The manufacturer recommendation is based on a wide variety of parameters rather than just fuel economy. Use a better oil in the same grade but change grades around only if you think you know more than they do about the engine that they developed for your car. Not counting minor 5w30 vs 5w40 type differences, and not counting any local optimisation the service centre decides on - see what your manual specifies and stick to it.

Didn't want to risk anything so got exact CH4 Mineral Oil.
So, this time did DIY Oil Change and periodic service.

Used Shell HX5 15W-40.

Surprisingly, Shell is expensive than Mobil and Total. Got 5L for 1500. Total was in the range of 1300 and Mobil around 1200, IIRC.

Thanks for your suggestions Gentlemen, figured out DIY is really satisfying.

It won’t harm your car at any rate.

Have been using 5W-30 all these years, it is preferable to switch now? I'm asking since ambient temperatures in summers rise to 45-46º.

Which brand is recommended?
In Shell, I recommend Rimula R4 15W40 API-CI4+ . Excellent oil for Hyundai diesels. Engine becomes very smooth. Using for past 25k kms on my i20 Diesel.

https://www.amazon.in/Shell-Rimula-1...zcF9hdGY&psc=1

In Castrol, I recommend Castrol CRB TURBOMAX 15W-40 CI-4+ . Again, an excellent oil. You cannot go wrong with either of them

https://www.amazon.in/Castrol-TURBOM...cx_mr_hp_atf_m

Note - 5L can is sufficient for 1.6L Verna CRDi

Thank you! Will choose either of these during my next service.

True. As such the total volume it can hold is 5.3L. Just few days back when I changed oil it took slightly less than 5L around 4.8~4.9L.

If you want to stick to mineral there is also Mobil Delvac MX and the even more premium - for a mineral - Mobil 1 Delvac full synthetic.

Re: All about diesel engine oils

Hi All,

I have been using AMSOIL TURBO TRUCK 5W-40 fully synthetic oil which is API-CK4 rated in my 2019 Hyundai elite i20 1.4 CRDI from the day it completed 30k kms and currently ODO reading is at 65k kms.

I am draining this oil after 20k kms which I cover in 9-10 months usually.

I am aware of OEM oil change interval recommendations but as this is a very advanced engine oil and the supplier also suggested to go for 20k kms, I was draining it after 20k kms.

Am I running this oil for too long?

Service centre guys also use synthetic oil for 15k kms but this will most probably be a shell synthetic oil which is API CH4 rated.

If you ask any manufacturer of engine oil officially, the answer would be plain - follow vehicle manufacturer's recommended intervals.

As you are doing 20k in less than a year, you are basically driving a lot on the highways. I would recommend to change oil filter somewhere in between and continue with this oil.

If you are having extreme usage (heavy load etc.) i would recommend that you do it every 10k instead, irrespective of the oil you use.

The issue here is not the engine oil, but the Oil filter, another aspect which we very casually ignore. I would recommend replacing the oil filter at 10k as suggested by fellow Bhpian MT_Hyderabad and top up. The oil may have extended drain intervals, but not the filter.

Re: All about diesel engine oils

My Ford Figo 1.4 tdci is due to service. Have run 12k kms with castrol magnatec synthetic oil.

For upcoming oil change have ordered - Meguin 5W30 Synthetic Car Engine Oil (5 L) [https://lrlmotors.com/products/meguin-5w30-5l].

Website says its compatible with figo diesels recommended oil. Hope I have taken the right decision. Any comments on this oil?

Beyond that it is a somewhat old formulation? It complies with the ford spec so it won’t hurt your car. What good it does beyond ford oem oil you will have to try over 10k km and decide for yourself.

Re: All about diesel engine oils

My 2018 Jeep Compass 2.0 D 4x4 is in need of a oil change and for unknown reasons my trust is not too high with the Jeep Service center regarding use of correct grade. The manual says 4.2L of 5w30 ACEA C2 synthetic.
Need help finding options that will work best.

Shell Helix Ultra 0w-30 would be one of the best oil.

The best answer would be "go to amazon and find whichever 5w30 or 0w30 ACEA C2 - or even C3 - you like best, that is fully synthetic and suits your pocket". Shell, Mobil, Castrol, Idemitsu, Valvoline .. take your pick. Or if you feel particularly rich, Amsoil, Addinol, Castrol Edge etc.

Re: All about diesel engine oils

Jeep service personnel poured 'mopar 0w20 diesel engine oil' in my petrol Jeep compass during scheduled service, confidently telling me that it is ok to use this oil in all bs6 cars regardless of whether it's a diesel or petrol engine and that they've been using this oil in all the petrol cars lately.

As per the service manual they were supposed to put 'mopar 0w30 gasoline engine oil'. It was only after I escalated the matter and offered to put this on social media as well as inform FCA that the service center in Pune accepted the blunder and replaced with the correct gasoline grade oil as recommended in the Jeep manual.
