re: Story of my Italian horse - Fiat Punto 90HP. EDIT: Sold!

Hi Raj,
I've gone through your thread, thanks a lot for taking the pains to share it here. I loved the test drive of a 75BHP Punto MJD and am most likely opting for a 90HP Punto shortly.

Though I'm yet to TD it, I've started reading up on various ownership threads here. I have one query for you. While reading Sidindica's test drive report I could see that the TD vehicle has Linea's console but here and on other threads I could see that the console is carried over from the regular Punto.

So my question here is, do we have an option to chose the console? I love the Linea's console and feel it would look wonderful in the Punto.

Have attached a few pics from that thread here.

Here's the link to that thread.

Hiren

Yes, I have seen that thread & I can confirm that you DO NOT get linea's console on the Punto 90 hp. Punto 90 hp's console is the same one as in the 75 hp.

From a factory level, I dont think swapping of the instrument console is possible but I guess if you want, the dealership may do it for you. it should be a easy swap & a direct fit.

Damn, I guess it should be ok. Its not going to be a deal breaker at all.

Thanks

I had compared the two consoles and the indicator positions match, so as you said, even though its not available as stock, dealers might be able to fit it in Punto.

Over the last 1000 kms of city driving (98%) with AC on (100%), 14 kmpl is what my Pintu is delivering -

This is what the national engine can deliver in city (with less traffic) with 100% AC -

re: Story of my Italian horse - Fiat Punto 90HP. EDIT: Sold!

That's a good mileage. I am able to get only 12 KMPL on my 90HP with 100% AC in the city. Mine is two months old which has run 3000KMS till date. Is there any driving ways to improve the mileage?

The above is with reasonably empty city traffic. Usually I get 14-15 kmpl in normal city traffic & 13 kmpl in dense city traffic.

If you want to drive a "90hp" efficiently, try the following -

1) dont rev too much, shift at 2000 rpm. Now, dont complain that the Punto feels slow!
2) Drive at a constant speed & avoid braking hard. Drive as smoothly as possible.
3) At high speeds, try to give as little pressure to the throttle as possible. You will surprised to notice how well the Punto 'coasts'.
4) Dont lug the engine also. If the rpm falls below 900 rpm, shift down rather than pulling in the same gear.
5) On open roads, drive anywhere between 70-90 kmph in 5th gear.

P.S.: I have seen 22 kmpl on the MID in empty city traffic with AC off.

re: Story of my Italian horse - Fiat Punto 90HP. EDIT: Sold!

I must say, I had a very pleasant experience with the TATA-FIAT ASC, Fortune cars, Andheri. I called them yesterday to take a service appointment for today. Yesterday evening I got a confirmation call & then a confirmation sms stating my job card number!

Gave my Pintu for its scheduled second free service today. Had an appointement of 9:30 am, reached the A.S.S. at 9:35 am. Car was parked inside, waited for 10 mins & met the service advisor - a very warm, helpful & well mannered gentleman - Mr. Akshay.

Apart from the second service, I had a few rattles in my car, bonnet lock was getting stuck if I pull the release lever too hard & I wanted to get the suspension checked for any unusual noises.

By about 5 pm, I got a call from the SA that my car is ready & the interior is being vacuumed. Simultaneously, I also got a computer generated sms from Fortune saying that my car's service is done & is ready for delivery. The SA once again messaged me that the car is ready.

When I reached the ASC, as expected, the car was standing near the entrance. Everything was in order. Just that there were some dirt marks on the doors. To solve the rattling, they used padding between the door panels & changed the door clips.

As I drove off, I was under the impression that with the new oil, air filter, etc., the engine will feel more responsive. I did not feel any huge difference as such. I must admit that I was driving in traffic at speeds no more than 30 kmph. This sunday, I am driving to Igatpuri (Team-BHP meet) & maybe then on the highways, I would notice some difference. I also noticed some slight (very feeble) rattling still present, but again, I admit that I was driving without music.

Details of service as follows:

1) Engine oil - 4 Lit. - Rs. 2065
2) Oil filter - Rs. 354
3) Fuel filter - Rs. 1776
4) Air filter - Rs. 293
5) AC filter - Rs. 47
6) Adhesive weight strip - Rs. 238
7) Door pad clip - Rs. 24
8) Wheel balancing - Rs. 400

Total - Rs. 5941/-

Hi Raj,

Good to know that you had a good experience, mine was a horrible one with Pandit Auto in Pune.
The overall cost incurred in the 2nd service is as expected, however I feel they shouldn't have charged you for 4 ltrs of oil as punto takes in 3.2 ltrs max.

Also, I have a question can you tell me when you rev in 3rd car at what RPM does the turbo kicks in??
In my GP90, the torque starts to build up by 1700 RPM and the turbo is unleashed at 2400 - 2500 RPM - is this the same case in yours?

Exactly. The speed builds up from 1800 rpm and then the slight push in the back feel can be noticed at around 2500 rpm.

re: Story of my Italian horse - Fiat Punto 90HP. EDIT: Sold!

Guys, took my Pintu for a nice highway drive, courtesy team-bhp Mumbai meet.

My sincere request to all Punto owners - take this car to a ghat section, full of tight twisties. The way this car handles surprised me, even after 1 year of ownership. It is a very very well mannered hatch and is a delight on the highways.

By the way, noticed brake dust for the first time on my Pintu, any reasons to worry?

re: Story of my Italian horse - Fiat Punto 90HP. EDIT: Sold!

Did a long journey in my Punto (mumbai-pune) yesterday, some 400 kms both ways. As soon as I hit the express highway, I was at a constant 120-130 kmph.

+ Stability at high speeds is fantastic.
+ Ride at high speeds is superb.
+ Performance of 90hp is adequate, though a little more power would have been nice.

- NVH is just average at that speed. It needs a 6th gear.
- PUNTO'S FRONT SEATS LACK UNDER THIGH SUPPORT. My legs were aching by the time I reached home.

FE as showed by the MID was 17.5 kmpl. This is with AC with 90% highway & 10% city driving.
