Mahindra Thar 4x2 spied for the first time

Mahindra could offer the Thar 5-door in 4x4 and 4x2 configurations.

Mahindra is all set to introduce the 5-door version of the Thar sometime next year. Reports suggest that the carmaker could offer the more practical version in both 4x2 and 4x4 configurations.

Now, a new spy image of what appears to be the Thar 4x2 has surfaced on social media. It shows the interior of the car, especially the centre console area. As you can see, this test vehicle has the 6-speed manual transmission, however, the 4x4 lever on the left is missing.

The Thar 5-door will be positioned as a more practical alternative to the 3-door version. The longer wheelbase of the Thar 5-door would make it less suitable for extreme off-road environments anyway. So, a 4x2 version would make sense for those looking for a family SUV that would be used primarily as a highway cruiser.

That being said, the engine options will remain the same. These include a 2.2-litre diesel producing 130 BHP and 300 Nm and a 2.0-litre petrol that makes 150 BHP and 300-320 Nm. Both engines are likely to be offered with 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic transmissions.
