Toyota signs MoU with Maharashtra govt. to set up a new factory

Toyota will invest Rs 25,000 crore into the new manufacturing plant.

Toyota Kirloskar Motors (TKM) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Maharashtra government to set up an automobile manufacturing plant in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.

According to Toyota, it will invest Rs 25,000 crore into the new facility, which is expected to generate employment for 8,000 people and an additional 16,000 people will get employment in ancillary units.

The new factory is expected to begin operations in 3 years. It will manufacture both ICE and electric vehicles and have an annual production capacity of around 4 lakh units.

This will be Toyota’s third manufacturing unit in India. The carmaker currently has two units in Bidadi, Karnataka, which is also being expanded. In 2023, Toyota announced an investment of Rs 3,300 crore to expand the production capacity of the Bidadi plant by 1 lakh units annually. It is expected to become operational in 2026.

Ather Energy to set up its 3rd plant in Maharashtra

The new facility will have an annual production capacity of 1 million units.

Bangalore-based electric 2-wheeler maker Ather Energy will set up its third manufacturing unit in Maharashtra. The new factory will come up in Aurangabad Industrial City (AURIC), located in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar.

Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, recently met Ather Energy co-founder Swapnil Jain. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Fadnavis confirmed that Ather will invest over Rs 2,000 crore in the state.

The Deputy CM also revealed that the new facility will have an annual production capacity of 1 million 2-wheelers and batteries. It is expected to provide employment to around 4,000 people.

According to Ather Energy, the location of the plant was chosen with the aim of reducing logistic costs and hastening the delivery of finished products to customers across India.

The third manufacturing unit will more than triple Ather’s total production capacity. Currently, the company’s two production units have a combined capacity of 4.2 lakh units.

Bajaj Auto sets up a manufacturing unit in Manaus, Brazil

The Dominar range of bikes will be assembled at the factory in the initial phase.

Bajaj Auto has expanded its global footprint with the inauguration of a new manufacturing plant in Manaus, Brazil.

Bajaj Auto’s new facility is located at Av. Do Turismo, nº 13.529 - Bairro Tarumã. Spread over 9,600 sq mt., the plant is equipped with engine assembly, vehicle assembly and testing facilities. The production capacity of the plant is 20,000 units per year, operating on a single shift.

According to Bajaj, the Manaus factory has been designed with advanced, automated production lines and integrated quality control systems. There are multiple conveyor and transfer systems. It utilises the Protheus ERP system to streamline its manufacturing, supply chain management, finance and HR operations.

Construction on the Manaus plant began in June 2023. The Dominar range of bikes will be assembled at the factory in the initial phase.

Tata to build Jaguar Land Rover cars at Tamil Nadu factory

Some reports suggest that the new factory could be used to manufacture JLR's upcoming EVs.

Tata Motors has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the government of Tamil Nadu to set up a new manufacturing unit in the state. The new $1 billion facility will be used to manufacture Jaguar Land Rover models.

If the latest reports are true, then it would be the first time that JLR cars would be manufactured in India from the ground up. It is said that the factory will not only build cars for the domestic market but will also serve as an export hub.

Tata Motors acquired the British luxury brand in 2008. The company currently has factories in the UK, China, Brazil and Slovakia. JLR models sold in India are either imported as completely built units (CBUs) or assembled using CKD kits at a plant near Pune.

Tata Motors announced its plans to set up a plant in Tamil Nadu in March. However, the company did not disclose any details regarding the type of vehicles that would be manufactured there. It is still not clear as to which JLR models would be built at this facility, but some reports suggest that it is likely to be used to manufacture the brand’s upcoming EVs.

Rumour: Tesla to partner with Reliance to manufacture EVs in India

Tesla plans to set up a US$2-3 billion electric vehicle manufacturing plant in India.

Recently, there have been reports in the media suggesting that Tesla is scouting for locations to set up its proposed EV factory in India. It is now said that the US-based EV maker could partner with Reliance Industries to manufacture its electric cars in India.

According to a media report, Tesla is in talks with Reliance Industries regarding a potential joint venture to establish a manufacturing facility in the country. The discussions are said to be in the initial stages.

Maharashtra and Gujarat have reportedly presented attractive land proposals to Tesla for its manufacturing base. The company is also said to be in talks with the Telangana government.

Tesla plans to set up a US$2-3 billion electric vehicle manufacturing plant in India. The factory is expected to have a maximum capacity of 5,00,000 units per annum. The carmaker might also consider setting up its own battery plant at a later stage.

Maruti Suzuki expands Manesar plant's capacity by 1 lakh units

Maruti aims to nearly double its production capacity to 4 million units per annum.

Maruti Suzuki has set up a new assembly line at its Manesar plant, expanding the factory’s annual production capacity by 1 lakh units.

The new vehicle assembly line has been added to Plant-A, which is one of three manufacturing plants located at the Manesar site. With this, the total capacity of the plant has increased to 9 lakh units per annum.

The new assembly line at Plant-A will enhance the company’s overall capacity to 2.35 million units per annum. Maruti aims to nearly double its production capacity to 4 million units per annum over the next 7-8 years.

Maruti’s Manesar plant became operational in February 2007. Plant-B and Plant-C were set up in 2011 and 2013, respectively. Models like the Brezza, Ertiga, XL6, WagonR, Dzire, S-Presso, Ciaz and Celerio are manufactured at this facility.

Tesla to scout sites for its US$3 billion EV factory in India

Tesla plans to build a new small EV, dubbed ‘Model 2’ at its upcoming manufacturing plant in India.

According to media reports, a team of Tesla executives will be travelling to India by late April to scout for locations to set up a proposed US$3 billion EV factory.

Reports suggest that Tesla will be focusing on states with existing automotive hubs, including Maharashtra, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu. The EV maker might also scout for locations around the national capital. However, sites in the aforementioned states would be preferred due to their proximity to ports, making it easier to export locally manufactured EVs.

Tesla plans to build a new small EV, dubbed ‘Model 2’ at its upcoming manufacturing plant in India. It is expected to be priced under $30,000 and will be exported to markets in Southeast Asia, the Gulf, Africa and Eastern Europe.

Tesla’s India unit is expected to have a maximum production capacity of 5,00,000 units per annum. The carmaker might also consider setting up its own battery plant at a later stage.

The government of India recently approved a new EV policy aimed at attracting fresh investments in the electric vehicle space. Companies will have to invest a minimum of Rs 4,150 crore in the country and will have 3 years to set up a local manufacturing unit for EVs with at least 25% localization.

Tata Motors to invest Rs 9,000 crore in Tamil Nadu

The manufacturing facility is expected to create up to 5,000 jobs.

Tata Motors has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Tamil Nadu to explore the possibility of setting up a vehicle manufacturing unit in the state.

Tata Motors plans to invest Rs 9,000 crores in the state of Tamil Nadu over 5 years. The new manufacturing facility is expected to create up to 5,000 direct and indirect jobs.

The MoU was signed between PB Balaji, Group CFO, Tata Motors and V Vishnu, MD & CEO of Guidance, Tamil Nadu - in the presence of Chief Minister, M K Stalin.

Guidance is the nodal agency for investment promotion and facilitation in the state.

Tata's semiconductor fabrication plants receive govt. nod

The government has approved three proposals for plans in Gujarat and Assam, for an estimated cost of Rs 1.26 lakh crore.

The government has approved the proposals to set up three semiconductor fabrication plants in India, at an estimated cost of Rs 1.26 lakh crore.

Tata Electronics has joined hands with Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. (PSMC) to set up a semiconductor fab in Dholera, Gujarat, for Rs 91,000 crore.

According to IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Gujarat plant will have a capacity of 50,000 wafers per month and employ 26,000 people. The facility will also generate indirect employment for nearly 1 lakh people.

CG Power, Japan’s Renesas Electronics Corp. and Thailand’s Star Microelectronics will set up a semiconductor unit in Sanand, Gujarat, while the third unit will be set up by Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt. Ltd. in Morigaon, Assam.

US-based chip maker Micron is also investing Rs 22,516 crore in a chip assembly plant in India.

VinFast breaks ground on its first EV manufacturing unit in India

VinFast plans to introduce 2-3 electric SUVs in India, starting with the VF e-34 crossover.

Vietnamese EV maker VinFast has broken ground on its first integrated EV manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu, India. 

VinFast India's manufacturing unit is located in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, and is spread over 400 acres within the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT) industrial estate. The factory is being set up with a total initial investment of $500 million over 5 years. It has an annual projected capacity of 1,50,000 units and is expected to create 3,000 to 3,500 jobs in the region.

In addition to the manufacturing facilities, VinFast plans to establish a nationwide dealership network.

VinFast plans to introduce 2-3 electric SUVs in India, starting with the VF e-34 crossover. The carmaker also plans to bring the VF6 and VF7 electric SUVs to India.
