SINNERS
Rating: 10/10
Rarely do you see a movie that is a film, an exploration of culture and of time and place. 'Sinners' stands tall as one of the great films we've seen. My wife and I are both fans of horror and while the film is dressed as a 'horror' film, it's really also a really good movie.
I am not a fan of the Black Panther movies Ryan Coogler's made - even the first I thought was pretty mid. But I liked Creed more. And also don't forget he is the man who made the scorching 'Fruitvale Station' as his first. So I did approach 'Sinners' with a bit of fear and hoping against hope it lives up to the hype because I have been burnt before ('Talk to me' didn't talk to me at all!).
And man, does it. It's those very few movies that we want to watch again and praying it is brought back in IMAX format in theatres once the latest Marvel one is out.
It has a POV, it says things, it shows things - the reason why we make movies. And oh, the music and the context of it all! Miles Caton is worth the price of the ticket - the voice on that boy is unbelievable!
You want bubblegum stuff, there is enough to go around. But if you are in the mood to see something truly well-made, something remarkable, make a beeline for the theatre. It will be criminal to watch it at home. For context, here's the director showing you why the film was made to be watched in theatres:
As someone who is in the business it is even more heartening to see something like this made, something with soul, a movie where the 'villain' is probably just as justified as the 'heroes'. But make no mistake, this is a movie about the black experience, about black culture in the Mississippi in the 1920s Jim Crow era, so walk in expecting that. But trust me, you'll have a lot of fun.
UNTIL DAWN
Rating: 7/10
It's been a good month for horror fans!
While 'Until Dawn' is nowhere near 'Sinners' it's a perfectly serviceable and enjoyable horror movie in its own right. I'm a big fan of the director David F Sandberg and his wife and producing partner Lotta Losten. They made the viral YouTube 'Lights Out' short which Hollywood picked up and called them from Sweden and they made it into a full feature 'Lights Out' which is one of my top ten horror films of all time. David also made the astoundingly creepy 'Annabelle Creation' from the Conjuring universe. So I knew we were in good hands.
Based on the famous PS game, the movie follows pretty much the same beats and gives you a lot of jump scares and (if you're into it) a lot of gory kills. It's an ideal 'date movie' so to speak and my wife and I enjoyed it a lot. A bunch of college kids lost in the woods find a creepy house and then a masked killer is killing them. Perfect popcorn fare if you're into horror. It's light and easy and gets the job done.
DROP
Rating: 7/10
A compact, sharp little thriller, this one has just dropped on VOD. Simple story - a widowed woman with a 5 year old goes on her first date in years - and someone keeps 'dropping' sinister messages on her phone while they are in the restaurant. Leave - your kid dies. End the date - your kid dies. Do as we say, or .. your kid dies.
A movie like this expects you to suspend your disbelief and also take a few leaps. And once you do that, it's a good fun watch. A simple 'parlour mystery' type setting - a single restaurant and a series of weird messages that go from strange to sinister. It is almost like a comfort watch - if you've watched a lot of these like we have, you know which directions it can go in but it's still satisfying and good fun when they execute it well, which they do.
HELL OF A SUMMER
Rating: 5/10
Marketed as a slasher for Gen.Z, made by Gen Z (it's co-written and co-directed by Finn Wolfhard from Stranger Things - the kid who falls in love with Eleven) it has some really fun moments. The characters are really Gen Z tropes but are funny and sharply etched, the kills are OK and the plot twists, though expected are somewhat clever. The issue is with the setting and the way it is shot. It's so done to death (pardon the pun) it's not as fun.
HEART EYES
Rating: 9/10
It's not just a slasher - it uses tropes of a rom-com to set up a slasher! It's gory, grisly, also very funny and a really good fun watch! Won't say anything more or spoil the fun but it's one of the few original slashers to come out in a long long time.
