Re: Dealerships, Coachbuilders, Vehicle Assembly in India

I have seen Auto Distributors LTD dealer badges on Fiat cars, but this is the first time I'm seeing them on a Dodge Kingsway 1956.

National Garage, Mount Road, Nagpur supplied a new Fiat in 1959. Posted earlier by Manish, from his car here. (MPR 4142, 1959 Fiat 103D Select Restoration.)

Great Eastern Motor Co. Ltd, Calcutta

Located in the heart of the city, at the address mentioned in its advertisement, Great Eastern Motor claimed to be the largest garage in the country, selling both new and reconditioned cars from the early 1900s. Besides small transport like the British cycle cars, it sold large vehicles often with specially-made bodies for zamindars and princes.

Great Eastern Motor ran an intense advertising campaign around the time of the British mega-event called the Delhi Durbar (around 1911-12). Its selling point was that it would make special bodywork like a state car (with a pedestal for a throne chair) or a landaulet (a car where the driver sat in the open while the rich passengers sat in a closed body with two facing rows).

Re: Dealerships, Coachbuilders, Vehicle Assembly in India

In 1953 the Morris Minor convertible was advertised as Built in India by the French Motor Car Co. Ltd. We have seen them as sale agents in the past, but I did not know about their involvement in building the cars as well. Wonder what the degree of assembly was.

If I'm not wrong this is a 1952 Advertisement, because by 1953 803cc ohv model was introduced where the hood monogram was changed.

The ad was published May 1953. Very often for the Indian market some models continued to sell longer than the home market versions, and also often the illustrations need not have been totally accurate.

Re: Dealerships, Coachbuilders, Vehicle Assembly in India

While we have often seen ads for Bombay Cycle as agents for Dodge cars in Bombay and Malaviya Brothers & Co in Rajkot, this is the first time I am noticing Kalyanji Dhanji & Co. for the Mandvi-Kutch belt.

A selection of ads from The Hindu, dated 15th August 1947.

Coachbuilders Simpson and Co. Madras

The Union Co (Motors) Ltd, Mount Road, Madras, at this time still distributors for Standard, Wolseley, Nash, Morris trucks and BSA Motorcycles. They would soon set up Standard Motors's India operations.
Dealerships, Coachbuilders, Vehicle Assembly in India-09.png

Addison & Co. for multiple cars including Armstrong Siddeley, Chrysler, Daimler, DeSoto, Dodge, Lanchester, MG & Riley (strangely clubbed together), Morris and Plymouth cars, besides Dodge, Fargo, Morris Delivery vans and Utelicon (?) and Francis Barnet, Matchless and Triumph Motorcycles.

The Madras Motors Ltd., which I think went on to be Royal Enfield India?
