Here is the link to the restaurant. Unfortunately I did not click any snaps of the car.
There was a green Austin parked in the restaurant 'Portico' on JM road for many years. Perhaps they have renamed the place.

As far as I remember, this car was red and black.

Re: Vintage and Classic Cars on Display in India

Today a flower show was organised by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation to commemorate its 75th anniversary. Mayor Shri Anil Sole inaugurated the event. He is seen delivering his inaugural speech in a picture here.
A 1928 Austin 7 belonging to the erstwhile Gond King was on display.Incidentally, Central India was an empire of the Gonds.
The erstwhile Gondwana Kingdom can be considered to be the eastern part of the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, the parts of Madhya Pradesh bordering to the north of it, and parts of the west of Chhattisgarh. Even parts of Orissa and A.P.

Interesting - I bet he was the only King to ever ride in a humble Austin Seven

Re: Vintage and Classic Cars on Display in India

This poor Austin could have done with an undercarriage wash.

I wonder what thought process was involved whilst fitting coil springs in the rear?

Obviously done by a non technical person.

The Ford truck used in the funeral procession of Gandhiji appears to be on display in Allahbad, and it looks to be in good shape too. Wonder if it runs.

This Fiat was on display for a week some 2-3 years back in UB City, Bangalore during some ongoing art festival.

Re: Vintage and Classic Cars on Display in India

Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri's Fiat Super Select, that he had owned during the last four years of his life (Birth 2nd Oct 1904 - Death 11th Jan 1966).

Vintage and Classic Cars on Display in India-ourtibute_clip_image002_0000.jpg

He had bought this car for Rs 12,000 in 1962 (his first ever) and had to struggle a lot to save this amount. Though he was not interested, his family members pestered him to buy a car. He had found out that he had only Rs 7000/- as balance in his bank a/c, while upon enquiries it was found that a Fiat cost Rs 12,000. He could get a loan and so he applied. The bank processed his papers and sanctioned him he loan in one and a half hour. Surprised by the bank's efficiency, he called the bank officer who had sanctioned the loan and told him to process requests from the general public with the same efficiency.

Hello Karl,

There was a movie made recently about this truck and about this particular journey. The name of the movie was "Road to Sangam" , the movie won an award at Cannes & Berlin as also at the film fare awards for best story. Paresh Rawal and Om Puri made up the cast. The actual protagonist of the story is a motor mechanic who is still there in Allahabad.

The story writer cum director is a Team BHP member. He got in touch with me (through Team BHP) for loan of a Ford V-8 engine around which the story revolves.

The vehicle in Allahabad was not running the last time I saw it.

Regards
Chauhan

More pictures of the same truck from Photodivision GOI. Amazing how the entire fabricated / custom built structure around the truck still stands the test of time:
