re: Newer Rotting Cars

Cielos were one of the best cars of its times. I'm planning to adopt the one lying unused with my uncle. Its a white color 1996 GLE variant. This motor hasn't been started for the past 1 year+. I had a talk with our mechanic and he guarantees me that he will do the work.

The problem will be the spares. Earlier when I was restoring my blue Cielo I used to get genuine spares from a stockist in Trivandrum. He had his shop near Thampanoor. I lost his contact number too. If he can source me the required spares, I will definitely go forward with the restoration (even if it sparks off WWIII at home).

Zen seems to be in running condition considering you an see the new road surface under the car. I should say its owner has real nerve to drive it around in its current state.

Driving around in a Zen with "EXCUSE ME " and "LOVELY" stickered on it.. the last place I would ever want to be.

I think the post qualifies for "Weird and whacky stickers on cars" too.

This thread has been created with an intent. It is to depict the lower life span of the newer generation cars, that get stalled for whatever reason and then ultimately land in scrapyards.
The usual problem encountered by owners is that the engine needs overhauling or that the car needs general repairs, valued at much more than its resale value.Spare availability problems are also cited for cars like the Daewoo Cielo and Matiz.
This means the end of the road for the car.
So things are not the same in the present day situation, contrary to the fact that we had cars running for two, three or four or more decades earlier.

This Gen1 Maruti 800 is like this for many days. Spotted in our colony. I hope it gets rescued/someone is using it.

God! I feel pity in the same way one feels after seeing some orphans. A weirdo I am!
I wish I could buy a few beauties and restore them to their full glory!

re: Newer Rotting Cars

Sighted at Jaipur a few days ago- This Mahindra product did not enjoy a long model life. it was already outdated and boxy with angularities, when introduced for manufacture. The only good part was that it was powered by the older bolero's XD3P Peugeot engine.

re: Newer Rotting Cars

I don't understand this issue with the zen. It's a fine machine with genuine spare parts available, why would anyone let it to rot. Am driving one, it's 14.5 years old, carburettor model, and it is doing just fine. I tried a few times to exchange it with a new car, but the exchange value often quoted is so less, that now i have decided to keep it for life.

re: Newer Rotting Cars

Scrap heaps (only upto two tier now) developing in India too ! Such situations rarely arose earlier, as cars would run for 30 to 40 years earlier.

Today, spares are not available for older discontinued models. Also sometimes the cost of repair is prohibitive vis a vis the resale value of the car. Hence many prefer to sell them to scrap dealers and go for a new one.

In future, like in the West, we may have more than two tier scrap yards.

There is a Fiat 1100 superselect in the first picture on the left hand side, should someone want to resurrect it, that car is priceless and needs to find a new life (it looks pretty recoverable)
