Brush your teeth and splash some water.
Go and run.

I follow this approach. But I generally get up around 4:00-4:30 am, answer the nature's call and go back to sleep. Thats why I find it impossible to wake up after 1 more hour of sleep.

I guess I should take 450 ml of water instead of 500 ml. :D

On a serious note, thats a good suggestion. I have tried this earlier and has worked for me. I will ask a friend to give me a ring in the morning. He wakes up at 5.

It is such a great feeling to know you are not alone. like many others i too went from fat to fit and now fat again. Three years back my weight peaked out at 107 kgs and i knew it was about time to put a stop to this unhealthy way of eating. So started my journey of weight reduction and with 1.3 year of continous work outs and diet i reached 84 which is where i was very content. I felt really healthy and was able to fit in a 34" jeans easily. then too much work untimely workouts marriage everything happened and am back to 100. Feels so bad that i just let it go and took my weight for granted. Now have decided to get back to the gym and burn all those extra calories, the aim always will be getting fit, getting slim will follow all by itself. the thread was a great motivation thanks all.

I have a slightly different take on this.

My theory is that Rohan doesn't manage to get out of bed on time simply because the payoff of a warm bed seems much higher than that of going out into the cold morning and ending up sweaty and tired.

The trick is to find something that works for you: time your exercise in the evenings, for example, when you don't have the excuse of losing sleep. Or find something exciting that makes you wake up before your alarm even rings!

A hep gym normally has enough factors to make the prospect of going to gym look exciting :D if you know what i mean.

^^ LMAO! I totally get the swing!

On a serious note, one can try sleeping early, a little earlier than usual. The human body can take only a specified amount of sleep. If one can identify this, in number of hours, he can clock his body to wake up at a specific time. Works for me, at least..

Day 2 of swimming. 25M pool, max depth 8ft, well maintained. Plonking into the pool after a little warm-up and doing 8 laps (200m). Loving it!

You got that right. I find it very difficult to get out of the warm and cosy bed, especially in the winter or rainy season. I keep telling myself - let me enjoy the sleep today, I will start the jogging from tomorrow. And tomorrow never comes. I don't hate getting sweaty after a workout. In fact, I love the exhausted feeling you get after a workout. Its just that I find it difficult to get out of the bed in the mornings. :D

I used to exercise in the evenings and it really worked for me. But after getting married, I spend the evening with my wife. We just get 3 hours of together time (6-9pm) on weekdays. It would be very selfish of me to take 1 hour out of that together time and use it for my exercise, while my wife prepares dinner for both of us. Also, I don't feel like jogging outside in the evening because of the traffic and pollution.

I have purchased a stationary bike, which I use in the evening. This way I can be at home with my wife and also have a workout.

But I find that cycling doesn't give the kind of intense workout as compared to jogging. So the only option is to get up early in the morning and go for a jog. I would ask a friend to give me a ring in the morning. Once I start waking early for 3-4 days, my body clock would get set and I would be able to get up early on my own. :)

Why is it so easy to gain weight, but hard as a nut to lose some :Frustrati

Everyday I wake-up or am forced to get up (parents) at around 5-5:30 am to go for walks, but after a leak, go to a slumber again.

Hi Guys,
Good that I bumped into this thread while I was browsing team-bhp non-auto threads. I myself am trying to lose some weight (about 7-8 Kgs). I am about 6'1, 35 years and weigh 91Kgs. I have always weighed around 83-84 kgs but due to work and family responsibilities I have gained a bit of fat. But now I have made up my mind to get back to my original weight.
I have a fair bit of equipment in my house..., dumbells, flat bench, treadmill, manual elliptical etc. What I have observed is that after sometime we get bored of working out on these machines. No matter what, I just cannot drag myself to workout everyday (or for that matter 3-4 times a week). My advise to anyone who wants to lose weight is to pick up a sport (basketball, tennis are great for losing weight) and try to play with your friends. That way you will longer consider it as "workout". Its about having fun. Start gradually and pick up pace. I am speaking from experience. I myself am a basketball player having represented Karnataka State and University. When I play ball I dont consider it as workout, its just fun I am having with friends. Also, playing a sport doesnt let your body get "used" to the exercise as the movements vary every sec, min and day, unlike running on a treadmill where the body gets used to it and you hit a plateau. So my advise to you guys is to do something you like/love and I am sure you will get to where you want. I am starting on my weight loss plan from tomorrow. Also, try to stay away from fried and sweet stuff (I know its tough). Exercise with diet is the only way to lose weight, along with some will power.
Hope this will help some of you guys.

Sigh!! I re-started my workout regime on 7th November 2011 after a gap of 3 years. My best weight was 65 kgs at the college days. By the time I reached 33 years I was weighing 72 kgs and there is no stopping it. I attempted to reduce it couple of times (1st time I gymmed for 1 year and the 2nd time for about 9 months) but the nearest that I could achieve was 75 kgs.

This time, I was a regular at gym till 18th Nov (except 2 Sundays). I endured unbearable body pain hoping it will subside over the period of time. But, on 18th of Nov I woke up with a severe headache out of body pain and since then I am afraid to resume my workout. The headache is still there and some times I get dizzy as well.

I am doing 2 hours workout. (20 mins treadmill, 20 mins cross trainer, 20 mins cycling and remaining 1 hour for stretch and specific muscle workouts). Do you think this is too much for me?? How do I re-start my workout?

I am 39 years old, 5'4" tall and weigh 78 kgs! I want to get down to 68 kgs atleast. I have severe pain in my joints (knees, elbows, lower back). I am finding it very difficult to use stairs. The trainers seem to be less knowledgeable and I am seeking expert advice from fellow t-bhpians.

Yeah mate, 2 hours is too much. And if you were doing this every day except Sunday, then you were not giving enough time to your body to recover and hence it fought back.

I guess at the age of 39, you are not trying to bulk up but lose weight or at most get rid of fat. I'd suggest a one hour workout that has stretches, cardio for 15 to 20 minutes and light weights for rest of the hour to start with. Slowly, as your bosy gets used to this workout, you can start increasing the intensity.

WS, nice to see that you are still enthusiastic about excercising and looking forward to reducing weight. I've been hitting the gym for more than 10years now and would like to suggest you the following from my experience.

1. Take the help of trainers to learn the basics, once you get hold of the workout regime, start observing how your body reacts to each workout. Each body is unique and reacts positively/ negatively to each workout. The greatest Tutor in gym is yourself, of course you can take references, but only by your learning you will know how your body is reacting to what you have been suggested. Mix out workouts, that will keep the enthusiasm going. Don't check your weight regularly, but be sincere. By doing the former you might lose confidence some times, but by doing the latter you know you are on the right track and that will keep you motivated to move on.

2. Be patient, really patient. Build the intensity slowly. Never start off intense workouts immediately after long breaks.

3. Unless you are into body building, a good 45min workout with a 15min warmup is ideal for both weight gain and loss. By working out 2 hours daily, you are only hurting your body.

4. Make going to gym a habit, try visiting the gym at least 4 times a week. Since you want to reduce your weight by more than 10kgs, I would suggest hitting gym at least 5 days a week.

5. Make jogging(in tread mill if not possible in open air) a part of your workout regime. It will condition your body to a great extent.

6. Keep pushing yourself step by step. eg. If you are Jogging 2KMs daily for a week at SpeedX, Jog for 2.25KM on the next week.

7. Keep a check on your diet. Break up your meals into smaller meals and have them at fixed intervals, avoid eating one big meal. Include a lot of fruits and vegetables in your diet. All this doesn't meant that you have to be in strict diet all through out, you can still indulge once in 2 weeks. Remember, if your diet is not proper, the workout you do in gym will have no meaning.

8. Last, a healthy body will help keeping your mind healthy. Remember, Health is Wealth. So no matter what never let the motivation to hit the gym go down.

Had you been in Chennai, I would have personally guided you, because it's easy to train people who have the will to see a change.

P.S: Take it easy on yourself for the next couple of days, since you have developed head ache now

WS, it doesn't matter. I started off when I was 17 years old. I was weighing 63Kg and stood at 6'3" then, now I weigh 89Kg, which is ideal for my height.

I never had a proper tutor, I just learnt workouts by seeing what others did. I already mentioned in my earlier post how I went about in all these years. I would suggest you to do the same as well. Because, every trainer I've seen, has only a lot of preconceived notions, and each human body being so unique, their notions don't go well with the trainees most times.

I, instead of following the trainer, tried to become a trainer to myself, and I succeeded in doing that. Stop looking for a good trainer, you 'll most probably never find one, become a trainer yourself.

Today's Bangalore Times of Times Of India had couple of pages on health and some articles on losing weight. All these articles were about the new techniques available to lose weight and not a single mention of exercise! Laser therapy, cold treatment and what not. :Frustrati

I was told by a dietitian, to have 1Ltr of warm water in the morning after u brush and before going to sleep. then in between every 15 mins you need to have water to a small quantity. I was 126 last year, Now i am 110. But you cant expect immediate results. This took me a year to reduce. And ofcourse i tried avoiding junk food.
