2017 Land Rover Discovery launched at Rs. 71.38 lakh

The 2017 Land Rover Discovery has been launched in India. It is available in five trim levels - S, SE, HSE, HSE Luxury and First Edition. The base S variant costs Rs. 71.38 lakh, while the top-spec First Edition diesel costs Rs. 1.08 crore (ex-showroom, India).

The fifth generation Discovery made its global debut at the 2016 Paris Motor Show. Unlike the model it replaces, the new Discovery has a raked front fascia. The front-end styling is heavily influenced by the Range Rover, featuring a similar front grille, flanked by LED headlights and the 'Discovery' logo on top. The new model borrows design cues from the outgoing model including the stepped roofline and the upright rear end equipped with a power split tailgate (rated for up to 300kg).

The interior of the new Discovery has been redesigned as well. It has 7 seats and comes with multiple dual-tone upholstery options, while customers can also choose from a range of dashboard trims. The centre console features a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 380-watt Meridian audio system.

The driver environment consists of leather wrapped, multi-functional steering wheel, twin-pod instrument cluster with a central MID and a head-up display. It comes with Land Rover's Activity Key which is basically a waterproof wrist band that replaces the conventional key fob.

The new Land Rover Discovery measures 4,988 mm in length, 2,220 mm in width and 1,846 mm in height. It has a wheelbase of 2,922 mm and a claimed maximum wading depth of 900 mm. It has an approach angle of 34 degrees and 30-degree departure angle. The ramp angle is 27.5 degrees.

Land Rover is offering two engine options on the Discovery - The 2,995 cc, V6 petrol engine produces 335 BHP @ 6,500 rpm and 450 Nm of torque @ 3,500-5,000 rpm. The other engine option is a 2,993 cc, V6 diesel that develops 255 BHP @ 3,750 rpm and 600 Nm of torque @ 2000 rpm. Both engines come with an 8-speed automatic gearbox and four-wheel drive. Terrain Response 2 is available as an option (standard on the First Edition).

The new Discovery rides on air suspension with Auto Access height which lowers the vehicle to enable quick ingress and egress. Other features include start/stop, hill descent control, hill start assist, roll stability control, emergency brake assist, parallel-park assist with 360-degree camera, gradient acceleration control, ABS and traction control. It comes with adaptive cruise control with queue assist which helps maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front in heavy traffic situations.
