EV charging times could reduce to 10 mins by 2027

The challenge is to achieve these low charging times in a way that prevents harming the life of the battery itself.

Although the adoption of electric cars is increasing at a rapid pace globally, one of the main drawbacks it still faces is the long charging times. Now, according to reports, a group of researchers are said to have found a way to reduce charging times of electric cars, with a potential of bringing it down to just 10 minutes.

Reports suggest that researchers are working with the aim of bringing the charging times of electric vehicles very close to that of an ICE-powered car filling up fuel at a gas station. However, the challenge is to achieve these low charging times in a way that prevents harming the life of the battery itself.

Scientists working on lithium-ion batteries are said to be incorporating machine learning techniques that use charging data to create different protocols. Scientists are said to have trained machine learning analysis to predict the life span of batteries and the ways in which the different designs would eventually fail. The scientists then analyse the result to identify and optimise the protocols, before testing them on real batteries.

The researchers then use their models to either optimise charging methods or develop new lithium-ion batteries capable of handling fast charging. The researchers are said to be supported and funded by US Department of Energy's Vehicle Technologies Office.
