GM to offer bidirectional charging on its EVs by 2026

Bidirectional charging allows EVs to send power from their battery packs to the grid.

According to media reports, General Motors is planning to offer bidirectional charging across all its Ultium-platform-based EVs as standard.

The new feature is expected to be present in all of its electric vehicles by 2026. This is close to California's proposed mandate. The state is considering a bill to mandate the bidirectional charging feature across all EVs by 2027. Irrespective of whether the bill is passed, GM plans to introduce the feature well ahead of the deadline.

Bidirectional charging allows EVs to send power from their battery packs to the grid. Depending on the EV, the car's battery pack will be able to power anything from a household appliance to lighting up the entire home during a power outage.
