Drove the Maruti Fronx 1.2: My unbiased observations as an Ignis owner

Fronx doors and bonnet are heavier than those of the Ignis.

BHPian gt3t0uring recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

Fronx vis-Ă -vis Ignis:

I have an Ignis, driven 16k kms. Last weekend I had the chance to drive my cousin’s Fronx (delta+1.2) for a long trip and found some differences between the two Marutis.

Powertrain:

Fronx is equipped with the new K12N engine with dual jet tech while the Ignis is powered by the older K12M engine. Ignis is by far the better performing car, it’s more responsive and feels effortless in acceleration.

Fronx does pick up speed but needs to be revved higher for the same. In the Ignis, I usually shift to 5th gear @40kmph and it develops speed without a fuss but the Fronx just felt “numbed” down and i found myself stretching 4th gear upto 60kmph before upshifting. The gearshifts are also smoother in the Ignis and gear lever is placed better. Clutch action is exactly the same in both.

Dynamics/comfort:

This is where the Fronx shines. It feels solid and masks high speeds well. Suspension eats bumps well enough. Seats are slightly softer in the Fronx but both cars have excellent seats.

Build, fit and finish:

This is also where Fronx leads but only by a small margin. It’s got better plastics (on the door, dash), rolling the window doesn’t cause door card to flex. Fronx doors and bonnet are heavier than those of Ignis. Fronx also has better lighting with all-LED setup.

Yes, I know Ignis and Fronx are not from the same segment, and this review does not make a lot of sense. I still wanted to share my thoughts on how an additional weight of 125 kgs can affect the performance of an engine.

Fronx is a good car but I would strictly suggest to go for the Boosterjet engine if you find yourself flooring the throttle to have some fun here and there. The 1.2 Fronx is boring and commuter grade which is exceptionally fuel efficient(Fronx MID showed 22kmpl after a 500km trip).
