I'll PM you

Also in the Calcutta Birla industrial museum is this replica model of the 1886 Benz 3 wheeler motorwagen, MB apprentices also made many replicas. I don't know who made this one.

Thanks Julian. Nice to know we still find such early cars on display. I wonder what the future will bring. Very interesting replica there. A genuine MB replica is on display in Pune at the factory.

Karl, This is a two door Morris 8 which is very rare to find these days. It has now reached the top at Koregaon Park.

The BLA registration pertains to the Bengal Presidency of the 1930's. And no, there's no fancy number here for this car. Can you guess who the owner was of this Great car? Hold your breath - it was Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose! The car is on display at Netaji Bhavan, Elgin Road, in the heart of Kolkata. Netaji Bhavan was his house, from where he escaped in 1941 to Bihar, despite the police patrolling and tight security within this house to prevent him giving them a slip.
The Bose car is a Wanderer. I've seen this car up close a few years ago.

Incidentally, has anyone seen Shyam Benegal's "Bose, The Forgotten Hero"? In that movie, they do show him escaping in a white period car. But I couldn't make out if it was a Wanderer. Was it?

I've been to Shantiniketan museum about 6 years ago, and distinctly remember his black Humber. The TOI report is full of inaccuracies, which I'll correct:

1) First, Tagore's car is no Super Snipe. It was a black 30's saloon, and looked something like this:

Vintage and Classic Cars on Display in India-1934humbertwelvesaloon.jpg

2) The car wasnt "ravaged by nature" or any such fancy thing. How could it, as it was garaged inside from day one? The truth is, it lay in the same state of neglect (and nominal security) as his original Nobel Prize. One day when the museum authorities opened the car up, they were shocked to find the original engine stolen. Imagine, someone stole the entire engine without the authorities being aware of it!

What a shame that they didnt bother to do anything with the car even then. The engine story was quickly hushed up. Only later, when the Nobel Prize got stolen and the entire world's attention turned to Shantiniketan, the authorities decided to pull up their socks. Now they're trying to source parts for the car before the engine story is rediscovered. Blasphemy!

Thanks for the updates predatorwheelz -did not know the inside story about the Humber. True but pathetic!
Yes I have corrected myself -Netajis car was in fact the Wanderer as described in some literature that I bought from the Netaji Bhawan.Incidentally, I put up the post before reading the literature and so the Adler goof up. But Karl and harit has also corrected me in his earlier post here on this thread!

Picture taken by family for me at 'Black Cadillac' Hyderabad, many years back. I wonder what this display is based on. Pity if they cut up a good car for this.

There was also an outlet in Pune with similar displays, cut up and mounted on the walls.

That car was a good Morris 8 which was chopped in half and mounted on the wall by this Sudhakar guy.

For a long time after the rear was lying at his place until it dissapeared to the scrap yard

Wasif,
You're referring to the car in Karl's pic.? What is this "black cadillac" place anyways? Looks like some kind of cafe or pub....
And I remember you saying he also did a similar thing to an Austin 7? You even gave him a piece of your mind for it?

It was a pub, well known at the time. Does it survive?

Yes !! He turned that sweet Chummy into a garden bar for one member of the Hyderabad chapter of the "More money than Brains Club"

I wanted to give him much more than a piece of my mind believe me.

That Black Cad Pub used to be at the place wher RP Road ends near the Parade grounds in Sec Bad. I guess its history now and wonder what happened to the poor thing hanging on the bar.

Spiritual guru Meher Baba had apparently undertaken a tour in 1938/39 in a Chevy bus, today referred to as the Blue Bus. It is displayed in Meherazad, near Ahmednagar, though only the body (engine, front etc were removed).
