I had my brush with Bangy auto guys last week when returning from mysore to delhi.

I got off at Bangalore central RS and was going towards the pre-paid auto booth. A auto guy approached me just 20mtrs from the booth and asked me where i wanted to go. I told him airport and he asked for 150 bucks. Since i am from delhi i know how delhi auto guys rip off people so i told him no. then he said 120. i again said no. He continued to reduce the price and finally said 75. I then went to pre-paid booth to find out price is 99 rs from station to airport.

That made me wonder as to how he would have taken me in 75 bucks from RS to airport when fare is 100 bucks? if i had agreed, he would have ripped me off later using the tactics you guys have mentioned in your posts.

Not always, once in a while they do act in a right way.

I dont know about the Banglore police, i had an experience with a hyderabadi traffic policeman, We bought a PC monitor in what is known as the PC market place in hyderabad(CTC). As we just came out of the market, an autowalah stoped near us and asked he would come itf we gave him 50/- (it was 9pm) while normally would have been under 25/-. At the same time a traffic SI, came that way and enquired what happedned and when got to know about it. he simply took out the callan book handed him a challan of 50/-. The policeman collected the challan. Deciding not to take any chance we took another auto and came home.

PS: also had some stupid experiences with traffic policemen on other cases, but I just wanted to share this one here.

Well after having traveled by autos in mumbai i really kick myself to even travel in a rick in bangalore. Outright corruption in the name of earning money and the way they try to fleece you is too much to even take.
Have seen auto guys in commercial start charging 1.5 for a trip to ramaiah. When asked why he says he will come back empty. I never take the autos in a stand as they are least bothered about honesty but more interested in making all the guys in the line agree for a predetermined rate.

This incident goes back a few years. My mom was basically from TN but my grandparents had settled in Trivandrum when she was around a year old. So she is really flunt in both malayalam and tamil. Once my relatives from TN came visiting and we went to the trivandrum zoo(its just 1km away and u have to pay just the minimum charge). We were returning by auto and my mom was conversing with my relatives in tamil. The auto guy thought we were from TN and demanded an exorbiant charge when we reached our home. My gave him such a tounge lashing in pure malayalam that he was so horrified andpractically fled from the place

I have seen auto drivers hand over 10Rs to cops and literally yell at the cop with foul language. That cop just took money and left. Zero self respect ...

The incident mentioned in the first post of this thread is the very reason I am going to buy a car.

Hi,

Why can't you react, if you know the kannada, learn the local language, when you stay in any place for few years..........especialy in Bengalooru.

From the figures you guys are quoting, Bangalore auto fares are really exorbitant! And I have come across some honest auto wallahs too.

I just raised my voice and shouted at him as to whether he was running a bus service or what to drop us at the bus stand !! My wife also joined in for good measure. Asked him never ever to join the prepaid auto queue again as he obviously doesnt understand the concept of prepaid very well. Need less to say, after that, he dropped us off at the destination without a murmer.

My wife also have this sort of issue with the auto walas. she daily fight with them to come from mg road to airport road. if she leaves office a lil bit late ie after 6.30 pm its 120-140 rs for a 8 km ride. guess what they claim they will not get a return trip if they come interior for .5 km to drop her near our house. feels like commuters must get there house on main road only

Reading this, auto ricks in mumbai seem much better.

Only exception would be if you are catching Auto/Taxi from Airport or Kurla/Dadar railway station where they are waiting to rip people coming from outside.

Y'day, I wanted to go to KR Market to catch a bus from my home. It was already 9.15 p.m. As usual, the auto gusys started asking for extra money. I tried around 4 autos few wanted extra money and few of them refused. But luck struck me and an auto guy (aged around 25 yrs) agreed to come to KR market w/o any extra fare. As usual, I kept on staring at the meter for any case of tampering had been done. To my surprise, the meter was OK (Ift was a digital meter). I reached my destination and his meter reading showed just that should have been shown if calculated manually. I paid him the fare and some extra money for his fairness and he thanked me for that.

Moral of this is not all the auto drivers are same as explained here. There are also some clean ones. But we need to really search these guys and if at all you travel in these guys autos, you will be very happy that these guys are atleast honest.

I meant, I did not react to some specify words they used. If I had given it back, the situation would have changed from bad to worse and the rage would have rosen to a different level. But as you said knowing Kannada would really put you in a better position in such situations.
