1996, only 35 percent objected."

Being old-school, I think I'll avoid "comprises of" until the number of objectors falls further!

I think I'll agree with you there and rephrase my sentence to:
The Alphabet is comprised of 26 letters. It does sound more acceptable to me that way too.

You guys should be saying amplifier. This forum doesn't tolerate short-forms and SMS language.

Amp? short for ampoule, isn't it?

Should we allow the ICE guys in here? Thy may start asking if a 500-watt word is better than a 100-watt word, or start asking whether their sub woofers should have commas before the input or after the output.

Oh... I was forgetting...

Sam is the Ultimate ICE guy!
