Re: Dealerships, Coachbuilders, Vehicle Assembly in India

The post above shows VST owning the showroom, and I just chanced upon this lovely post on VST's appointment as dealers for Austin / Ashok Motors in 1949.

Re: Dealerships, Coachbuilders, Vehicle Assembly in India

United Motors of Rajasthan supplied this Royal Enfield Bullet. Do they still survive?

Re: Dealerships, Coachbuilders, Vehicle Assembly in India

My contribution from the archives of Daimler-Benz AG
The legend on the archive for the photos read:

The Automobile Co. Ltd. in Bombay (today Mumbai), India, around 1914: the company represented various other car brands along with Mercedes.

The Automobile Co. Ltd. in Bombay (today Mumbai), India: the sales outlet of Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft ran a workshop of its own. The photo was taken around 1914.

A query for those in the know: can anyone confirm if any of the cars pictured above are actually Mercedes-Benz? Also, would be great to know what area of Bombay was this dealership and workshop located? If I didn't read the legend, could have sworn that the first photo was from somewhere in England.

Re: Dealerships, Coachbuilders, Vehicle Assembly in India

Found this lovely image, though poor quality, while cleaning up old files - apologies I do not have a source.

Where was New India Motors? The structure looks possible like Delhi or Calcutta. The cars look like Singer saloons - and don't miss the refrigerators on display too.

Another interesting shot showing an English car being readied for dispatch to VST - presumably an Austin A40? Again I'm afraid I do not know the source of the image.

Per this link, The Automobile Co. ltd was located on Queens road. Also happened to have a few more dealerships from back in the day.

Certainly bears a great resemblance to Connaught Place. A few more from there. Sorry, if posted before.

The Studebaker is DLZ-309 and the FIAT is DLC-3777. The bus (Fargo ?) is an Air India coach (DLC-1570).

Possibly a Cadillac under the Art Gallery sign ?

The 2nd board in the pic perhaps says " British motor car company " BMC was there in Calcutta as well ,the quality does not allow me to zoom and read it with certainty.

@Travancore - The pillars in CP are usually one (expect at corners ) and not two together as in the pic .
