Re: The Career Advice Thread

Dear All,

Have a few queries on a matter which is about our daughter HH being at crossroads with respect to choices to be made, which is likely to affect her future career prospects
She has appeared for XII grade exams- awaiting results (CBSE)

In her own words:

Quote:
Hello,
I am considering doing a BBA in Strategy in Business Analytics from Christ University (Bangalore BG road campus) vs a B Tech in Information Science from Christ University (Kengeri campus).
My end goal is to go into Business Analytics or become a Business Analyst

I will definitely be doing an MBA in Business Analytics (or similar specialisation), regardless of my undergraduate degree.
I would also like to move abroad, in future and I think a technical course has more weightage than BBA.

Which UG course would be better for Business Analytics / Analysis?
I have heard certain companies prefer people with a technical degree.
I have also heard about the IT recession, so I am concerned about getting a job after engineering, but have seen that many people are unemployed after doing BBA too.
I would love some inputs as I am very confused on what I should do.
Thank you in advance!
~HH
Any advise/ inputs would be greatly appreciated

PS: some backstory, could be considered- (may be colored by my perception)
- HH was not good at CS (computer science) subject at school level, for her XI & XII CBSE, she studied PCMB (physics chemistry maths biology), hence her knowledge of programming is zero, she is willing to learn, though, since she wishes to go into IT/ Business analytics etc.
- The perception is that Business Analytics / Analysis would require lesser/ minimum knowledge/ expertise of programming etc
- Christ University BG road campus- where she could (would?) do BBA, is about 10 minute walking distance from where we stay
- Christ University Engineering campus- is about 45min- 1 hour commute by bus

PPS: Dear Mods: If this query is not deemed suitable for this thread, it may be please moved to a more appropriate one

Thanks!
Best,
ysjoy

Will just answer one question directly - in case the plan is to move abroad starting with pursuing a higher degree, then a 4 year course is mandatory over a 3 year course in a lot of universities in the US (which is typically the first preference for Indians). Places like Australia however are fine accepting a 3 year degree program for their post graduate programs.

The one thing I am sure of is that the finality of current end goal ("My end goal is to go into Business Analytics or become a Business Analyst") will not be the end.

For the rest, might be easier to talk directly to you/ your daughter, please DM if you think it might help.

All the best

Re: The Career Advice Thread

Which is the best non-IIT engineering college in India? My nephew has scored an extremely good rank in JEE mains (<400) and will have to take a call on which college to join. As per past years data, he can get admission into any college of his choice. If he clears JEE advanced, then it will be an easy choice but lets assume that is not happening.

Some points:

- Wants to study computer engineering only (most likely AI).
- Has lived & studied in Delhi throughout
- Will not go for a post grad immediately after engineering, so placement is more important than an opportunity for further studies or going into research etc
- Is very competitive and will measure success in the initial few years by monetary success. This is because his family has seen tough times and he is determined to help

So we are not sure which college to choose

- If he chooses to stay in Delhi: DCE or NSIT?
- BITS, Pilani?
- How do the above compare to any NIT (Trichy, Warangal etc) which are very good colleges, but may have a strong regional culture. Tough for a Delhi boy to adapt?

Congratulations to your nephew !!

I suppose he still wants to join IITs if he does well in Advanced.

If he is open to move outside Delhi:
  • BITS Pilani is certainly better that NITs as far as academics and placements are concerned BUT the fees are in the range of 25+ lakhs.
  • IIIT Hyderabad is also a good choice. Heard the academic rigor is hard and focus only on Computer science unlike PCM subjects which are studied in other engineering colleges.
  • Considering only mains score, NIT Trichy may be a good option for Computer Science.

Why focus on AI instead of Computer Science? Specializations like AI and Data Science may restrict the placements.

That is indeed a very good rank. In my opinion, IIIT Hyderabad would be considerably better than any of the options you are considering, both in terms of placement and research opportunities. It is widely considered to be second to only the old IITs in these parameters.

If he can compromise on this point, he can also apply to IISc for the BS (Research) program. Now that KVPY has been scrapped there are high chances that he will get admitted on the basis of his JEE rank.

I don't think that will be a good idea considering his other options, but even if he does choose to stay in Delhi, IIIT Delhi might be better because of the lower batch size (which might help in placements) and better research.

Wishing him the best for JEE advanced!

Re: The Career Advice Thread

I had one question. If someone wants to make a business in the Auto Industry what are their options. Me and my friend who both like cars are finding new opportuinities to start a business. I am from a Computer background and he is from a marketing one. Also we live in a tier 3 city, Nashik.

Re: The Career Advice Thread

Are any full time traders here? I have 4 year experience in the markets and have just started to become profitable now. I have a background in CSE am have goals of doing an MBA in finance. I am not inclined to leave India and settle abroad but am open to pursue MBA in either of the places. What would you suggest?

I am an engineer from one of the colleges you mentioned in the post. Was in a similar conundrum albeit more than a decade back.

Since your nephew has already decided on the stream (CS), I would suggest just blindly go by the best brand his budget can afford. As an example, I opted out of BITS Pilani because the fees was 4 times as compared to my other options. Otherwise that is what I would have selected.

Based on some recent experience with recruitment in my company - IIT Hyderabad and BITS Pilani are far ahead when it comes to brand equity followed by NITs.

Regarding the last question, I would guess that none of these colleges would have a regional culture unless there is a local quota. You will have students from all over the country and its going to be a khichdi.
Some kids find it hard to adjust in such surroundings and some just flourish. You should be able to reasonably guess based on his nature. A kid who is easily able to mingle with new people has higher probability of managing better in such a new setup away from home, atleast for initial few weeks/months.

So we have a (welcome) headache added to this situation. He has scored a merit rank of 820 in JEE Advanced . So the IITs now come into the picture.

Based on the cutoff of last year, these are the courses he can be eligible for:

1- IIT Delhi:
- Electrical Engineering (Power and Automation) - Touch and go acc to last year's cutoff (800)
- Engineering and Computational Mechanics
- Mechanical

2- IIT Bombay
- Mechanical
- Electrical dual degree 5 years

3- IIT Kanpur, Kharagpur & Madras
- Electrical

4- IIT Roorkee & Guwahati
- Data Science and Artificial Intelligence
- Computer Science (touch and go)

We spent the day speaking to students at IIT Delhi and some recent graduates from IITs. The unanimous opinion was to get into one of the older IITs in either Electrical or Mechanical. The students have an option to study courses from Computer Science department based on their interest and can have CS as a minor. Placement wise, apart from 3-4 companies that come specifically for CS every company opens their positions to at least the top branches in IIT.

So he is leaning towards IIT Delhi Electrical (Power & Automation), else Comp. Mechanics. Else Mechanical at IIT Bombay.

Thoughts?

I concur with the opinion provided. Branch wise it does not matter, as long as the kids chose their courses wisely during third year and put in hard work to get better CGPA.

Few queries from my side:

My brother's son has got not so good rank - he has got 4.5k in advanced and is looking forward to get selected in IIT Kanpur/Kharagpur/Roorkee/Guwahati. He is ok to take Aerospace, Chemical or Material science.

1. A question on the choice entry. If for instance, the following options are locked:

College 1 Course 1
College 2 Course 1
College 1 Course 2
College 2 Course 2

and in the first round, choice 4 is allotted.

a. What will happen if the float option is selected? Will college 2 be completely ignored in subsequent rounds?
b. If Slide is selected, will option 3 completely eliminated in subsequent rounds?

2. Is physical verification of documents still done once seat is accepted or only online verification of documents?

3. How are BS Economics or BTech in Engineering Physics as a career choices?
