Next-gen Mahindra Scorpio to get rear disc brakes

A test mule of the next generation Mahindra Scorpio has been spotted yet again. The latest spy images suggest that the SUV will get disc brakes on all four corners.

The new Scorpio (codenamed: Z101) appears larger and features a completely new look. It is expected to be based on a ladder frame chassis. The SUV gets a typical Mahindra grille with vertical slats at the front, which is flanked by twin-pod headlamps. The upright rear fascia has a side-hinged tailgate.

The SUV is equipped with ORVMs that have integrated turn indicators, roof rails, side steps and is riding on multi-spoke alloy wheels. Unlike the new XUV500, the Scorpio gets pull-type door handles.

The Scorpio could be offered with a 2.0-litre diesel engine producing 158 BHP, paired with either a 6-speed manual or an automatic transmission.

The images reveal more details of the DRLs, headlamps and tail lamps.

More images of the production-spec Mahindra Scorpio have surfaced online, revealing more of the car's headlights and tail lights.

The SUV gets twin-pod headlamps and C-shaped LED DRLs on the bumper. At the rear, it appears to get vertical tail lamps, with the brake light extending up the D-Pillar. The Scorpio also comes with a side-hinged tailgate, ORVMs with integrated turn-indicators, roof rails, side steps, multi-spoke alloy wheels, and a typical Mahindra grille with vertical slats.

Mahindra has applied for the trademarks of the names ScorpioN and Mahindra ScorpioN in different styles in India. This has led to speculation that a more powerful or sporty variant of the SUV could carry this name.

It may be recalled that in October this year, the company had filed a similar application to trademark the name Scorpio Sting. This had led people to think that the manufacturer might be planning to sell the current and upcoming generations of the SUV side by side.

The next generation Scorpio is expected to be based on a ladder frame chassis. Spy images suggest that the SUV could get a redesigned exterior and a new interior featuring a touchscreen infotainment head-unit, new instrument cluster and steering wheel.

The new Scorpio is expected to be launched in the second quarter of 2021.

  • The Scorpio has a higher stance compared to the XUV500. But, it looks less butch than the current model.
  • The test mule was riding on 17-inch steel rims.
  • It had dark brown and black interior with beige upholstery.
  • It does not get the Mercedes-like instrument cluster of the new XUV500. It had a multicoloured speedometer.
  • It had a bench seat in the second row. This particular test vehicle did not have a third row of seats but the driver said that it was a 7-seater.
  • The car didn't have a sunroof but it appeared to have provision to install one.

Next-gen Mahindra Scorpio test mule catches fire

A test mule of the next-generation Mahindra Scorpio caught fire while it was out testing and the incident has been captured on video.

The video shows the test car engulfed in flames. Also, the front suspension of the vehicle seems to have completely collapsed.

According to media reports, the driver noticed smoke coming out from the engine bay. He stopped the car at the side of the road and before he could get any help, the fire had engulfed it completely. No one is reported to have been injured in the incident.

This is not the first time a Mahindra prototype has been involved in an accident. Back in 2013, a KUV100 prototype had crashed in the Nilgiri Hills.
