Re: Your list of buy-it-for-life long lasting products

Crocs- They genuinely last forever. I've had a pair since 2016 and they haven't started showing any major signs of wear and tear yet. Super easy to wash as well.

Kenwood speakers- My dad has owned this Kenwood 5.1 home theatre system since 2001 if I'm not mistaken, and we use it till this day. It has travelled three countries through ships but is still going super strong.

Seiko watches- My dad has a quartz model from 1995, in mint condition that he wears daily, running flawlessly routine battery maintenance aside. My brother gifted me a 5 sports in 2019, working flawlessly.

Scanpan titanium cookware- Definitely on the pricey side, but not a single scratch on those things since 2008.

Echolac luggage- Constant usage since 1995, through multiple airports, my brother's college and my college, and still as strong as it was when my parents got it.

High Sierra backpacks- They are a little heavy, but I honestly believe they're indestructible.

Re: Your list of buy-it-for-life long lasting products

This thread takes one down memory lane. As a kid growing up in the 80's, I watched my parents squeeze every ounce from everything they owned, stretching their meagre resources.

It's a way of life, I never overcame. My home is filled with stuff now being used by the third or fourth generation (my kids). A few noteworthy items are listed below:

1) National 1 Ton window AC (bought when my daughter was born, 24 years ago) still going strong
2) Movado wristwatch - belonged to my Dad. Almost 70 years old now. After he passed away, I had it restored and wear it only sparingly. Wind it every week and preserve it for my son.
3) Dunhill sunglasses - again belonged to my Dad, he wore them as bifocals. I had the lenses removed and put shaded lenses. They look so very classy.
4) Victorinox Swiss Knife - Used for everything from opening Amazon parcels to DIY jobs. I clean and oil it regularly using sewing machine oil.
5) TAG Heuer wristwatch - I bought this when I was working in the Middle East. Have used it daily for over a decade, now in its 20th year. Recently had it buffed and cleaned. I dont wear it anymore as I have almost stopped wearing watches.

Sadly they dont make stuff like this anymore. Product obsolescence is the order of the day.

Re: Your list of buy-it-for-life long lasting products

1. 2007 Renault Logan Petrol 1.6. Still going strong. Whenever we go out in the car we marvel at the cushy suspension and space inside. So much better than the current crop of cars.

2. Casio G-5600UE. Probably the most reliable watch ever made.

3. My Lego collection. I grew playing with it, now my kids are playing with it.

4. My dad's 1980-1990 Reader's digest collection. What amazing timeless content. Reader's Digest degraded over time. The current Reader's Digest is plain garbage.

Re: Your list of buy-it-for-life long lasting products

Lovely thread! Having spent 23 years building products, creating ones that last a lifetime is a favorite topic of mine. I even wrote a book on this topic, published on Amazon: [Product Mgmt HandBook For Crafting High Quality Products That Last a Life time](https://www.amazon.in/Make-Great-Man...dp/B0CMHYHYST/). So i love this thread.

Here's my contribution to this thread: a Swiss backpack I bought in 2008. It's still in great shape, with all the zips and features working perfectly. Attaching some pics taken just a few days ago. I've traveled to the UK, Japan, Dubai, Israel, Australia, Germany, Poland, Italy, and most U.S. cities multiple times with this backpack. It's incredibly durable, though a bit heavy.

Re: Your list of buy-it-for-life long lasting products

Oh boy. The thread that I've been waiting for. It's my pleasure to share my list of one and done products.

Since this one reply is by me, its gonna be a long one.

1 Swiss army knife. I keep one with me at all times, and I don't leave the house without one. Now one is an understatement since I LOVE collecting these but there are only 3 that I religiously use.
Victorinox Soldier, Huntsman and Classic SD. Can't live without them.

2. Any fullgrain leather product like wallet, jacket, belt, bag and especially Goodyear Welted full grain Boots by Craft and Glory (Indian brand, workshop in Gurugram, Haryana). Good quality full grain leather Boots with Goodyear welting is the only daily outdoors footware that you'll ever need. The advantage is that they're quite water resistant and you can resole them years after they've worn out. Just like anything else, with proper maintenance, full grain leather will never get ruined. Woodland is not even close.

3. Orient Kamasu/any Casio that boasts a 10 year battery life. I have a very old one from when I was I'm 5th grade which is still running on the original cell. Changed strap just once.
My Orient kamasu is not my only automatic but for the money, its way too underpriced. I can't recommend it enough to anyone looking to get into automatics. Mine is 4 years old and still keeps time as good as my casio.

4. Any fine writing instrument. I cycle between Sheaffer and Montblanc. Other than it screaming "hell yeah, I spent THAT much on a pen", it really changes your perspective to what a pen should feel like in your fingers. I keep it with me every time I go out and cycle it with my Sheaffer Icon 9109. My daily note taking/studying pens are 3 Kaco Klips with different colour inks. Refills for all of the mentioned pens are easily available.

5. A Toyota or a Honda. Touchwood, no issues till date. The oldest car that i've seen on the road is the Toyota Qualis and the 1st gen Honda City that I saw multiple in Goa. Can't say for the newer BSVI diesels, but petrol and the D4D ones will get you to the moon and back.

6. Gibson/Fender Guitar. They're the best feeling guitars out there that represent the instrument as a whole. any song you're listening to that has guitar playing in it, 90% chances are it's played on a Gibson or a Fender Or both. Example: Hotel California! It's played on both.

7. Although i don't believe that electronics belong on a buy for life thread, I have to mention the Sony Play station. Endless hours of beautifully made exclusive games that Xbox can't even touch after all these years. These consoles will run as long as you take care of the memory drive, controller and clean the vents of dust every 6 months.

Another Electronic that comes to my mind is my trusty Canon 90D I just need to have it on me if i'm going out for a trip.

8. Ray Ban polarizing sunglasses. You just need to have one on you on a sunny day.

9. A recliner sofa. You deserved a comfortable throne.

10. a good pillow. Your pillow can make or break your sleep and may decide how the next day is gonna go. i use sleepwell.
If anyone knows about an even better one then let me know.

Here's a picture of some of the products i mentioned

Re: Your list of buy-it-for-life long lasting products

This thread also becomes a shopping list, there's something for everyone. Still going through it. I googled for some products too.

I have a Samsung Note 3, working condition, slow now, but only being used as a universal remote in my home. Two Casio watches. The Edifice EQS 1000 tough solar bought some 10 years ago, still works perfectly and looks new. And the DW290 which is a GShock without the GShock - also featured in the first Mission Impossible movie. Waterproof, mud proof, all proof. A Panasonic LCD 42 inch TV still going strong.

Re: Your list of buy-it-for-life long lasting products

This thread evokes a lot of memories..

In frame..
Canon 500D still does great job for photography.. Back then my favorite hobby supplemented by this camera.. Day trips, celebrations, weddings, team outings.. 2 local batteries sourced via ali express in 2019 still have this old workhorse working well..

Casiofx115w solar & cell suported calculator (engineering assignments!!)

Hero pens!! still use it..the pride of school days!! The joy it brings even today..ah ink pens..

Dynex - clock, alarm and radio.. Picked up on a whim during a work trip..4AA Batteries thats it works like a charm even after a decade..

Sonata Ocean fibre series watch - my first digital touch screen watch - the happiness of knowing it was among the few watches in which settings could change by just touch and that it had 100m water resistant as compared to other watches of the day.. neighbors envy owners pride
Dual time, stop watch, blue backlit, day and date..calendar suported till 2039 these impressed me so much that its been
more than a decade since use(with 2 times battery replaced), touch functions still work without a hitch.. Strap replacement pending..

Konika Kroma35 - trusty old camera - last used 6 years back - a hand down from father much before we got newer DSLRs from Nikon (other the canon)..film rolls

Bushnell binoculars (~8years).. Good for day trips.. When the super moon event happened some years back, this binocular drew the awe of friends and neighbours when we used it to watch the spectular moon

Sony NFC remote fancy stuff decade back..still works with 2 AA batteries! used to evoke questions - is that really a remote??

Lastly, my trusty old - Lumagny - magnifier with light received as a gift from a relative who knew I was into philately..still use it at times..

Thank you to OP for this thread!

Re: Your list of buy-it-for-life long lasting products

Certain products that I picked up/was gifted, not putting much thought into it at the time of buying, but proved to be a prudent purchase, lasted over time and proved their utility many times over:

* Set of books (mostly fiction, like "Hotel") inherited from uncle - 1970's
* A Titan watch gifted to me while in school by brother's friend - 1992, 32years & still works!
* My Bajaj Caliber bike - 2000, 24years & if fitness rules allow may last another 24 I feel!
* Various books that I picked up, incl. Sherlock Holmes complete Bantam series, PG Wodehouse complete series etc. - 2001 thereabouts
* Set of 4 Nilkamal chairs + table, not even colour faded - 2002, 22years & going strong
* Atleast 5pairs of formal shirts/pants/tie - 2002, 22years & still good to wear to office
* Nokia XpressMusic feature-phone - 2009, works like a charm to this day
* LG 1.5ton split AC - 2010, 14years & works perfectly
* My Win-10 Acer laptop - 2015, with some RAM upgrade & all, goes fine, serves my purpose to this day, but unfortunately can't upgrade to Win-11 due to non-compatibility
* My Samsung Galaxy Note-9 - 2019, 6+ years & my primary phone; hope it lasts another 2-3years or more, as couldn't find a more perfect match for me!

And regret my juvenile idiocy of trying to reverse-engineer a 1940's Favre-Leuba watch that looked much like a "choona dani" and a 1960's(?) Murphy wooden box radio with some mesh-like antenna & all, gifted to father by grandpa - both of which I successfully destroyed , if not would've been proud owner of these two

Re: Your list of buy-it-for-life long lasting products

Nice thread, took one down the memory lane. Apart from some super senior teak wood furniture over 80 years old and brass utensils similarly aged, here are some things to mention -

1. Usha ceiling fans which are some 1970s vintage and still work. My parents had bought them for their first rented house. Some crompton ceiling fans from 80s were added when they built their house and these also still work. Comparatively, the new age aero-perro design fans i got for a new flat gave trouble within 3 years.

2. I had a crompton table fan from college days since early 90s, gave it away last year in working condition. The one i bought to replace it isn't gonna make it beyond 10 years for sure.

3. Have some watches from early 2000s, still work (battery needed) but i stopped using wrist watches 7-8 years ago.

4. A Voltas window ac which we had for 15 years. Though can't say i like their split units at all. Some panasonic split units have been serving the family for 15 years, no hassle. Daikin i bought in my old flat 8 years ago still working. Great quality and performance.

5. We had a godrej 165 L single door fridge work for 25 years.

6. An LG fridge and microwave i had for 14 years. Both gave major problems just near end of warranty. Duly repaired and worked without issues for 10-12 years. They are still residing in our old house along with the senior ceiling fans, but not much used since we don't live there anymore.

7. We had a lambretta, which was 5 years older than me, and one on which me and my brother learnt to ride. It fell in disuse after being replaced by a Bajaj Priya in 1993. I spent a summer on it in my college years and worked with a mechanic friend to repair it and for the effort, was rewarded it in my final year. It needed a new crankshaft, i recall. i used it for a couple of years and then we gave it away when i moved away. The Priya also served from 1993 to 2018, after which it fell into disuse and we had to scrap it later. The sound of scooters is etched special in my childhood memories. The lambretta heralded my father's return home. The Priya and Chetak, Super, LML had a modern urban city sound to me, and a welcome excitement of going to Nagpur for vacations. They were not just vehicles to me, but carriers of experiences of growing up. The rush of freedom from pedalling and feel of the wind with a twist of of the accelerator is - well i sound like amol palekar movies now haha.

8. Lot of audio junk! Murphy and Sanyo portable tape recorders which recorded many a superb concerts my father attended. I still have some of those cassettes, especially some which have my mother's and grand dad's radio recitals on them. There was an amp built for my dad by his physics lecturer friend, worked for 30 years. Then there's the rich LP collection which I retain. Not used much in the digital era, but never feel like discarding. On the contrary, i bought a record player just to be able to savour these once in a while. In my collection, this little champ of Sony has survived (pic below) since 1999. Tape and CD transports are defunct due to worn belts, but the amp works flawlessly and has outlasted one local and one imported amp, both of these latter going kaput in a power surge.

8. Lastly, my SX4 which is 17 years old, and still working nicely. Clutch plates changed recently at 118000 km, and minor service and repairs regularly. No hassles, only great drives. They just don't come like that anymore, do they?

Re: Your list of buy-it-for-life long lasting products

My list would be:

1. My 2007 RTR 160. Renewed FC in 2022 till 2027, got tyres changed. Service it once a year and it’s still running like a charm. Was my 1st automobile and don’t intend to let go of it ever. I call it ‘Happy’ & it still brings that smile whenever I am riding it

2. The Jazz CVT. Being a Honda it’s been a super smooth companion for 5 years now. Has all features I could think of and hence no plans for changing in foreseeable future.

3. Sony bravia LED TV. 10th year running and plan to use it till it breaks. Added a google chrome to make it smart TV

The one thing, I have been investing, is on books. This is an old photo of my home library. (Since then, I have added another 40-50 books to this library).

For Binoculars, would suggest you to visit a brand store..lot of good options were available few years back. Great brands to chose from would be Celestron/ Nikon/ Bushnell/ Olympus to name a few... It helps to have person at the store explain features of models so that any doubts can be cleared before finalizing on a purchase.. Honestly, i haven't kept myself updated regarding binoculars over last couple of years but I could suggest what to look for regarding first binocular purchase from my personal experience (as I own a bushnell which has been in use for 7+ years now)

When binoculars are mentioned, we are right away curious to know what is the zoom capability available and this becomes USP for stores online.. but that which looks great in an online store would need to checked for multiple aspects before the purchase. Some binoculars are quite heavy (weight) or unwieldy (in terms of grip/ ergonomics) or you may feel need for dioptre adjustment if using spectacles. These details even if mentioned at webpage, feel very different when used in person at the store and you may end up opting for an enitrely different binocular with store person's helpl! Sometimes real world usage may be longer than a minute or two especially when tracking birds/aircraft in flight or at sports event in a stadium.

Try the binoculars with straps that can be worn around the neck especially ones that are available with bigger models and see which one is better for you.
Next would be to check FOV (field of view - how much area can be viewe, zoom capability along with grip and dioptre adjustment. Higher the FOV, cost also goes up accordingly.. Grip is equally important as most of the time, the binocular should be easy to hold considering size and also not should not feel slippery (in case strap option is not available for chosen product).

Low light visibility, anti reflective coating, water proofing are good to have features but some of these may/ may not be available depending on the model chosen / budgeted cost. Check if you get a carry case for selected model; it is really good to have from manufacturer itself as they will make it exactly as per dimensions of the product making it easy to carry during travel.

Basic binoculars should available between 3k to 5k and but feature packed ones as per your requirement should be available between 5-10k. Try checking at Foto circle store who have partnered with Celestron or at Whizz store (Nikon partners) or multibrand stores like GK Vale at your place. Suggest keeping 10-15% price margin over your budget, such that, if you get a better model, go for it as this will be for long term use and value for money.

Lastly, if in case you decide to go with online purchase, suggest checking with official physical store first to confirm if online purchase is eligible for warranty as I have heard that online shops some times sell imported pieces of models for less( from Thailand / Singapore or other such countries) warranty for which, may not be eligible here in India if need arises.

Wish you the best in getting right one.
