Hey Leadfoot!

zeropointeight was missed by me for these last 13 years, didn't realize it was missed by others too!

I am so kicked to have it almost back, I am based in Bangalore and only managed to go to Pune recently to do a day of test drives post it's resurgence, which left a lot to be desired, can't wait to get back to dailying it!!

Since I last saw it, I've scored some Daewoo Matiz 13" Steelies, and got them straightened, sandblasted, and powder-coated black, ditching the League Alloys from 2003!! Also got the Fuel tank insides chemically coated and outside powder-coated!!

This is how infectious my SS80 love has been just in my close friend group!!

And zeropointeight' BLR Kei Jidosha stablemates!

Rest assured, that once 0.8 is in BLR this thread will have a major bump!

This could very well be among the longest-running threads on the forum.
I have been following your build since over a decade. So glad to see the Blue one back on its feet. Can't wait to see it in person soon.

Super stuff Edumnd !!

Thanks for sticking around @BeemerBug_06, TeamBHP was just simply the perfect platform to do something like this, crowdsourcing information, inspiration, and sharing the process! We almost knew everyone on the forum by name back then, it's so impressive to see how much the forum has grown too, as have we, with it!!

And over the almost 21 years since I came to this obsession with simple functional, frugal automotive design that is so evident on the SS80, and gone on to own some pretty amazing cars, one that has been a constant and that is the SS80 in my garage!

Wanted to know if the shade of blue that it wore before was OEM, cause the Baby Blue one that I bought last year is not the same, and I've seen more of the Baby Blue ones on the road!

And since I'm moving to 13" Steelies this time around, these early 2000's 13" 5.5J League Alloys are up for sale, DM me if interested! Right now they just have a fresh coat of paint, but I am going to powder coat them black before the sale, unless the buyer would like a different color done!

Ss80 Diy

As with most classic/vintage cars, as the years roll on, parts get hard to find, especially plastic parts and one of the most difficult ones on the SS80 is the wing mirror, there's practically price wars when someone posts an original Kioto!!

Since the wing mirror is a crucial part of the SS80 aesthetic, and every off-the-shelf option from another vehicle looks ugly or mids-proportioned, I decided to take the plunge and recreate the OEM part from scratch.

My preservation class Red SS80 has its original mirror still intact, which served as the base for the reverse engineering project, measurements, and scans were taken and I used my professional skillset to 3D model the part and took the opportunity to add subtle improvements to it.

Here's the raw 3D printed part, the prototype is an FDM print in PLA for functional testing and evaluation, after which I will look at small batch injection molding run with soft-tooling.

Edmund : My car's Rebuild Maruti 800-pxl_20221206_124610947.portrait.jpg

The Mirror base in comparison to the cast aluminum OEM part, the main difference is the swivel interface, which I have changed from a ball-socket type to single-axis, keeping in consideration the horizontal plane of rotation, as the door section that the base screws to is slightly off 90°, so that the mirror body rotates parallel to ground. The adjustment to the mirror that the ball-socket joint offered has been accounted for by a friction ball joint that the mirror glass will be mounted to, allowing me to swing the mirror out and then adjust the visible area by moving the mirror glass independently to where needed. This was mainly done as the ball-socket swivel mechanism exists to accommodate that final visual adjustment as the mirror glass is solid mounted to the mirror shroud and also is the first to fail leading to the droopy-ear syndrome, that you see on so many SS80's with their 40 year old factory mirrors hanging on for life!!

The snap-on frame will act as a finisher to make it appear as close to the OEM part as possible. Some R&D work remains on the mirror glass ball joint, to find a suitable OTS (off-the-shelf) part.

Here's where this project stands currently, a few hours of sanding and filing the part before painting and assembly. Another of the small improvements is the mirror stalk is slightly longer, I did this to avoid having a little of the door to be reflected and for the mirror to be in a slightly more optimal reflective space!

I will be refining the CAD data based on my evaluation after installation and will then machine 1 unit out of aluminum specifically for 0.8, cause it's a resto-mod, but am currently looking for an injection molding partner for a small run!

Any industry leads/TeamBHP-owned business with production capability will be appreciated!

Costs so far, minus my time spent are a whopping INR 900 for the 3D printing!! Far less than the 6K I've spent to acquire one and 14K I was quoted for another!!!

SS80 Droopy-Ear Syndrome!

In other developments, 0.8 was translated into raw aluminum by hand by my friend while in design school 16 years ago, and the car wore it proudly on the rear while it ran and sat all these years, I pulled it off before the car was stripped and I now have it with me in Bangalore. Coincidentally that friend, who now lives in Tokyo, visited me recently, so I reconnected him with his handiwork, it was a great nostalgic moment, as we reminisced how chuffed we were when we stuck it on the car, happy to proclaim the massive 800cc powerplant!!

It has aged well and needs a little spit-n-polish, which I will get to before it goes on the car!
