This sunday I got rid of the Potenza GIII and fitted the indica with 185/60R13 Apollo Acelere tyres.
The requirement was simple
1. Tubeless
2. 185/60R13
3. Cheap
4. Long life and hard compound to be resistant to sidewall cuts and punctures.
The two brands which met the criteria were Goodyear NCT5 and the Apollo Acelere.
The former was around 2250/tire, but decided against that because it felt heavier and the rubber compound was soft.
So that left me with the Acelere option.
The car has done around 100kms since then, mostly on city roads. Have not tested handling much except for fast corners of flyover exits.
The initial impression
1. Light steering :
Steering feels much lighter than the Potenza GIII. I don't know why. Maybe light weight? Or different tread pattern
2. Slight lightfootedness: The front suspension is kaput, so the car has been a little skittish, felt a little more so on the new tyres, but I expect that once the suspension is fixed, it will be back to normal
3. Low noise : Thats noticeable. esp when cruising at 100 in top gear.
4. Bland looks : V tread looks cool!
On the handling front the car is more sure footed. But comparing a 45000 done Potenza to a brand new tyre does not indicate anything. Even a S322 will handle better than a treadless performance tyre.
But if we take cornering ability, its slightly less than what the Potenza's had when they were new, but I doubt it will be very significant. I had a good suspension when I got the Potenzas.
The acelere's are not directional, so I guess the design is geared more towards an overall benefit than pure performance as the potenza's were.
Moreover the technology is michelin, so under the hood its an energy, with indian stamp.
Verdict : Great tyre for the price. Value for money. Very less noise. They advertise low noise in their adverts, and they are right. I hope they are right about long life and puncture resistance too!
If you don't want an outright performance tyre, or can do without the good aggressive looks that a V tread gives, then this is the tyre for you. I am sold on these, and if my next car comes with tube type tyres, it may get the Apollo's too!
As for the pics, I don't have any but got one from the website. See the simple tread pattern. Not much show here, if you see side by side to a potenza GIII
