Hi rajeev,

Yes I know that there is often no need to change the brake discs.
But in Germany this will be done anyway because the labour time is most expensive compared to the parts. But regarding the wheel bearings I am not sure. I would kick oneself if the garage repairs the brakes and told me that the bearings should also be replaced....

Well I think there is no way around for me. I have to jack the car up and check the discs for grooves and spin the wheels to check the bearings.

But again to my question no. 1 .... What else do I need except the pads and maybe the discs and wheel bearings? What brand is common for discs and pads? Should both from the same brand?

Any guesses on what this can be?
Check both your Tyres. I had similar problem. On closer inspection, I found one screw embedded in tread that was making the flapping sound.

In which case you can buy a matching set, which invariably be of the same manufacturer.
The axial thrust bearings for front wheels have to be checked for play by assessing the vertical in/out play.

If you have never changed wheel bearings, you will be better off changing them. Along with that also change the rubber "boot" and any associated seals, as they deteriorate with time.

I have checked the wheels now. While spinning the right left one I noticed a slight grinding noise on full 360 axis spin.
On the right side it was the same but not at the whole spin.

The discs are smooth with some light kinks/waves. Not smooth as a window. Donīt know if itīs ok or not.
Well I will order discs and pads. Would be the best solution.

I will check the price of the bearings and consider.
Rubber boot and seals? Do they belong to the brakes? Hmmm... What ever these parts are... I guess they would be hard got get in Germany.

re: Maruti Alto - Issues

I've couple of queries:

1. I've been hearing a strange belt noise for the past 10+ days every time I start the car. It lasts for 5-6 seconds and then goes away.
2. When the car is idling, there is another weird noise (don't flame me for this - I don't know how to put it in a better way) which goes off instantly when I depress the clutch. It comes back once I release it.

It's a 5-year old with 24K on the ODO (the car is used very sparingly) and always serviced at proper intervals.

What might have gone wrong and will it need immediate attention or can it wait for the next service due (in mid Feb)?

1. Please describe the noise... Does it appear with every start e.g. 5 starts a day, every morning or did the car stand long. Have you checked the fan belt? This could be the fan belt which is sliding and has to be tightened or renewed. This powers some important things usually. This noise (if you mean a loud squeaking) appears usually when itīs cold in Winter. At the moment I hear this every morning here in Germany.

re: Maruti Alto - Issues

Hi all!

I have also some issues with my Alto FF. Seems to be a never ending story.

1. Does somebody have a diagram what parts do belong to the exhaust system? Starting with the manifold and ending at the rear silencer. The reason is that here in Germany many dealers offer parts but I have doubt that they are for the Alto FF....

2. The bonnet doesnīt shut completely. The hood cable is OK but I notice that there is no real strain. Seems that the spring which is usually used for that has broken (lost or whatever...) but I had not the time yet to dismantle and check it. Is this a special spring or could this be fixed on another way?

Not necessary to look elsewhere. Your needs will be met in this forum itself; check this link
The last post contains the part numbers.

Hi Rajeev,

Thanks for this. As I noticed im_srini had provided scans from his helpful manual.
And the first picture provided by the dutch neighbour looks like mine.
Meanwhile I found at Bosal a helpful catalogue with images also.

re: Maruti Alto - Issues

Hi All,

My Alto 1.1L sits at 1.1L on the odo as well now

It is performing flawlessly but I have a niggling issue with the car and seek resolution here.

During cold starts the car takes a delayed cranking. As in when I turn the key nothing happens for a while and than after a while the car starts cranking. The delay in cranking is inversely proportional to the outside temp. Lesser the temp. more is the delay in cranking. Once heated up it starts fine.

If I start the car at say 4'O clock in the morning at peak delhi winters (3 degree C) the delay is as much as 15 seconds. On the other hand if I start the car at mid noon delay is hardly a second.

I have changed the lock set (ignition key) in anticipation as I had faced similar issue with another vehicle and it seemed to work fine for a week but now back to the old story.

Please help.

Cheers
Vishwas

Have you checked your battery? A weak battery can cause exactly the same issue as you mentioned.

re: Maruti Alto - Issues

I would first inspect if there is any bad connection on the battery terminals; if sure that it isn't the battery itself. Also get the ignition switch, (where you actually put in the key) checked.

My old Fiat 1100D developed this problem once & was rectified by changing this switch. Though the technology has changed a lot since, but it will be a good place for starting the inspection.

Also, try starting the car with clutch paddle depressed.

Regards.

I suspect this noise is coming from the transmission. Even my '06 model has the same problem. Its done 73000 on the odometer but I have been living with this noise since it was around 55000kms. Do you hear that same sound when you De-accelearte in 2nd,3rd or 4th gear at a particular point when you have reached the lowest speed of that gear? Its a grating kind of a sound.
But problem is even I am not able to figure out the reason.
