Nov 22 2016 : The Economic Times (Bangalore)
Car with a past gets cloned at $1.5 million apiece
Bloomberg

A look into how Jaguar rebuilt its XKSS Supercar, a collectible and a legend from 1957
Jaguar's new supercar has been 60 years in the making. Don't expect paddle shift, ABS, or even the luxury of electric windows -as well as a vintage look, the XKSS has vintage features to boot.
It's technically a `continuation car', a special type of replica in which production ceased but has since restarted using original designs and methods (like this Superformance MKII Slab Side Cobra or Jaguar's own Lightweight E-type). The original XKSS was made for the US market as a road-going conversion of the Le Mans-winning 1954 D-type, until a fire ripped through Jaguar's Browns Lane factory in 1957.As a result, only 16 were ever made out of the total 25-car production run.

Unsurprisingly, the cars that survived fetch a pretty penny these days. Steve McQueen owned one that's estimated to be worth up to $30 million.

According to Kev Riches, engineering manager for Jaguar Classic, a branch of the company that focuses mostly on refurbishment and maintenance of classic Jags, the XKSS project is all about replacing the nine vehicles lost in the fire. “It's almost about re-creating a piece of art,“ he said.

The team at Jaguar Classic used original drawings and supplemented them with modern tech, such as scanning the car to build 3D models to aid fabrication using retro, authentic methods. Steel and aluminum panels were hand-rolled on English wheels as they would have been in the 1950s. Some nuts were even reproduced because they can no longer be bought.

“It was about building that perfect car to the period specification, in the period way as much as possible,“ said Riches.

Under the hood, the XKSS has a 3.4-liter straight six-cylinder engine with 262hp. The company says everything from the wood of the steering wheel to the leather of the seats and the brass on the dash is exactly as it would have been in 1957, with only minor changes made for 21st century safety requirements.

The nine cars due to be built sold out almost immediately to a selection of international buyers. Riches estimates each model to have sold for around $1.5 million.

"Unravelling memories on the road"
Deccan Herald 29-11-2016

A true blue Bengalurean, 75-year-old S Jayaram Reddy remembers driving around Bengaluru in the 60s and 70s in his 1960 Fiat 1100.

“I would get dropped to school in these cars. The Fiat always grabbed the maximum attention because of its rare colour. The gold and beige colour combination Fiat was launched in 1960. We have retained the original colour. Only the roof of the car has been painted in maroon,” he informs.

Now a heritage park for vehicles that served the Indian Army
Bengaluru
TIMES NEWS NETWORK

Not just decorated men and animals, the Indian Army now has a memorial -Motorised Transport (MT) Heritage Park -to showcase some of its prized vehicles.
The Army Service Corps Centre and College (ASC) that houses the memorial has already acquired five vehicles -a Willys jeep, Jonga, the one-tonne truck, a Tata Mercedes truck and the Shaktiman truck, and is in the process of acquiring more decommissioned vehicles.

Lieutenant General SPS Katewa, commandant, ASC, said: “Many of these old vehicles have been auctioned. We are trying to acquire them and bring them to the memorial.“ Among the vehicles at the memorial, the Willys is completely restored and functional, while the others have a functional engine.

Major General NS Raj Pu rohit, the deputy commandant, had told TOI on Friday that the memorial was planned to not just keep samples of old vehicles, but also to remember and celebrate their service to the nation.“From the coasts to the hills, these vehicles have helped transport troops and ration, equipment and arms. Their service needs to be remembered,“ he had said.

On Monday , TOI visited the ASC Centre and got a glimpse of the gruelling training schedules that the personnel have to follow and all the other aspects of a soldier's life at the centre. From obstacle training to firing , the campus was abuzz with activities. “This is how we are every day . People often think that a posting in a peaceful station like Bengaluru isn't challenging, but here we prepare for war every day . And we are keeping the Army prepared too,“ said one of the officers.

"Reaching a significant milestone"
Dec 13, 2016, DHNS

The 1937 Morris Tourer was bought by Babu Kumar, exactly 20 years ago. The grand old lady has survived the test of time and has been restored to her original charm and glory.

Babu recollects that he first brought the car home in bits and pieces in a gunny bag.

“It took me one and a half years to get the car assembled and put it back on the road,” he says. “I used to regularly go to automobile spare part dealers in Shivajinagar to source the original parts of this car. After a couple of visits, I managed to get the exact match without compromising on the quality,” adds Babu, whose wife Veena and son Thushal, has also taken a keen interest in maintaining the car.

Some period coverage of a Statesman event. Unfortunately not dated, but I assume from the 1960s.

"Keeping an old passion alive"
Deccan Herald Dec 20, 2016

http://www.deccanherald.com/content/...ion-alive.html

The 1978 Mark III Ambassador was found abandoned on the road, beside the apartment that he lived in. “The car was in a bad shape when I first saw it. There were several parts of the car that were rusted and worn out. I asked the owners why they weren’t doing anything about it and they said that the brakes were jammed and they didn’t know anybody who could work on the car,” recollects Umesh. He then offered to buy the car from them for Rs 10,000. “The first thing that drew me to the car was the colour and design which was indeed rare among the Ambassador model of cars. The colour was slate grey and it was the new colour series of Mark III Ambassador that was launched at that time. The original colour has been retained and the car has been restored to its original beauty,” says Umesh.

Another car that Umesh is very fond of is his 1976 Mercedes which he bought a few years ago. “I restored the Mercedes with the help of an old friend and all the parts for this vehicle have been sourced from abroad while some were sent to me by some friends.

"Driving down the nostalgic lane"
Deccan Herald 27-12-2016

During his college days, the urge to own an old car was so overpowering, that Praveen and his friend decided to buy a Dodge Kingsway from Ramanagaram. “My classmate and I pooled in some money and went to Ramanagaram, to try and find a good car. To our disappointment all we could find for our limited budget were big buckets of rust with four wheels and a chair, used mainly to transport anything from vegetables to animals,” he says. However, he persisted and his first ever purchase was a well-maintained 1960 Fiat Select 1100. He drove the car for six years until he bought a second car. “Krishna, a mechanic who helped me restore and maintain the Fiat, owned an incredibly original 1951 Morris Minor. The moment I saw the car, I told the owner to let me know the day he wishes to sell it. Years later, he did and I became the proud owner of the Morris. I sold the Fiat to a very passionate buyer from Kolhapur,” he says.

Vintage car rally held in Jodhpur
Jodhpur:
TIMES NEWS NETWORK

It was a tryst with metal beauties of yesteryears for people of Jodhpur assembled in the Polo Groundon Friday amid ongoing horse polo tournament. Eighteen vintage cars were put on display , oldest among them being Overland of 1906 owned by the erstwhile ruler of Jodhpur Gaj Singh II.
Among the exhibits, total seven cars belonged to Gaj Singh II while others belonged to his family and a few by other buffs from the city , who presented them as their cherished treasure. The cars set off from Umaid Palace in the form of a rally which ended at the polo ground, where they were put on display .

Fleet of the cars included 1934 make Buick Super, Morris Minor and Delahay , 1933 made Pontiak, 1947 made Jeepster and Desoto etc.

The showstopper was a 1935 made Rolls Royce Phantom 2, bearing the registration number as `Jodhpur 1' with Gaj Singh II himself sitting beside the royal chauffeur. A pro ud possession for Singh, the car is the finest convertible roles in the country and possibly the only restored car.

“These cars are a treasure to cherish for us and an occasion to show that they don't lag behind in terms of technology and comfort in the bygone era,“ said Singh.

Terming this hobby as obsession, he said that this is a tradition to display these cars to public their knowledge of vintage cars which will help them exploring the automobi le history. Citizens and tourists converging in the exhibition of the vintage cars were so enthralled that they could not resist the passion of taking selfies with these cars in hoards. And the chauffeurs did not hesitate to oblige them

Re: Media Matter Related to Vintage and Classic Cars

Today's Mumbai Mirror carried an article on Drive-In theatres and has a pic of a Fiat get-together. In the pic you can see our member Hillram and his son along with his Fiat.

In those days, only Fiats and Ambassadors would line up to get entry because those were the only cars that existed in socialist India.
