Sergio Perez tests positive for Covid-19; to miss British GP

Formula 1 driver Sergio Perez has tested Covid-19 positive. Subsequently, he will miss the British GP scheduled for this weekend.

The Racing Point driver is currently under self isolation rules as per the UK law. This is a 10-day period that will also rule him out of the 2nd race at the same track in the following weekend. The 2nd race is dubbed as the 70th anniversary Grand Prix to commemorate the 70th year of the Formula 1 championship.

This will leave the Racing Point team without a driver for the weekend and it is rumoured that either Stoffel Vandoorne or Esteban Gutierrez could step in. Both the Mercedes reserve drivers are accessible to the Racing Point team. It is also possible that Nico Hulkenberg could be the one racing for the team. The FIA Race Director has stated that such a change in the team would be approved in the current situation.

While the Australian GP was cancelled after a McLaren staff tested positive, it has been noted that all stakeholders want the race to go on with the person who tested positive undergoing self isolation along with those who have been in close contact to him.

Sebastian Vettel wins the 2018 British GP

Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel has won the 2018 British Grand Prix ahead of championship rival and Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton. Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen came third.

Hamilton started from pole but was overtaken by Vettel before turn 1 due to a poor start. He later spun on the very first lap after clashing with Raikkonen, which dropped him to 18th place. Raikkonen was handed a 10-second time penalty for the collision. He served the penalty when he came into the pits for a tyre change on lap 13.

The safety car was deployed after Marcus Ericsson crashed at turn 1. Both Red Bull and Ferrari decided to pit under the safety car, while Mercedes opted to stay out on track. Vettel rejoined behind Valtteri Bottas and ahead of Hamilton, who was followed by Raikkonen and Verstappen. The safety car was out on the track again when Carlos Sainz (Renault) and Romain Grosjean (Haas) collided. With Vettel on fresher rubber, it didn't take long for the Ferrari to get ahead of the Mercedes. Bottas continued to lose more places after being overtaken by Hamilton and Raikkonen. In the end, he had to settle for fourth place.

Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo finished fifth, while his teammate Max Verstappen had to retire due to a gearbox issue. Nico Hulkenberg (Renault) finished in sixth place ahead of the Force India of Esteban Ocon. McLaren's Fernando Alonso finished in 8th ahead of Haas driver Kevin Magnussen. Pierre Gasly (Toro Rosso) came home in 10th place. However, due to a post-race penalty, Gasly was demoted to 13th place and Force India's Sergio Perez moved into the points.

After winning the British GP, Sebastian Vettel has extended his lead over Lewis Hamilton in the Driver's Championship. He is now 8 points clear of the British driver.

Lewis Hamilton wins the 2017 British GP

Lewis Hamilton won an action-packed British GP, while his teammate Valtteri Bottas, finished in the second place after taking a 5-place grid penalty for a gearbox change. Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen took the final podium place, despite a late scare which forced him to pit for a set of new tires. Sebastian Vettel too dropped to seventh after suffering a puncture with just 2 laps to go.

Hamilton led the pack throughout the 51 laps after starting from pole position. An aborted start due to a stationary Renault on the track meant that the whole field was forced to take an extra formation lap before the lights went out.

Championship leader Sebastian Vettel who started from P3 on the grid had a slow get away. Red Bull's Max Verstappen was quick to capitalize on Vettel's slow start and stormed into P3. The fight between the two continued until Vettel finally pitted after being unable to pass Verstappen. Meanwhile, Ricciardo in the other Red Bull was making great progress at the back of the field.

The safety car was deployed in the early part of the race after the two Torro Rosso cars collided in the Maggots-Becketts complex. Vettel was the first of the front-runners to pit, followed closely by Verstappen. A blisteringly quick out lap by Vettel ensured the undercut worked. But, it was Ricciardo who provided the best entertainment as he made his way up the order from P19 to finish in fifth place. Nico Hulkenberg secured sixth for Renault ahead of the Ferrari of Sebastian Vettel.

The two Force India cars of Ocon and Perez finished in P8 and P9 respectively, ahead of Felipe Massa who secured tenth for Williams. His teammate Lance Stroll could only manage P16. Vandoorne finished in P12 ahead of the two Haas cars of Magnussen and Grosjean. Sadly, Alonso had to retire following a power unit issue. For Sauber, Ericsson and Wehrlein managed to secure P14 and P17 respectively. Kvyat, after taking out his teammate finished in P15.

With this win, just 1-point separates Hamilton and Vettel in the championship battle. Next-up is the Hungarian Grand Prix on July 30, 2017. Current World Driver Championship standings are:

1. Sebastian Vettel - 177 points

2. Lewis Hamilton - 176 points

3. Valtteri Bottas - 154 points

Lewis Hamilton wins his fourth British Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton has won the 2016 British Grand Prix at the Silverstone circuit. This marks the third consecutive victory for the Mercedes-Benz driver on his home turf, and his fourth British GP win. Meanwhile, Hamilton's teammate Nico Rosberg managed to cross the line in second position, but faced a 10 second penalty after the race stewards noticed that Mercedes team had breached the newly implemented radio communication limitations. This pushed back Rosberg to the third place, while Red Bull's Max Verstappen was promoted to second.

The Silverstone race started under a safety car, since the circuit was drenched due to a heavy shower just before the start. But the track soon dried off within a few laps, prompting the teams to switch from wet tyres to intermediates, and eventually to slicks.

Hamilton led the race throughout, while Rosberg and Verstappen fought for the second spot. Eventually, it was Rosberg who managed to hold on to the position.

Things took a turn when race officials slapped a 10 second penalty on Nico Rosberg, owing to the fact that the Mercedes team gave illegal instructions to him over the radio. On lap 46, Rosberg developed gearbox problems, and the team instructed him to switch from sixth to eighth gear, thus avoiding seventh. The race stewards claimed that since the new regulations state that the driver must drive the car alone and unaided, Mercedes' aforementioned instruction was a breach of the Art. 27.1 of the Sporting Regulations. Thus, Rosberg was demoted to third, while Verstappen was elevated to second.

Mercedes-Benz plans to appeal against this decision and penalty.

Meanwhile, Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo finished fourth, followed by Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen, and the Force India duo of Sergio Perez and Nico Hulkenberg. Toro Rosso driver Carlos Sainz crossed the flag at eighth position, while Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel and Toro Rosso's Daniil Kvyat completed the top-10 list.

After the Silverstone British Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton has managed to cut down his teammate's lead to just 1 point. The table standings now are:
1. Nico Rosberg - Mercedes - 168 Points
2. Lewis Hamilton - Mercedes - 167 Points
3. Kimi Raikkonen - Ferrari - 106 Points
