Re: Your list of buy-it-for-life long lasting products

Here’s my list :

1) Amazon Kindle : Bought one in 2012, still going strong.

2) Apple Watch : Bought this in 2020, still going very strong with hardly any drop in battery life. Do get the apple Care + though. Super helpful in cases of accidental damage.

3) Apple MacBook Pro : I am using a 2016 MacBook Pro as a personal laptop with out any issues. A Dell would have completely deteriorated.

4) iPhone : my iPhone 13 Pro Max is still going very strong with hardly any drop in quality.

Re: Your list of buy-it-for-life long lasting products

1. Salomon Speedtrail shoes: My last pair lasted 9 years through hikes, a bunch of travel and a bunch of sports (ultimate frisbee, cricket). I’m now on to my second pair and hope they last another 9 years!

2. Maui Jim sunglasses: my daily driver and pretty much the only pair of shades I’ve used over the last 8 years. Still going strong - am very tempted to pick up one more piece of the exact same model as a backup.

3. Watches: Have a Seiko prosper, a Hamilton Jazzmaster cushion and a Casio Gulfmaster. All of them are about 7-8 years old, and I strongly expect them to last atleast another 10-15 years.

4. Not sure if it fits the last, but we still have our 25 year old Ambassador which we’ll in all likelihood hold for another 25 years.

5. Victorinox Chef’s knife: so absolutely worth the investment.

6. Tumi bags: my first Tumi briefcase is now 7 years old, and very minimal wear and tear so far. Have now invested in another Tumi bag this year - a backpack this time.

7. Outlier Dungarees: These pants are super durable, super comfortable and can be worn to work and for travel. Expect these to last 10+ years easily.
Side note: their merino tees are fantastic too, but the last one I got only lasted about 4-5 years.

8. Quicksilver board shorts: Possibly the one piece of clothing that I have worn the most in my life. Used and abused it for 12 years, before it got a tear last month. Planning to get it stitched and continue using it.

9. Miele grinder: This one is really old - possibly 30+ years, and still going strong.

Re: Your list of buy-it-for-life long lasting products

Amazon Kindle Fire (Colour version): Almost a decade and still going good.
Casio Watch: Almost a decade old and have no memory of ever changing the battery even.
O General AC: Bought it at an office auction for 1500/- in 2005, last year gifted it to a friend as it was a window AC and we were moving from city, he claims it still works terrific with no service needed.
VW Polo GT TSi (2020): No complaints and I guess this is a keep, I am not going to sell this ever.
Beer Mugs: A friend gifted me on our marriage, 19 years up I almost use them every alternate Fridays if not more .

Re: Your list of buy-it-for-life long lasting products

I don't think I have anything that qualifies as #BuyItForLife. I am in my mid 30s and so far, there's been two times when I have to move away leaving almost all of my possessions behind. There were times when I had to part with things I didn't want to. When such incidents happen, your perspective gets changed. Now, I don't buy things that would be last me lifetime, I just look for good quality stuff.
Electronics is something that won't last for lifetime. Even flagship phones get outdated.
The best thing I could relate to is my Creative Subwoofer that was purchased in 2009 and I am using daily for 8+ hours.

Re: Your list of buy-it-for-life long lasting products

I last year stumbled upon a Suzuki Max 100 of my FIL. It was bought 3 decades ago and was forgotten and left in garage for more than a decade until I saw it one day and wanted to revive it immediately.

For the service the parts I needed was
1. New battery
2. Air filter
3. Oil change and 2T oil change

After a few test rides spent around 10k to get FC renewed and new insurance.

Also I added new tyres and seat cushion knowing the bike would definitely out last these tyres

Here's a pic when it was just dusted and washed after 10 years of hibernation.

It is in my hometown and I get to ride only when I could visit. My FIL rides it every now and then and he is really happy when he rides it.

Writing this post has made me wanting to ride it now. I'll definitely visit my parents and in-laws this weekend so I could get a ride on the 2 stroke freak.

Maybe it was just me but my experience with the Dyson vacuum cleaner hasn't been great. The battery life has deteriorated quickly (3 years old), some of the plastic pieces on the attachments have broken and the design has room for improvement too.

I'm getting a "normal" vacuum cleaner when it's time to replace this one.

Re: Your list of buy-it-for-life long lasting products

For electronics, I have become a fan of Anker.

Cables, chargers have all been of very high quality. I have been using multiple products of theirs for more than 10 years and they still work very well.

Any trip to US is incomplete without buying some Anker accessories for me.

Re: Your list of buy-it-for-life long lasting products

1. I have a couple of Titan and Timex wristwatches purchased in late 90s. Still going strong with the periodic battery replacement. One of them was misplaced and found after 10+ years with the (long depleted) original battery. Started right back after replacing it and keeping time accurately.
2. I own a BOSE 321 system purchased refurbished in 2004.It's made trips across 110v/220v countries and still had the fantastic sound output BOSE is known for. Sadly, no digital media/bluetooth options but Aux-in or CDs (remember those) work are a joy to hear.

Re: Your list of buy-it-for-life long lasting products

1. Woodland shoes
2. Casio watches
3. Fastrack watches also. They do last long, have been using one since last 10 years.
3. Maruti Car - WagonR 1.1, 18 years and still working like clock work.
4. Hero Honda motorcycle - HH Passion, 15 years on, still running.
5. Honda scooter - Dio 110, 9 years old. It's engine is made of Titanium I think, been incredibly durable so far. Not just the engine, the fibre panels and paint also has aged really well.
6. WildHorn purse - not a fancy brand or anything, but the wallet has lasted 3 years without much aging!
7. Samsung phones - if you are a light user, most Samsung phones easily last for 4-5 years.
8. Van Huesen shirts - the quality is top notch.
9. V Guard water pumpset - more than 10 years on and still working never needed any service.

This is a concept where you research and buy a product in this age that is considered to be well-built and will last a lifetime. In this process, you spend more to buy a quality product. This is much better than buying a cheap, low-quality product and changing it frequently. People who buy for life usually end up saving more with a rewarding quality product.

Example:
3. One Plus flagship phone. It can be subjective, but I run this for at least 5 years before I get bored. I started with One Plus 3 and am now on One Plus 7.

Oneplus is totally useless. Would not put it in such a list. The software updates kill the phone slowly forcing the user to upgrade to a newer model. Very shady and the internet is full of such experiences. How did I know, well I faced it once myself when they killed the camera after upgrading.
