Govt. rejects BYD's US$ 1 billion investment plan

BYD had plans to partner with Hyderabad-based Megha Engineering and Infrastructures.

The Government of India has rejected the proposal submitted by China's BYD to set up a 4-wheeler manufacturing facility with an investment of US$ 1 billion.

BYD had plans to partner with Hyderabad-based Megha Engineering and Infrastructures. The two companies had earlier submitted their application to the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) to set up an EV unit in Hyderabad.

It has been reported that the DPIIT has rejected the proposal on security grounds following consultations with other departments.

BYD is the largest producer of EVs and plug-in hybrid vehicles. It had plans to build a range of EVs, from hatchbacks to luxury models in India. Currently, the company offers two models - the Atto 3 electric SUV, which was launched in November 2022 at a price of Rs 33.99 lakh. The second model is the e6 MPV, which is priced at Rs 29.15 lakh (ex-showroom).

BYD plans to invest US$ 1 billion to build EVs in India

BYD is looking to partner with a Hyderabad-based company to manufacture EVs in India.

China-based BYD is looking to invest US$ 1 billion to build electric vehicles and batteries in India. 

According to a media report, BYD has submitted a proposal to manufacture EVs in India in partnership with Hyderabad-based Megha Engineering and Infrastructures. The two companies are said to form a joint venture and plan to build electric vehicles ranging from hatchbacks to luxury models in the long run.

BYD is the world's largest manufacturer of EVs and plug-in hybrid vehicles. Currently, the company offers two models in India. These include the Atto 3 electric SUV, launched in November 2022 at a price of Rs 33.99 lakh. The second model is the e6 MPV, which is priced at Rs 29.15 lakh (ex-showroom).

BYD also produces electric commercial vehicles. The Q1 electric truck was spotted at the Mumbai port earlier this year. It has a gross combination weight rating of 40 tonnes and is said to have a range of 200 km.

BYD aims to sell 15,000 electric cars in 2023

BYD also plans to expand its sales network and will increase its production capacity if required.

China-based BYD aims to sell 15,000 electric cars in India next year. To achieve its target, the company plans to expand its product portfolio by introducing a second EV and also increase the number of retail touchpoints. If required, BYD will also expand its production capacity which currently stands at 10,000 units per annum.

BYD currently offers the e6 MPV. Sanjay Gopalakrishnan, Senior VP, Electric Passenger Vehicle Business, BYD India, stated that the company has dispatched about 530 units to date.

BYD is gearing up to launch the Atto 3 electric SUV in the Indian market later this month. It is expected to be assembled in India from semi-knocked down kits (SKD).

Powering the Atto 3 is a permanent magnet synchronous motor that develops 201 BHP and 310 Nm, which is said to propel the car from 0-100 km/h in 7.3 seconds. It is rumoured to come with the larger 60.48 kWh battery pack, which has a maximum claimed range of 420 km (WLTP cycle).

The BYD e6 MPV is available in two variants - GL and GLX, with the latter getting an AC fast charging option.

China-based BYD is now offering its e6 electric MPV to private buyers in India. It comes in two variants: GL and GLX, with prices starting at Rs. 29.15 lakh (ex-showroom).

The BYD e6 was launched in November 2021. At the time, the MPV was only available for the B2B segment.

The e6 comes with features such as a touchscreen infotainment system, 6-way adjustable driver and front passenger seats and leather upholstery. The GLX variant gets an AC fast charging option.

The BYD e6 uses a 71.7 kWh Blade Battery that is said to offer a maximum range of 520 km (WLTC cycle). The battery powers a 70 kWh electric motor that has a torque rating of 180 Nm. The car can reach a top speed of 130 km/h.

The e6 MPV supports AC and DC fast charging. The company claims that the battery can be charged from 30% to 80% within 35 minutes using a DC fast charger.
