VW India to localize production of EA288 2.0L diesel engine

Volkswagen plans to localize the EA288 2.0L diesel engine later this year after ramping up local component sourcing for the 1.5L diesel engine it produces at its facility in Chakan, Pune. The EA288 2.0L diesel engine powers a wide range of cars produced by Volkswagen AG worldwide, including the Skoda Octavia and Audi A3 that are sold in India.

The EA288 engine family has been developed for VW's MQB platform with displacements ranging from 1.6L to 2.0L. The MQB platform underpins several new VW group models and will underpin many more in the future as well. Volkswagen feels the collective sales volume will be enough to justify the investment required to localize production of the engine.

Upcoming cars such as the new-gen Audi A4 and new Skoda Superb will be among the models offered with this engine. The motor will be compliant with the BS VI emission norms that will be enforced from April 1, 2020. While localized production will help control costs, it will also help in speeding up the supply chain and reduce the time taken for supplying spare parts.

Audi A3 facelift caught on test

Audi's baby sedan is due for a mid-life refresh and a test mule of the facelifted A3 has been spied. The mildly updated car features a look that similar to that of the new A4. Visible changes include a tweaked front bumper, a new front grille and restyled headlamps.

There are no visible changes to the rear, but since the car is still in its early stages of testing, the final production model is likely to feature additional updates. Any changes though, will be minor in nature. The interior will feature updated upholstery options and may get a digital instrument cluster along with an updated infotainment system.

While powertrain options are likely to remain unchanged, minor tweaks to boost efficiency and reduce emissions can be expected. The changes seen in the sedan will also be replicated in the hatchback and cabriolet versions.

Audi A3 and A4 could get manual transmissions

German luxury carmaker Audi, is considering launching manual transmission variants of the A3 and A4 sedans in India.

At present, the A3 and A4 are available with automatic transmissions only. However, the company believes that in India, there is a strong demand for manual variants. The Q3 SUV accounts for 25-30% of Audi's sales in the country. Of that, about 10-12% comes from the manual version of the car.

The Q3 manual cost about Rs. 3 lakh less than the automatic. The A3 and A4 could get the Q3's MQ 350 6-speed manual transmission. They are also likely to be priced lower than their automatic siblings.

If the A3 and A4 are launched with manual transmissions, it will make them the only ones in their respective segments. Audi's competitors, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo, have revealed that they have no plans to launch manual versions of their cars in India.

At the same time, Audi has revealed that it does not plan to launch a hatchback to rival the Mercedes-Benz A-Class and BMW 1-Series.
