No, I didn't end up doing it eventually. When I spoke with the Kia Service Manager, he advised against it given that the car is BS6 ph 2.

Btw, did you go ahead with it? Regarding mineral vs synthetic oil, he mentioned they are using semi synthetic oil, didn't probe much on whether or not only mineral or synthetic should be used. I too feel a thicker grade oil in our hot conditions might do better, but I don't want to deflect from the recommended grade.
No problem at all! Did the SM give any reason on why it isn’t advised for a BS6.2 engine?

The service advisor I spoke to in Bengaluru insisted that 5k change is not needed as the company recommends a 10k change interval. I informed him that as I drive every day in stop-go traffic in Bengaluru and also there’s lots of dust on my driving route, the owners manual categorises this under severe usage in the maintenance schedule section. He outright denied that such a thing is mentioned in the manual . They stock 5w30 mineral and synthetic oil and this grade is OK according to the owner’s manual (either C3 or C2).

I’ve currently run 4K kms. So I’ve to decide soon if I’ve to change it every 5k kms with mineral oil or just use synthetic oil every 10k kms. Currently I’m in my native and will be speaking to the service manager here and we have a very good relationship (all our Hyundai cars are brought and serviced with the same dealership). Will decide based on his advice. My inclination too is towards changing it every 5k kms with mineral oil for my peace of mind and the engine’s health. I’ll keep you updated on what he says.

The Service Manager stated that changing oil early wasn't really necessary as the ph2 diesels are well calibrated and it won't yield any substantial increase in performance or lesser oil dilution (he did say that oil dilution is a common condition in all diesels, particularly BS6, and shouldn't be a cause of concerns as long as the oil level doesn't go up very high). While I got convinced, I feel I should have had it changed just for my peace of mind. Please do let us know what Hyundai SM says .

Interesting that Hyundai recommends 5w30 grade for the same engine. Kia has only 0w20 C5 grade mentioned for the Seltos. Here is what the owner's manual says:

Fuel dilution is common in diesels that use extremely low viscosity oils for fuel saving. But it is definitely not what you want or what your engine wants.

Read this carefully - it explains the issue much better than I can.

It is still pointless to discuss all this with your service advisor or service manager. So, my suggestion would be to politely nod and smile, praise them for their technical knowledge and take steps to protect your engine.

My advice would be to - as long as your car is in warranty - just change your oil to the 0w20 C5 that the dealership is providing, but don't run it for 10k km (or even, like in my A4, 15k km in one year).

Change it within a maximum of 7500 km / 5000 miles and 6 months if not a bit earlier. Either refill with the C5 0w20, which is quite expensive and somewhat rare on the open market - only in castrol edge and mobil1 esp x2 and in both cases you'd probably need to have your oil dealer order it, as most of the 0w20 oils on the open market are ACEA C2. Or alternatively refill with an ACEA C3 5w30 oil. Careful, if you own a VW / Audi / Skoda, not all 5w30 C3 are suitable, check for VW 504/507 support in addition to C3.

All engines consume/burn a bit of oil over a period of 10K, what I do, is refill or top-up the balance left over oil at a mark of around 6k to 7k, obviously after checking the dipstick.

You won’t need to top up as long as the dipstick level remains above the min level.

If you’re facing oil loss after 6k km then drain and refill the oil and switch to a better grade of oil (5w30 or 0w20 tends to wear out far earlier than the 10-15k km specified as a drain interval)

The left over oil can definitely be kept in a tightly closed can for the next change.

Can you specify the better grade for 1.3 DDIS Engine because user manual specifies to use 5w30.

You can use a 5w40 without any hassle but for light usage 5w30 is just fine

Thankyou for the feedback. My FNG is currently using 10w40 Total 7000 which is semi synthetic oil. I told him in user manual its mentioned as 5w30 but he insisted this is good and we will use it. He charged me 1750 for 3.1 litre of oil.

Can i continue with the same? If not please suggest me a suitable oil brand and if i can continue with semi synthetic. My usage is 7000-8000 kms per year.

Regards,
Prabu

Re: All about diesel engine oils

Greetings Fellow BHPians,

This is my first post in this thread. Writing this to seek advice for our beloved 2014 Hyundai Xcent 1.1 diesel . The car's ODO stands at 164K kms and is still going strong, no major issues till date. Planning to take the car for a major service at 170K kms.

Some question:
- Should I get the engine flushed at next service? (The engine has never been flushed, only oil changes at every 10K)
- Is flushing the engine healthy (especially for a high mileage one like this)?
- Any engine oil recommendations (Currently using castrol)?

I had asked my FNG guy regarding flushing and he told that it can create problems at times.

Thanks & Regards.

Re: All about diesel engine oils

If you already ran 1.6L km on castrol what do you need in a new oil? If you want just get any other more expensive oil with the same spec that your car requires and you should be fine.

No need to flush if your car has had regular oil changes. Instead fill with the cheapest oil available, drive it hard for a few hundred km and then change the oil.

Thanks @hserus for a very prompt reply!

Mainly, I was thinking of a new oil for improved NVH, though major service will also take care of that up to some extent. But, I was still curious on giving other superior brands a try.

Oil change time for my 2005 Scorpio - 2.6 SZ Plus, run 198k km. My mechanic has suggested Fossilex FX Max 15W40 oil. I haven't heard about this brand before, a quick search says this is preferred by many heavy vehicles. I live in Vellore where summer temperatures can touch 45 degree C.

Never heard of it before but since Feo is cheaper, any advantage in going for an aftermarket oil that is not that popular and costs more?

SZ plus is a much loved engine, I would be hesitant to experiment with an oil like that.
