My suggestion for all those who have fogging (early morning)- I recollect a post some-where, AC cooling without switching on, screeching sound like belt noise when engine is cold is to make beeline for TASS. TASS cannot change, even if under warranty, without a joint report with Subros person. So be ready for some delays.

The 1st lot of Safaris would be completing their 2 Year Warranty period and the compressor is a very expensive part.

EX and above can also check by switching on their roof A/c with the front A/ switch in OFF position. If you hear a hissing noise from it, (gas energizing in the coil),followed by cold air,you have the same situation.

Its not under the seats, its more under the hood, below the engine.

I have the same problem. It does not happens always though. Sometimes when I change gear or even in nuetral when I depress the clutch thak noise happens. I was told by the TASS guy that this is common in all 4x4 and that it is normal. Something about having dual gear etc etc. Is yours a 4x4?

I also sometimes hear this thak on clutch press. I was told its normal.
However any noise I hear the guy tells me "its normal in 4x4".
I ask him, can I test this in another 4x4 to which he says "Sir no 4x4 ever comes to this workshop"

I hear this "thak" sometimes while releasing the pedal hurriedly. It is not loud but audible enough even with glasses rolled up. Occurs when engine has warmed up a bit. Can also be heard in neutral, car stationary- press and release the pedal quickly. I too was told this is normal.

Good lines that TSK, most luxurious truck! - seems mostly exclusive in a 4wd, none felt in a 2wd of mine.

As for me, will update soon on taking care and being careful of the front wheel bearings - just not to run up some 1k maintenance bill if you drive fast and roughly.

So long as you are ready to dis-regard the minor niggles, there is no vehicle like a Safari. The silver lining is that this vehicle, the present model, has come a loooong way (and I say it from the positive angle) since the their 1st version, the TCIC, especially as regards the problems - minor or major.

This Thak or kling (or however we need to call it) sound is there in my vehicle also. Got to notice it well when the SA was negotiating the vehicle into the service bay.

So the "all Safari's have this" or "this is normal, sir" excuse is not an excuse.

But then, the sound has not been too loud for me to notice before that.

Guys, dont waste your time over this sound ...Its normal for a heavy duty clutch release bearing to make that sound.. Release the clutch slowly it wont be heard. Even my 3.0 ltr had this so does alto

After a trip to Velankanni (mostly on cratered lunar road), my truck has started making rattling sound on the driver door. Driving a Safari is really a pleasure - but one has to become a little deaf.

Remember Tata is a truck maker, and you drive their most luxurious trucks, so as long as she moves its fine, thak, clang, whoosh, whistle, screem, whine... All are okay. As long as she moves ...

One more thing about the turbo lag (I hope thats what it is called), when I push the accelerator, you feel the push on the seats after like 1 sec, is it normal?

I just checked the mileage on my vehicle and this the second time I have checked after the retro, its giving me a 'PERFECT 10'

Before the retro it used to give 12kmpl under the same driving conditions i.e city driving and I used to shift gears at around 2200-2500 rpm, now I do it at 2000 rpm.

Other 2.2 owners who have got the retro done please share your woes/experience.

Haven't checked the average in city driving conditions, as i hardly drive it in city of late, hehe. And have noticed a drop in fuel consumption on highway drives, after the retrofits, and the ECU reflashing in particular. What used to be 14.x kmpl, is now 13.x kmpl. Not concerned greatly by this drop, as it's returning the same figure unfailingly. But the thrust in the 3rd gear seems to be lost, ie. the vehicle would lug along effortlessly on 3rd gear in the ghats, but now, it drops power instantly and have to downshift to 2nd. Again, the engine feels more sedate now. Hence, have got over the second inkling as well, hehe.

PS: jaysmokesleaves, i haven't yet mastered the gear shifting skill that doesn't cut off the AC while driving over ghats. This is my only gripe.
