An Indian rises to become CFO of GM USA

You can take General Motors (GM) out of India, but you can't take India out of GM. The company has named 39-year old Dhivya Suryadevara as the next CFO. The Indian-origin executive will take up this role from September 1. She will replace Chuck Stevens who retires on March 1, 2019. Stevens will serve the remainder of his term as an advisor.

Since July 2017, Suryadevara has been the VP of corporate finance of GM. She has worked on closing loss-making operations of the automaker in places like Russia, Australia, India and South Africa. Apart from these, she has worked on the Opel disinvestment, acquisition of the Cruise autonomous technology business and General Motors' investment in Lyft among other projects.

Suryadevara has been with the company since 2005. She was the CEO of GM Asset Management from 2013 to 2017 and served as a Vice President (Finance) and treasurer from 2015 to 2017.

Born and brought up in India, Dhivya has got a Bachelor's degree and a Master's degree in commerce from the University of Madras. She joined Harvard at the age of 22 for her MBA degree. She is also a certified chartered financial analyst and accountant. Before joining GM, she has worked with UBS and PricewaterhouseCoopers

Dhivya Suryadevara will report to the company's Chairman and CEO Mary Barra. At present, Barra is the only woman to head any automaker. She was hired in 2014.
