IMO, even VW does not command the snob-value of the German Trio. Tiguan may be competent in its own way, positioning it as a direct rival to the X1 will not win it too many customers.

BTW, AFAIK Tiguan competes with X3. Correct me if I'm wrong.

The other 10 percent (mostly less than 5) are either enthusiasts like us who have some knowledge or people who want to spend on themselves & not on the perceptions of others.

There are so many people who have asked me for advice on a car in the 20-30 lakh price range. Ive suggested a Teana or a Superb, based purely on how much more they offer in terms of comfort as im talking about people who will be chauffeur driven all the time & would be seated at the back. Not one has bothered to even check these cars out, rubbishing it instantly & buying either a 3 series or a C class even though both are cramped at the rear when compared to the Teana or the Superb & also above the price range they had decided to spend.
You're right! Tongue firmly in cheek!

I'd forgotten that I was staying in a country where several people are brand-conscious! It's only us who would think twice before putting-down 30 lakhs on a car that's as basic as a premium hatch, a la, the Punto, with its Blue & Me technology, climate-control and electric ORVMs

Amazing scoop and great review Sid. This could really be a money spinner for BMW if priced in the band you mentioned. I loved the functionality of this vehicle and of course the form!

Yes, definitely not a match with the German trio. And I guess with the new X3 coming around (bigger in size than the outgoing X3, to give space to X1), Tiguan will have to be content fighting it out with the X1.

On a side note, I saw the new X3 during its Singapore launch (at the BMW world exhibition last week), and it looked stunning. Unlike X1, the new X3 surely will not polarise opinions. Personally I feel that X3 is so far their best looking model in the post Bangle era.

nice review SID,i think the x1 will be priced above 25L

So now we have the option to go for a 24L 3series corp edition or x1. out of the two i guess x1 will make more sense.

Any idea when it is getting launched?

Re: First Drive: BMW X1 xDrive 20D (PPP)

Got my parents to visit the bmw showroom at chennai, since i presently stay at Banglore so i couldn't go. there are X1's on display there at the chennai showroom the price inclusive of insurance and road tax when registered at chennai is.........

36 Lakhs on road all inclusive for the diesel Highline

a whopping 36 Lakhs! for the diesel. only the Highline version is available for the diesel.as told by the sales rep 7 lakhs has been added on for tax an insurance from the base pice of the car. how ever if i was to register the car at pondycherry it would only come up to 32 Lakh. the petrol version i did not enquire about. i believe the bmw showroom at bangalore also has one car after a conversation with the manager over the phone.

sales rep says. the price will not change after official launch.they are already collecting bookings

at 32/36 lakhs all my hopes of owning one are under question.

updated the info here as i was looking for info about the X1 and this was the only thread.

Re: First Drive: BMW X1 xDrive 20D (PPP)

A 10 lakh difference OTR between the diesel and petrol?
Is it the petrol Corporate Ed?

And yeah, the road tax system is quite absurd. Places like Pondy, Chandigarh, Punjab and the NCR have incredibly low taxes compared to Kerala, TN and KA. Its quite infuriating. Sadder part is the deplorable state of Kerala roads despite the heavy taxation (which politicians and officials ascribe to the monsoons!).
On the bright side, unlike in KA, the RTO does not fine non-KL cars, so one can get the car registered at Pondy or Mahe and use it here.
