Re: Your list of buy-it-for-life long lasting products

Wow, what a thread.

To begin, I have been handed down a rosewood 3+1+1 sofa set from my grandparents, that is as old as I am - turning 40 years. Fond memories of sleeping in it as a kid and now my kids prefer this over their beds. So, a lovely memory there.

My Dad's Reader's Digest collection I remember since my childhood.

Collection of old and rare notes/coins handed down from my grandfather.

Few items that I have purchased that I think have or will last lifelong:

1. 11 year old TVS Wego, which just needs regular TLC and has served well.
2. Gifted a FastTrack watch to my wife 10 years back, just needed 1 battery change and goes on
3. My Macbook Air

2 wish list items I want to: Find and buyback my father's first 1999 Maruti 800 and purchase a Mahindra Thar to be passed on to my son.

Quality writing instruments (from a personal experience, Sheaffer, Waterman)

My FIL has a penchant for such and I have seen these beautifully crafted instruments' longevity. The cherry on the cake is the 'spares' support and availability for many of the timeless models - much like a classic Porsche!

Re: Your list of buy-it-for-life long lasting products

There are so many old stuff in my house.
1. My Voltas refrigerator is 26 years old, running.
2. Tape recorder/radio by National is over 45 years old and still working.
3. Iron by Philips 45 years was in use till last week. Not working for a week. Need to take it to repair shop.
4. My Yoyo nearly 35 years old.
5. Hero bicycle over 25 years old.
6. Few of my toys and stationaries like clipboard, punching machine that my 7 year old is using.
7. Threw away 30 plus years old Onida TV last year.
8. Still have 1988 made Yashica Camera.

And many more. We tend to keep the stuff for a long time until it's broken down.

No wonder why this is Honda's bread and butter model. Simple yet durable, functional engineering.
Hi,
Your running is 3500 kms per year or 300 kms per month. No wonder you have seen hassle free ownership for 12 years. Most of the people using activate cover 3500 kms in a couple of months. The ownership costs and experience would be completely different in such cases.

2005 Alto Type II, It has run around 1.6 Lakh Kms till date and has given no major hiccups.

Service cost, even in today's date is a meagre 3.6k/year

Well it has to be the Ganesha idol which is passing on from my first car to my current car (17 years and going strong). Don’t think I will change that ever.

Re: Your list of buy-it-for-life long lasting products

Buy it for life?

Definitely my Tintin collection -

Your list of buy-it-for-life long lasting products-592071971d925474d0d95ceecdf4957d.jpg

Me and my brother built out this collection, when we were kids - and lived in a tiny town in a remote part of India.

Tintin books were not easy to find then. It took us over 3 years to build the collection - we would scamper every railway station bookstore and large bookstores in larger cities whenever we would visit them. We got hold of the elusive last Tintin book of our collection at a very small railway station.

With Amazon, these collections are easy to find. But then again, based on the reviews, most of these are Chinese printed - smaller in size, and owing to poor ink not as colourful.

So yes, waiting for my retirement to reopen the Tintin collection and read them back-to-back just like the older (younger?) days.

Can you lend it to me for reading and return.

I will pick it up from Hyderabad (assuming it is there) and courier back to you. That is a solemn promise.

Think about it.

Kind regards

Smaller prints was my reason for not buying it online too.

Picked up an Egmont box set in-store. Chinese printed, but full-size and high-quality prints.

Re: Your list of buy-it-for-life long lasting products

While we have a lot of antique items in the house, the first thing that comes to my mind is my son's elephant shaped pillow. He got it when he was born, and he is 5 years old now. He carries it everywhere. We even sent it along, when he went in for a surgery, and he came out hanging on to that elephant. Nothing can seperate him from that pillow and I cant find another one to replace it. It has been restitched, re-stuffed multiple times. I cant wrap my head around how one can be so attached to a pillow. But then we have given up trying to part him with his most prized possesion. I think it is going to stay with him for a long long time.

Re: Your list of buy-it-for-life long lasting products

My Adidas backpack. I bought it in 2005, when I moved to senior high school. It’s served me all these years. Lots of fond memories associated with this backpack. Funny enough, it was made in Pakistan, purchased in Kochi and has pretty lived the majority of its life in Kerala, farthest place from Pakistan on mainland India. Peace

For me its my levis and strauss denim shirt which is almost a decade old but looks amazing and luckily still fits me well and apart from this a metal clipper lighter which is 11 years old but looks like its built to last for another 50 atleast.

Re: Your list of buy-it-for-life long lasting products

Our hand me downs and other stuff:
1. An Atlas (or is it Hercules) bicycle from 1970 back in my hometown. This is the rod linkage types (used by dudhwalas types). Robust frame and fit for triple seating. Only needs tires and brake tabs.
2. We had a Favre Leuba wind-up alarm clock from when my parents got married (late 60s). Sadly, it got misplaced during a move some years ago, but was going strong and not losing more than 5 mins a day. Probably needed a servicing at that time.
3.Corelle dining set purchased in 1981 (by my dad in Canada) - we are still using it. Timeless design and indestructible

Going OT here! Our family may have purchased some 15+ pairs of this NH110 Sandals in the last 5 years.

The best part is that Decathlon has been providing us completely free sandals for the last 2 years. I repeat; COMPLETELY FREE WITH ASSOCIATED FREEBIES.

Talk about our years of relationship with decathlon

For having such a healthy relationship, you ought to claim warranties before you hit the 2nd year from the date of purchase. Yes, the QC team at Decathlon themselves ensure that you get free sandals.

Long live decathlon and its warranty policies!

Back to the topic, here goes my list!
  • Ikea Klippan sofa set (elder than me i.e 23+ years)
  • National Rice Cooker (much elder than me)
  • A 2.7L kms run 2010 Toyota Prado (Expecting my dad's grandchildren to drive)
  • A 78k kms run 2013 Hero Maestro (with stock engine and constant 50+ KMPL efficiency)
  • Few rugs and some more kitchen stuff
