Have done a Bandra-Thane solo long drive (or should I call it short drive ) via. Ghodbunder (approx 70 kms). Ghodbunder rd., is fun to drive.

Looking forward to Mumbai-Lavasa solo drive during monsoons. Have done this route earlier though, but with friends.

My longest solo driving is between Mumbai and Madurai in my car --- Premier padmini. Mostly I start early morning at Madurai and reach Hubli by night where I stay for the night and start next morning.

While starting from Mumbai was able to drive till Chitradurga and halted for the night there. Done this solo driving back and forth twice in the same car.

The GQ was in a bad shape then (read under construction) and due to limitation of the car did not try more than that.

Not even a single breakdown anywhere on all the trips either solo or with family. Done it in Hyundai i10 also and had wife for company. But all trips solo driving. I almost take charge of the wheel in all four wheelers.

2450 Km. South Carolina to Miami Beach, FL and back. I do not recall the time it took me as when I got into Miami, I did go in circles for a bit until I finally found my hotel

Another: 1900 Km. South Carolina to Pittsburgh, PA and back to watch a Steelers game. Each way took me 9 hours

I do solo driving quite often(Bangalore-Kottayam, Bangalore-Wyand). The higway drives seems very entertaining after the mad traffic of the city. It gives you the liberty to enjoy your vehicle's abilities. And I prefer driving alone(No conversation, better concentration)!

On the other hand, before each such journey, I feel a bit scarred too(thinking about the accidents that could happen and the poor road manners of the truck/buses and especially the tractors). I have seen lot of accidents and when they happen on the highways, it would be quite fatal as well. Maybe this little worry in the back of my mind plays its role in keeping me alert all the time.

On the positive side, this business of driving on the highways has made me very pious person!

Every once in a year I do since I have started living in Mumbai:

Mumbai-Delhi two and fro, total distance each way is 1550kms:
-2005- Hyundai Santro- 26 hours
-2006- Mahindra Scorpio- 22 hours
-2007-08-09- Honda Civic- best time is 17 hours last year.

I just love this sector and always prefer night driving due to no traffic, ,tractors, bicycles, people, dogs etc. 90% divider/toll road.

I am doing it again in 1st week of August, whoever wants to join is most welcome but in their own ride

The longest solo trips;

In North America,

Winnipeg, Canada to Chicago, IL and back - 1400 KM oneway - left at 5.00 am reached at 8.00 pm, same day. Temperature outside, -20 C and below throughout. Did this quite a few times, actually.

In India,

1989 - Visiting home. Landed at Bombay, went to my friends place and picked up his car. Drove from
Bombay - Bangalore. Don't know the distance. Left at 5.00 PM from Bombay - at Bangalore, 1.00 PM next day. Breaks only for gas. Then, Bangalore - Kottayam, Kerala after couple of days.

Typically when I am driving out of town, I always have someone with me in the car. I think I have done only 2 solo out of town car journeys. Both happened on my Baleno within a few months of each other in 2009. Besides these 2 trips, I have been the only driver on a lot of trips out of town, but then being the only driver does not really make it a solo trip.

First one was around 1000km from Bangalore to Koparkhairane in New Bombay. This was done in the first week of July 2009. Took me around 12 hours. I left Bangalore around 7am. I stopped at ranibennur to pick up cash from an ATM. I took two or three pee stops on the way. At one of those pee stops, I noticed that the crosswinds were so strong that i was peeing in a horizontal stream .

I carried some snacks with me for breakfast and stopped at the mc donalds in kohlapur for a 30 min lunch break. Dinner was at my cousin's place in new bombay.

There was quite a lot of cross winds between Tumkur and Hubli, which made driving the baleno at even 140km/h a challenge. sometime between haveri and hubli, it started rain. Rain was on and off till around 20-30kms before kohlapur. I also hit rain on the Mumbai-Pune expressway which further slowed me down. In bangalore, I started out of JP nagar 9th phase. I took the kanakpura road till the NICE road, then NH4 all the way. This trip was done to shift out of Bangalore.

Overall this bangalore -> bombay trip was pretty uneventful. I had music on. I took audio notes on my phone and today after almost a year, those notes still sit on my phone. I also had this trip tracked on my gps, unfortunately the gps unit got stolen before I could transfer the same from my computer.

My other trip was a delhi-chandigarh-delhi, which was sometime in the begining of august, 2009. This was roughly 550km.

I would be interested in tips on safety and other aspects from those who frequently do long solo trips. Any scary incidents to share?
