TVS Apache global sales cross the 5 million mark

TVS is rumoured to be working on a naked version of the RR 310.

TVS has announced that the cumulative sales of its Apache series have crossed the 5 million mark.

The TVS Apache was introduced in 2005. Since then, it has spawned a range of models that can be divided into two categories: Naked and Super Sport.

At the lower end of the spectrum, you have the RTR series, which includes the RTR 160, RTR 160 4V, RTR 180 and the RTR 200 4V. The top-of-the-line RTR model comes equipped with preload-adjustable suspension, adjustable brake and clutch levers, riding modes, a slipper clutch and dual-channel ABS.

TVS introduced its first Super Sport bike in 2017, in the form of the Apache RR 310. The bike shares its underpinnings with the BMW G 310 RR.

TVS is also rumoured to be working on a naked version of the RR 310. It is said that the new model could be based on the BMW G 310 R and might be called the Apache RTR 310.

The new Apache RTR 160 4V is based on a double-cradle frame and measures 2,035-2,050 mm in length, 790 mm in width and 1,050 mm in height, while its wheelbase is 1,357 mm. The seat height is set at 800 mm and the bike weighs between 143-147 kg depending on the variant. The fuel tank capacity is 12-litres.

The bike comes with a new fuel tank with checkered flag decals and front cowl design inspired by the RTR 200 4V. It features a smoked headlamp with integrated U-shaped LED DRLs in the front, an LED tail light in the rear as well as a digital instrument cluster. The new RTR 160 misses out on clip-on handlebars and split seats offered on the 200 cc version. The 'shotgun' style exhaust though has been carried over. The bike rides on conventional telescopic front forks and a monoshock rear suspension.

The RTR 160 4V is powered by a 159.7 cc, single-cylinder, oil-cooled engine. The carburetted version makes 16.2 BHP @ 8,000 rpm while the EFI version makes 16.5 BHP @ 8,000 rpm. Rumour: 2018 TVS Apache RTR 160 launch on March 14, 2018

According to a media report, TVS is likely to launch the 2018 Apache RTR 160 on March 14, 2018. A test mule of the bike was last spotted in July 2017 and the spy video indicates that the new bike will feature updated styling similar to the Apache RTR 200 4V. The bike is also expected to receive an updated engine as well.

This will be the RTR 160s first major overhaul since its launch and will be based on new chassis. As per the spy video, it is likely to borrow the fuel tank design, headlight, tail light and instrument cluster from its higher capacity sibling. However, unlike the RTR 200 4V, the RTR 160 will get a single-piece seat. Besides, the 'shotgun' exhaust will be carried over to the RTR 160 as well. It will ride on conventional telescopic front forks with a monoshock in the rear and it will come equipped with a front disc brake with a rear-mounted disc brake that could be offered as an option.

The 2018 RTR 160 is expected to receive an updated power plant. Media reports suggest that the single-cylinder, air-cooled engine will come equipped with an oil cooler as well. Power and torque output are also likely to go up. Currently, the 159.7 cc engine produces 15 BHP @ 8,500 rpm and 13.03 Nm of torque @ 6,500 rpm and comes paired with a 5-speed transmission.

The new Apache RTR 160 will compete with the Honda X-Blade in the Indian market.

VIDEO: TVS Apache RTR 160 facelift spotted testing in India

View Forum Discussion

TVS appears to have started testing the RTR 160 facelift in India, as a test mule of the same was recently spotted on video. The overall design of the facelift is similar to that of the RTR 200 4V, though it gets some new elements to differentiate the design.

As compared to the 200 4V, the new RTR 160 gets a new brushed silver panel on the side, a single seat setup instead of the split seats on the bigger model and a rear drum brake. The front telescopic forks appear to get slightly thinner tubes, while the rear houses a mono-shock. On the other hand, the fuel tank design, headlamp layout, instrument cluster and taillights look similar to what is seen on the RTR 200 4V.

TVS is expected to boost the power output on the RTR 160 facelift. In the current version, the bike gets a 159.7 cc, single-cylinder air-cooled engine that churns out 15 BHP and 13 Nm of torque, while being mated to a 5-speed gearbox.

The new Apache RTR 160 will compete against the likes of the Suzuki Gixxer, Honda CB Hornet 160R, Yamaha FZ-S and the recently launched Pulsar NS 160.
