2024 Annual Report Card - Superbikes & Imported Motorcycles Sales Analysis

The low volume market for Superbikes and Imports in the country doesn’t allow for a meaningful monthly analysis of their sales data. However, the same over a longer period of a full year makes for a healthy discussion - and with that goal in mind, below is the 2024 Annual report and analysis of the premium two-wheeler market in India.

4697 premium motorcycles were dispatched in the year 2024 with the market seeing a 41.9% increase in dispatches compared to 2023.

2024 Annual Report Card - Superbikes & Imported Motorcycles Sales Analysis

India's favourite premium bikes by sales volume

2024 Annual Report Card - Superbikes & Imported Motorcycles Sales Analysis-gridart_20250207_000246721.jpg
  • Sportsbikes and sports nakeds rule the list in 2024! A sole Triumph breaks the Japanese monopoly in the Top-5 once again!
  • Kawasaki Z900 is (yet again!) India's highest selling premium motorcycle with 1035 units dispatched in 2024 - Undeniably India's favourite big bike, that too with an upcoming major facelift to be launched soon.
  • Surprisingly, in a world where 600cc supersports seemed to be struggling for existence - the re-introduced and facelifted Kawasaki ZX-6R has become a true market favourite, coming in 2nd with 465 dispatches.
  • Suzuki's all-time favourite hyperbike - the 3rd generation Hayabusa retains 3rd place - dispatching 419 units.
  • Triumph's versatile sports naked - the Street Triple 765 (and the RS), comes in 4th with 376 dispatches.
  • The mighty litre class supersport - the ZX10R comes in 5th at 288 units.

Manufacturer Market Share and Trends

2024 Annual Report Card - Superbikes & Imported Motorcycles Sales Analysis-trend.png

2024 Annual Report Card - Superbikes & Imported Motorcycles Sales Analysis-marketshare.png
  • Kawasaki had their best-ever year in 2024 - while retaining their marketshare above 50%.
  • Triumph grew overall with the 400s this year though they still retain second place for only the premium bikes with 25% marketshare.
  • Suzuki can do no wrong with the Hayabusa, and the VStrom 800 seems to be picking up slowly.
  • Harley Davidson continues to struggle on - hope the tax cuts on the imports might be able to revive some sales for the American brand.
  • Honda had only one primary bike on sale through the entire year and it managed to sell reasonably well - bringing up 6% marketshare.
  • Who Yamaha? Although Piaggio seems to have started reporting small dispatches, even if insignificant in terms of marketshare at the moment.

Kawasaki

2024 Annual Report Card - Superbikes & Imported Motorcycles Sales Analysis-cq5dam.web.1280.1280-3.png
  • Kawasaki retained 50%+ marketshare in 2024, all thanks to the Z900! Remains the undisputed market leader with a market share of 52% in 2024.
  • The value-priced Z900 brings home the maximum numbers for Kawasaki yet again - with 1035 units. This is quite the achievement, considering the facelift was long overdue and introduced recently in the international markets.
  • Two supersports climb into the top-5, the ZX-6R with 465 units and the liter class superbike with 288 units. Even the mini supersport has become a success, the ZX-4R doing better numbers than the likes of the Ninja 650.
  • Versys 650 brought in decent numbers yet again with 183 units
  • Ninja 1000 had always seen good numbers for Kawasaki - so it remains to be seen how the recently launched 1100SX stacks up next year.

Triumph

2024 Annual Report Card - Superbikes & Imported Motorcycles Sales Analysis-triumph.png

2024 Annual Report Card - Superbikes & Imported Motorcycles Sales Analysis-triumph_my23_street_triple_rs_action_024.jpg
  • Triumph had a good run in 2024 with the highest numbers - but still lost out in marketshare from 29% to 25%.
  • Street Triple brought in the maximum numbers once again for Triumph at 376 units!
  • Tiger 900 did well with 276 units dispatched, the most popular adventure bike for 2024.
  • The recently launched Daytona 660 is off to a good start with 133 units,
whereas the 660 platform has otherwise lost steam with the Tiger Sport 660 doing 75 units and the Trident 660 doing just 29 units
  • Speed Twin 900 continues to remain a favourite with 91 units dispatched, whereas the brute force of the Rocket III makes it sell well for the price point - with 70 units.

Suzuki

2024 Annual Report Card - Superbikes & Imported Motorcycles Sales Analysis-suzuki.png

2024 Annual Report Card - Superbikes & Imported Motorcycles Sales Analysis-hayabusa_action06.jpg
  • Thanks to the evergreen performance of the Hayabusa, Suzuki comes in third with 11% marketshare.
  • Hayabusa brings in the big numbers for Suzuki - with 419 units dispatched. The Busa proves once again that it can do no wrong!
  • But Suzuki can! The GSX-8R seems to have been received with lukewarm enthusiam
  • Thankfully the VStrom 800 has a much better performance - though clearly no match to the main rival - the Honda Transalp 750.

Honda

2024 Annual Report Card - Superbikes & Imported Motorcycles Sales Analysis-gallery8_dev1.jpg
  • Honda showed disinterest in the Indian big bike market in 2024 as well - but the Transalp did sell enough to get them a 6% marketshare, much better than 2023.
  • Glad to see the 650 twins back for 2025 - hope that builds some momentum for Honda in the market once again.

  • Fatbob and Fatboy continues to bring in good numbers, along with the Sportster S from the entry range.

Nice report. Thanks for compiling Crazy_Driver.
There was always an adventure bike since last 3 years(Versys mostly) in top 5. Not this time

Interestingly - 6th,7th,8th positions are taken by all adv's. Tiger 900 lost to the mighty ZX10r by a small margin.

Re: 2024 Annual Report Card - Superbikes & Imported Motorcycles Sales Analysis

Do you all think the recent budget tax cuts on big imported bikes will have any noticeable effect on sales numbers, if the benefits are passed on to buyers? Also when do you think the new prices will be rolled out?

A drop in price definitely won’t hurt sales. I’m also wondering the same thing as you. Are manufacturers actually going to pass on the savings to customers, and if they do how long will it take to reflect.

I hope they do, and think it’s a strong possibility! Indians are definitely moving upwards in terms of spending appetite. So sweetening the deal would definitely entice those who are on the fence.

My best guesstimate would be that the prices tac changes probably will only apply to units imported after the new financial year. So at least a few months before official price drops. Possibly some discounts to move old stock that has already attracted the duty.

Is it possible to get some data on BMW and Ducati as well?

Should be interesting to see how well the premium brands in the premium segment are performing.

Why not consider RE 650 Bikes here , they make a large dent to other SB numbers . How much RE gain of market share is loss to others . It punches above its weight. For whole of the year their numbers will be even more than these exotics.

Re: 2024 Annual Report Card - Superbikes & Imported Motorcycles Sales Analysis

Surprised to see such low number for the Ninja 1000SX considering the all round performance, friendly riding posture and desire of a faired bike. Also will the Versys 1000 return to India?

I wouldn't be surprised to see good numbers from BMW, I feel they'll fit between Triumph and Suzuki in terms of market share.
- GS850 Family - Great Value for middle weight adventure tourers. Guestimate - 150+ units
- S1000s - Seeing alot of them on road and social media. Guestimate : 120+ Units
- GS1250/1300 Family - Segments kings - Guesstimate - 80+ Bikes
