I have never ever topped up water.

I thought most modern Car batteries are sealed maintenance free batteries where you don't need to & can't do this. In those batteries where you are supposed to do this, there are caps where you can open & top up water. But I don't think there is any in my car battery.

I think the maintenance free batteries use gel instead of water to make them maintenance free.

Although the water loss is minimal in these batteries, you do need to add water sometimes. I just add RO water to all the batteries. Never had any issues.

Re: Which is the Best Car Battery Brand?

Car: 4th Gen City Petrol MT.

Dilemma over the top variant batteries of Exide and Amaron.

Looking to change SF Sonic OEM battery as 2 years have elapsed and running is mainly in weekends. Don’t want an unpleasant surprise in the coming year and hence thought of proactive replacement.

No major issues with OEM SF Sonic battery as of now, except for the fact that cabin lamps turning on seems a bit delayed when door is unlocked.

No problem in cranking though and hence have enough time to get suggestions from BHP’ians.

Does Exide make better sense considering cost and warranty?

Exide Epiq

42 months replacement warranty
35 months pro rata warranty
77 months in total

MRP Rs 5124 as per their website

Amaron Pro

36 months replacement warranty
30 months pro rata warranty
66 months in total

MRP Rs 5677 as per their website

I don't know the ambiente temperatures at your location, but 2 years is too less for proactive replacement. In the cold, batteries perform slower than what the same battery would have done in the summer. If the present battery claims 36 months, try to replace around that time. If it is lesser, go for Exide, as it is having longer warranty and lower price in your case.

Current battery is OEM SF Sonic(Warranty for OEM battery is 1 year from date of purchase of vehicle as per dealer) . Reason for considering proactive replacement is that vehicle usage is a bit low.

Sometimes only once in 2 weeks. As I will be travelling a bit, don’t have the option to crank it every week

Ambient temperature is not an issue, as vehicle is used mostly in southern TN and Kerala

I too thought of Exide for the longer warranty , but TBhp Jury is overwhelmingly in favour of Amaron hence the dilemma

Exides have improved a lot. I was also in favor of Amaron in the past.
When you have more warranty, you may go for it without a thought.

Knowing you from the last two posts, you will anyway go for proactive replacement once it nears the end of warranty, which is a good thing to do.

Re: Which is the Best Car Battery Brand?

More on Exide Epiq Vs Amaron Pro

Exide Epiq

CCA IEC 270, CCA SAE 332
C20 Capacity: 35Ah

Amaron Pro

Ref Amp Hour: 40
CCA: 380

The higher price of Amaron seems to be due to the higher CCA and higher Amp hour

Re: Which is the Best Car Battery Brand?

My Zen's battery conked off suddenly some 3-4 days back. Recharged it with help of my Bosch C3 charger- the charge window showed green but the charging never got completed as per the charger. When I checked through voltmeter, it showed just 10.XX volts. I knew one cell has gone bad. It was Exide Mileage battery and just completed 3 years. By the way, this is the shortest life I got from any battery after our Fiat days back in 2002.

This battery was eligible for pro-rata Exide's replacement warranty but I decided to get Amaron, albeit that would mean spending a little more. The dealer didn't have an Amaron model ready so I will be getting it today. Hoping that it will deliver much better performance in terms of longevity.

I too replaced the OEM Exide on my Swift 2017 Diesel with the Powerzone (which I believe is same as Amaron). I got about 6 years from the OEM Exide and that's amazing life but that could be due to low mileage as the car only did about 47k kms in the 6 years. Exide I believe is more expensive that Powerzone. I am not sure if Powerzone is a parallel brand of Amaron but the manufacturer is the same - Amara Raja Batteries.

Re: Which is the Best Car Battery Brand?

I have been using Amaron as a replacement of Exide in all my vehicles and they have been proving it much better than Exide since more than 10years.

Also, SF Sonic batteries are good, but service is the only question mark.

Re: Which is the Best Car Battery Brand?

Cross-posting from the Honda CR-V Official Review thread, looking for more alternatives to Amaron 55B24LS (45 Ah, CCA 440 Amps).

I am looking for suggestions for a replacement battery from Exide/Motorcraft/Others that will last more than the 3y 8m that the OEM battery has lasted.

The vehicle is stock, with no aftermarket accessories. Priority for the battery being performance and hassle-free ownership.

So the presumably top Exide is falling below the Amaron Go.
Amaron does not seem to publish the IEC Rating.
I went down a (short) rabbit hole to understand IEC vs SAE, so including it here for reference

Cold Cranking Performance (Amps)

The Cold Cranking Performance (CCA) measures the starting performance of the battery. In simple terms, the higher the CCA, the easier it will be to start the vehicle.
SAE (J537 Jun 1994 American Standard)

This is the starting test according to the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers). The test specifies that the battery at a temperature of –18°C will deliver a current equal to the Cold Cranking Amps for 30 seconds with the voltage staying above 7.2 volts (3.6 volts for a 6 volt battery).
Although subject to battery design, an approximation of SAE to DIN CCA relationship is:- SAE = (DIN x 1.5) + 40.
Battery performance drops off quickly with temperature, so this test is a good check of a battery’s starting ability. With a 10 second voltage of EN rating and its need to support 30 seconds to 7.2V, the SAE test gives a good view of high rate capacity capability of the battery.

IEC (International Electro Technical Commission) (IEC 60095-1 Nov 2006)

Again, the IEC test is performed at -18°C . After a rest period of up to 24 hours after preparation (according to 6.2 of standard), the battery is placed in a cooling chamber with air circulation at a temperature of -18°C +/- 1°C until the temperature of the middle cell has reached -18°C +/- 1°C. The battery is then discharged according to the standard and is required to meet a voltage of 7.5V after 10 seconds and 7.2V after 30 seconds. the battery is then rested for 20+/-1 seconds after which the battery is discharged at 60% of the original current and is required to meet a voltage of 6V after 40 seconds, in accordance with table 7 of the standard.

My 4th gen Honda City’s OEM SF Sonic went kaput suddenly in middle of September, giving a life of roughly 2 years, 6 months. The scary thing was that it just went dead without any warning. The SA told that there was some sort of liquid discharge in the battery tray and that is a sign of a weakening battery.

Got it replaced by Amaron FLO (the max spec variant with 72 months warranty available at that time as per Amaron website) AAM-FL-00042B20L. Purchase was through dealer itself

Surprisingly it went kaput in the 1st week of November. The vehicle was last used just 3 days ago. It was replaced under warranty. Got dealership team to check the vehicle for any leakage, and they replied in the negative after the car was left at the garage for a few days

Initially, I thought cabin lamp left on by mistake might have caused the SF Sonics sudden demise, but the time from last usage of car was less than 24 hours

I was more careful after installation of the new battery. Moreover car is always parked in such a way that when we lock the before bedtime, any light inside cabin would be visible. After changing the battery under warranty, also checked if boot light was on despite the car being locked by placing a mobile phone with video mode on in the boot , and locking the car. There was no problem with the boot light.

Will update in ownership thread after a month or so to see if the issue was with the battery or car. SA claimed that this particular series/ model of Amaron batteries had similar complaints elsewhere.

I use a dash cam connected to the USB port of the car (ie it records only when vehicle is in Accesory mode or engine is kept running) but the port always gets switched off after car is turned off. Still I am taking the extra precaution of removing the USB Wire whenever I park vehicle.

In the meantime, I found an seemingly unrelated coincidence. The trip before discovery of the batteries went kaput was to a nearby mall approx 17 kms from my residence, to catch a movie late night show (typically having start time between 9 and 10pm and ending between 1 and 2 AM). In both cases vehicle was parked in the basement parking lot of the mall.

In the meantime, reserving opinion of Amaron FLO till some more time lapses

Re: Which is the Best Car Battery Brand?

Can anybody explain what is the difference between these two batteries ?

Their technical specifications seems exactly the same & one is shorter in breadth by 2mm only.

https://www.amaron.in/product/amaron...0b20l/267/view

https://www.amaron.in/product/amaron...42b20l/98/view

My Alto & Honda City takes 42B20L battery but my battery dealer is insisting that both of these batteries are same & 40B20L can be used instead of 42B20L in these cars.
