Thanks for the response. My wife is reluctant to expose our son to too much x-ray. I tried telling her its just once a year. Maybe she will relent tomorrow.

There is very little risk in dental X-rays. Pediatric dentists are especially careful to limit the amount of radiation to which children are exposed. Lead aprons and Digital X-rays are used to ensure safety and minimize the amount of radiation. So don't worry for taking X-ray.

re: Calling doctors/dentists/specialists on Team-BHP to provide free consultations

Hi Guys,

Cross posting my post below from the career advice thread - thought of reaching the relevant audience for my help! Happy to discuss things via PM too.

Link
Hi Guys,

My sister has just completed her 10th board exams and we are currently evaluating all career options. I was looking for some information on pursuing medical studies and was hoping to get that here (as I do not have many friends/relatives in this profession) – consulting a counselor is also there but I also wanted to do some research on my own. I am liusting below what all I know till now – so please correct me wherever you feel I am wrong.

So the usual deal is to study Physics, Chemistry and Biology for 2 years post 10th in a college and appear for undergraduate exam (with M.B.B.S being the most popular undergraduate course). Your performance in the entrance exam (i.e. your rank/percentile) will determine which college you get into i.e. if you want a popular college you need to do well. Now the M.B.B.S is a 5.5 years course with compulsory 1 year of internship. As far as I have heard, just doing M.B.B.S is not sufficient for career growth and a specialization is a must. Now, for post graduate studies (M.D etc), this is a further 3 year course which is again dependent on an exam. If you plan to pursue further studies (super specialization) then you need to add another 2-3 years. All in all, you are looking at a minimum of 9-10 years.

Now my questions are:

-Which are the most sought after colleges in India for medical studies? (For ex: For engineering, IIT’s are considered to be the best, so for medical which are the best colleges?)

-What are the exams which need to be given for entering the best colleges above? It seems that there are national and state level exams so need a clearer picture as to which exams to give.

-What exams does one need to give for pursuing post graduation?

It would be great if someone could help me with these queries and further more questions. I have gathered that Medical in fact required lots of patience and hard work. I need sufficient information to educate my sister regarding what all she should expect in this field if she decides to pursue this. Advice, suggestions, criticism welcome!

For UG, AIIMS is the most valued institute and then there are others like JIPMER, CMC, AFMC at national level, where as Grant, Topiwala and some other Govt. institutes are notable at state level for MH.

What are the exams which need to be given for entering the best colleges above?

For central institutes like AIIMS there's a separate entrance test conducted by each institute. There is an All India entrance for UG through which 50% seats from Govt. colleges all over India are filled (except for AP and J&K) and Maharashtra state entrance for filling the remaining 50% seats from Govt. colleges across the state.

What exams does one need to give for pursuing post graduation?

This is the most difficult part one has to face during their medical education. Currently there is disproportionately low number of PG seats in our country and the current pattern of exams just adds to the fuss.
The admission process will be similar to UG (Tight competition due to very few seats though) but there are some prestigious institutes offering only PG courses such as PGI Chandigarh which conducts it's own entrance like AIIMS and Jipmer. But these days with the mysterious NBE conducting All India PG entrance, it has become highly unpredictable no matter how hard you study for it.

My two cents about pursuing Medical education:
  • Take it only if you are really into it because once decided there is no turning back in this stream.
  • None can deny the fact that one has to face lots of stress at times during the course. Don't worry though, strong minds can cope up.
  • Patience, perseverance and hard work are must-have qualities for this stream.
  • Financial back-up may be required at unfavourable situations. (PM me if you couldn't get me on this point)

P.S: All the best to your sister

I have seen both the x rays there is growth of upper teeth but very slow. Now two things come into action lets assume

1) there is a delayed growth which is very ok these days
So if the kid is not having any problem every thing will fall into place with tiime.
2) the growth is being slow because of many habbits as a baby for example thumb sucking. Then the situation changes completely.
This all will be cleared once seeing the kid clinically. Since that will be a difficult task. My suggestion will be
If first option then if the upper teeth are not mobile get a pulpotmy done and leave them to fall on there own.
If second option then along with pulpotmy you need to concider talking to an orthodontics.

Thanks for your response! Indeed the scarcity of seats has made this field very competitive. Will surely keep in mind your 2 cents.

The above statement is very very important to keep in mind.

This profession has long years of education (9-10 usually till super speciality). And then another 4-5 years minimum for settlement in career (unless one has a family run hospital to manage etc.). Not that this applies to everyone but in general I have seen so many individuals within my relatives who are at about 30 but nowhere close to be called settled in their respective medical careers. And they are good bright students.

I am not trying to discourage, it's a very good profession. Just be prepared for a longer than normal time before you can call it a stable career.

BTW - good news if your sister loves to study, even after job or private practice starts, most good doctors study for 1-2 hours daily to keep them updated. My SIL is an oncology surgeon and she says they have to!

Thank you very much for the response. He never had thumb sucking habit. His upper front teeth got eroded at a very early age, one possible reason being we never rinsed his mouth after breast feeding (at that time). So right now there is very little front upper teeth visible outside the gum. I can send you a photo if required. It is this eroded state which is worrying me. My own layman thought is that due to this abnormal status of his teeth, it may not fall off naturally.

Pulpotomy seems like s strenuous surgical procedure. Can a kid endure it?

So do you advise that we should wait and watch?

Thanks once again for sharing and sparing your professional expertise.

What i did: I have started taking B-complex tablets, for that darned hair loss.

What i know:B-complex is water soluble, so that which the body doesn't consume, gets removed through the kidneys.

What i don't know:
Is there any problems to the kidneys(and/or any other organs) in the long term?

A photograph will be a great help it will clear lot of things.
if you can see there is some treatment done in one of the upper front teeth which shows white color filling, that is pulpectomy: you can google both the terms you will understand the difference.

send a photo with upper teeth and palate

regards

If i remember correctly, this child was seen by my wife who is a pediatric dentist and There is much more to this case than can be analysed with x-rays alone. This pulpectomy was done by her and some more treatment was suggested but somehow the parents didn't follow up.

We have to do for the other three teeths soon and I am giving my kid some time to get rid of the fear/trauma.
