On extended warranty and service packages for my Mercedes GLA

I changed my brake pads and wipers last year and am inclined to get the cheaper package. However, the only thing I'm worried about is wheel alignment and balancing.

BHPian siren373 recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

Hi BHPians. This is my first post here so I apologize in advance if I'm posting it in the wrong section.

I have a 4-year-old GLA petrol that has a minimal running of 24k kms. My extended warranty and service package are both expiring this December and I'm planning to renew both but had some questions for which I thought it would be best to consult the experts.

On the service package, I've decided to get a 4 year service package. There are two options. The first one costs around 1.5 lakhs and covers the basic service. The other one costs 2.7 lakhs and additionally covers wheel alignment, wipers, and brake pads. I changed my brake pads and wipers last year and am inclined to get the cheaper package. However, the only thing I'm worried about is wheel alignment and balancing. In my previous car, (Verna) I used to get it from third-party for pretty cheap (under 2K if I remember correctly). Is there something special or different when it comes to the German trio or can I still get it done outside without any challenges?

Secondly, for extending my warranty to 5th and 6th year, Mercedes are asking an eye-watering 2.35 lakhs. This seems rather exorbitant to me and I'm wondering if I should even get it given the low running. The other option is getting it from this company called Edel Assurance for 1.5 lakhs. But I'm not sure how reliable they are. GTO had mentioned them in a post a couple of years back but wanted to check if anyone has had any experience with them?

Here's what BHPian VW2010 had to say on the matter:

If the additional coverages are just these three components, You should skip them. 1.2L for these three components sounds ridiculous. On the extended warranty, please stick with Mercedes. The perks or perils of owning a Mercedes lie not in the buying/driving experience but in the maintenance department. Do not take any short cut with Mercedes.

Here's what BHPian Sushil Pingua had to say on the matter:

Dear Brother, you can very well get your Merc's wheel balancing & alignment done from a reputed shop. I have seen Mercs in my place do it from JK Tyre's wheel balancing & alignment outlet for under Rs. 2000/-.

Here's what BHPian androdev had to say on the matter:

No need to buy a service package for such a low usage. You can get wheel alignment done from any reputed shop.

It's helpful to buy warranty I feel, even though it's very costly. Buy only from Mercedes, 3rd party warranty is an unknown territory in India. If you buy warranty for 6 years, there is a very good chance of Mercedes offering you goodwill warranty during 7-8 years.

Of course, given your low usage, you can get away without warranty and even without expensive insurance covers such as zero depreciation. Depends on your risk appetite and ability to pay out of pocket if something goes wrong. This is the usual dilemma when it comes to paying for insurance (warranty is also a type of insurance).
