Working Man

Streaming: Amazon Prime

This is probably the only Jason Statham movie which I switched off half way. The kind of actions scenes expected from a Jasan Statham movie was totally missing. The story is nothing different from his other movies. Can be skipped.

The Assessment , 2024

The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)-img_5786.jpeg

A sci-fi dystopian thriller, set in the near future where right to parenthood is controlled by the state and based on a seven day assessment of the potential candidates. The movie raises questions of societal pressures, the complexities of parenthood and class divide using the above premise.

Anchored by a delightfully whimsical oddball performance by Alicia Vikander, a subdued turn from Elizabeth Olsen and some stunning cinematography, this is an interesting, thought provoking watch.

Streaming on Prime.

Mission Impossible: Final Reckoning

Went with very low expectations, because I found the previous installment boring. And surely enough, the first quarter of the movie seemed to be following suit with long context setting/narration and flashbacks. But it picked up after that and all-in-all finally left the theater feeling good about having seen it. Seemed a good film to wrap up the series.

IMHO the first MI is still the standout, good acting and great plot. MI 4 (Ghost Protocol) was also great. But after that, in the quest to present bigger threats (what do you do after exhausting the nuclear option?!), I thought the plots and dialog suffered.

But all in all, while not exceptional, this was a movie worth the watch. And the action sequences inside the wrecked submarine (not giving away a plot device, that angle was established in the previous movie) do keep you gripped. Had some good tributes to previous MI movies (especially the first one), that were well-integrated into the plot as well.

I fell asleep - too much swirling in the water and ice in the 1st half. Also I forgot about what happened in the previous episode. Overall, the movie was okay but the franchise is getting as withered as Cruises face.

Re: The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)

MI- Final Reckoning.

Just came back from the show. I had high expectations considering this is the final movie and didn't even saw the trailers to keep everything fresh.

Disappointed. For me this is probably the worst of the lot. The action, twist and turns, the BGM, the back and forth between the team is the highlight of Mission impossible previous movies. This was all over the place. Ethan has always been meticulous in his planning and seldom leaves anything to chance. Here from start to end everything was based on chance. Can't go more in detail without spoilers so let it be. Even the plane scene in the end was underwhelming as the Fallout helicopter chase was far superior and thrilling in comparison.

Worst thing is I dragged my wife with me to watch this one and she slept in between cos the movie became too much nostalgia factor rather than fun. And they didn't even end Ethans story properly.

The first MI and Fallout remains my favorite. Also Ghost protocol was a lot of fun.

Rating - 2.5/5

The story premise is similar to one of our all time favorite movies- SPEED but, this time it's a train and no less than the Shinkansen (Bullet train).
It is nowhere near the SPEED movie. Actually it is worse than Bollywood movie. At least in our Bollywood movies, there will be some logic to the cause of the terrorist.

I thought Japanese movies would be like the Ring, Grudge etc. This one gets 0.5/5

This can't be true. A Hollywood movie is releasing first in Asia and then in USA.

Probably because here not many people go to theaters as the ticket prices are ridiculously expensive ($20 bucks).

It's releasing in the US on May 23rd and irrespective how the movie is this will be seen in IMAX (even more expensive at $25/P.P).

Well, I'm not sure if you have seen all previous 5-installments. I have seen them and there is a Final Destination fan-base or there isn't. There is no way you can be in-between.

Final Destination
In-Movie Theatre
4/5

We saw this movie last weekend in XHD format in theatre here in Seattle. We normally go to the movies once or twice in a month and most of the movies, the theatre is empty and I take a nap and come back as most newish Hollywood movies are crap.

However, this was different and theatre was full and mostly Indians.

This final installment was as good as the previous 5-installments, there was a nice back-story, slick production values, fantastic action (the same chronological or sequential way things happen before someone is killed) and this franchise is known to kill people in the most unique fashion, this installment did not disappoint in that department at all.

Another reason to like was this entire movie was shot in PNW (Vancouver, British Columbia) so the landscape was familiar and pretty like hell.

They also created a Seattle's "Space Needle" look-alike and the action scenes shot in this tower was phenomenal.

This was indeed the last installment and FD fans will be sad to see this franchise go-away.

For all other folks, who don't like "Gory Scenes". Pls stay away !!

Speed was the first foreign or non Hindi movie that I watched on our VCP in 1995 or 96. It was a Rs. 10 rented video cassette.
Unknown to me then, it was Keanu Reaves and Sandra Bullock who introduced me to the world of Hollywood. I was in 3rd or 4th std. Still has an impression on my child part of the brain, although never had a chance to watch it again ever.

Final Destination: Bloodlines Really liked the movie, the movie is less than 2 hours long and doesn't waste any time. The starting sequence of the movie is awesome and I got to give it to the writers who keep on coming up with innovative ways regarding how a person can meet their end. 9/10

I didnt dislike it. But it looked very predictable. I dont hate gory scenes But I like some suspense that leads to it.

Wouldn't say it was waste of time. But nothing lingers after the movie.

Final Destination was never about suspense. Theme has been established after the first installment that folks will die. How they die and the uniqueness of how they meet their end is the actual suspense.

Compared to the inane Hollywood movies, this movie kept us engrossed till the end.

I disliked the movie only because it didn't let me take a nap in the theatre after gorging on a fabulous home-made biryani.

Speed was the first English movie that I watched in a theater with my friends. It was the first movie released in Kerala in a Dolby theater (Ernakulam Sridhar). Went to watch to see what the hype was about this thing called "Dolby"

Life (1999, Netflix)

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0123964/

"In 1932, two strangers are wrongfully convicted and develop a strong friendship in prison that lasts them through the 20th century."

Starring Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence along with a lot of other familiar faces, this was a really good movie to watch.

Electric Dreams (1984)

Rating: 3/5

A potentially futuristic idea, marred by an overall average watch, but yet saved by some really good timeless music.
The theme is not something you'd expect in 1984.
Miles starts to love a girl next door, Madeline. The former is an architect, dreaming to save the world with his puzzle piece brick which won't fall apart in an earthquake, while the latter is a musician who keeps her cello as her beloved pet.
A computer purchased by Miles after being spilled with champagne starts to talk and have feelings. Yes, AI of a kind..
So, Miles thinks it's a great idea to let the computer make some music, and Miles claiming it as his own. Unfortunately for Miles, the computer who names itself Edgar, also starts to love the same girl. Plus, a guy at Madeline's workplace, Bill also starts to show interest for Madeline. Will our innocent guy Miles make it?
Edgar starts using his AI power to ruin Miles' life, to create situations that are surely imaginable for the future, if AI is given a free hand.

No more story leak is needed, you'll see it if you want to.

The soundtrack is fantastic, from the electric age and no doubt Giorgio Moroder is back with his electromagic. Some noteable songs with their orig. album numbers are:
2. Video, a mashup created by Edgar's AI.
3. The Dream, a fictional dream sequence of a good-intentioned architect trying to save the world with his magic brick.
4. The Duel, is a competition between Madeline and Edgar's music proficiency, as they take turns in playing a classic masterpiece,
5. Now you're mine, a love song sung in a spanish/mexican accent,
6. Love is Love, a slow love song.
8. Let it Run, an electro heavy song which spared no rock instrument, by Jeff Lynne
10. Together in Electric Dreams, in my humble opinion, the No. 1 electro song ever made, a youthful, 3:54 long jingle that deserves to be heard only in lossless format. This was also featured in a game, GTA Vice City Stories' radio channel. Hear it once and let me know if you disagree.
