Global NCAP rolls out updated crash test protocol

The crash test protocol now includes ESC, side-impact tests and pedestrian protection.

Global NCAP has introduced updated testing protocols for the "Safer Cars for India" and "Safer Cars for Africa" programs. Under the revised test regime, vehicles must be equipped with ESC and should pass side-impact and pedestrian protection tests to get a 5-star rating.

Global NCAP will conduct side-impact tests to evaluate the protection offered by the vehicle in such a scenario. It will decide if the test will be conducted on the driver side or passenger side of the vehicle using the biomechanical or modifiers criteria.

Global NCAP will also conduct tests to assess the risk of injuries to a pedestrian’s head, pelvis and legs. Additional points will be awarded to vehicles that come equipped with an autonomous emergency braking system.
