Won't this void the warranty? My XUV 700 also had an engine oil change at 10k with Maximile Ultra. Not happy with the performance.Wanted to switch to Castrol but am sceptical about the warranty policy of the company regarding the same.

Any bs4 car is likely out of warranty by now. If it’s in warranty make sure that you use the dealer specified oil (cross check that the right oil is filled) and at manufacturer specified intervals. Out of warranty cars - feel free to use other oils / fluids / filters

Re: All about diesel engine oils

I was playing around and reading up on stuff and decided to gather the HTHS value for some diesel engine oils. Here is the list that I was able to find.

Engine Oil HTHS Value (cP)
IndianOil SERVO PRIDE XL 15W-40 3.7
Castrol MAGNATEC STOP-START 5W-30 2.9
GULF ULTRASYNTH X SAE 5W-30 3.0
HP NEOSYNTH 5W30 FULLY SYNTHETIC ENGINE OIL 3.1
Motul 4100 Power SAE 5W30 API SM/CF Semi Synthetic Engine Oil 3.2
Shell Helix HX8 Synthetic 5W-30 3.5

Re: All about diesel engine oils

3.5+ is excellent as far as hths goes for high torque diesels. That servo is a hidden gem. Shell hx8 is almost phased out and older stocks are available but is fantastic. Much the same hths for their 0w30 ultra ect right?

HTHS above 3.5 more or less becomes a w40 grade.

3.5 being the sweet spot which can be found on both w30 and w40 grade.

Yes. Their 0w30 ultra ect c2/c3 is also at 3.7. Thank you hserus sir to your contribution to this thread, your guidance on oil related matters has been very helpful.

I am adding this page i found for others who can also glean from this.

More to the point this higher hths is the difference between acea a5b5 (and c2) versus a3b4 (and c3)

Yes, indeed. But the motive of my post was that if w40 grade is also allowed in a car, try to get a compatible w40 grade instead of buying a w30 grade with very high HTHS.

For example, Shell Pride XL 15w40 with HTHS of 3.7 mPas is '3 times' cheaper than Ultra Ect 5w30 with HTHS of 3.7 mPas.

Ultra Ect is the thickest of all the 5w30 grade oils tested in this article and will have no substantial FE benefit when compared to other w30s.

Yellow bars denote Ultra ECT.

The only thing to keep in mind for your analysis is ultra ect is for bs6 but can be used in bs4. That shell pride is only for bs4 cars.

Yes, all other specifications should be compliant to the manufacturer listed spec. and w40 oils should also be allowed as per manufacturer, otherwise, it is better to stick to w30 or lower.

Attaching another plot for HTHS vs Kinematic viscosity.

Most cars that specify 5w30 do so for fuel economy. Else a standard NA or turbo small petrol or diesel engine won't come to any harm from 5w40 A3B4 or for BS6 5w40 C3, regardless of if 5w30 and A5B5 or C2 has been specified.

Slightly larger (2 litre and up) turbo diesels will benefit from 15w40 CK4 regardless of the 5w30 specified for cars like Fortuner / Endeavour.

Going down the internet rabbit hole on oils, I stumpled upon an excellent youtube channel - Lubrication Explained

One of the videos that I liked.

Re: All about diesel engine oils

We have a service coming up for our Renault Scala Diesel. Was using Shell Helix HX8 5W 40. However now it has been driven around 7k and sometimes feels like engine note is different.

Would it be better to go for Mobil Delvac, if available or would Castrol edge or maybe something different world be better. Would not like to go for a complete mineral oil.

Re: All about diesel engine oils

HX8 is a synthetic oil and should last you 12k easily on that engine. Just take it out onto the highway instead of too many short trips.

Thanks for your reply!

However the service is due. So anyways we have to get the oil changed. Would it be better to replace it with Castrol edge or Delvac 1?

Shell HX 8 4 litres is for 2.1k and Castrol edge for 4k.

Is it worth the extra cost for a 1.5 L turbo charged diesel with an annual running within 10k Kms?
