Thanks Ramkya sir.
Sadly these Vultures are almost extinct, and the one you saw near Rohtang as very few left there. They are permanent resident of Koksar and Rohtang.

But they are scary and big. I saw them just before Jawahar Tunnel, A whole group of 20-30 I guess.

Just did some google, they are called Long Billed Vulture. and here is a link to interesting Conservation plan for these vulture families Powered by Google Docs

Hey Rajiv, great snaps of the lake, the observatory, the terrain, essentially everything. Do post more random pics if possible.

These are definitely one of the scariest vultures I've seen, up close & personal! A few Km after Rohtang, I'd stopped for a photo break and two of these beasties decided to give us company. One sat on my car's hood and the other on a milestone next to the car scaring the bejesus outta wifey and myself. I was so perplexed as to what to do that taking a snap didn't even come to mind.

Bharat, As TSK mentioned there seems a ritual of adding Nitrogen at the Observatory. Were you able to witness it?

We were little late for that, and there was Scientist group who were doing some research there. So access to guests were very limited. But I guess more than that ritual, its the telescope and the view around which the highlight of the place

BTW there is a very interesting and funny story about this place Wakah where we took break. Basically I realized we were just driving and driving, which was no fun. So we decided to take long wala break. And then came the idea of making coffee and maggi. Safari had supply for full one month (I guess, I scared them too much ).

And I took out my 12V Water Kettle, which worked very well on plains, but hills and specially Ladakh is different. Things which never ever fail, fails here.

And it failed...

So next was to get boiling water from a very small shop, and he was very happy to see somebody actually stopping there, other than locals . So he ensured unlimited supply boiling drinking water . He did mentioned that nobody stops here, which is good for us, we wanted to enjoy nature+coffee+maggi minus mad crowd.

So while we were having fun, our two HR and UP number cars were attracting lots of attention from passing cars. And then two cars decided to also stop there. Then one Innova and few bikers and one santro.

In just 30 mins that place was turned into a festival place. Locals were just amused to see many outsiders at that place. must be around 25-30 people in total.

I could feel the shop guy has panicked, with so many customers all of the sudden .
