Re: The DSLR Thread

Had a chance to click some pictures with an EOS 5D Mk-II today, with the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 lens. I couldn't get the AF working no matter how I tried, even looked at the manual and verified what I did was correct.

Could that be a specific issue or I was missing something? The camera is my company's property so it has no real owner to ask this. It's a pity that Camera is sitting in the shelf all the time with shutter count in the range of hundreds.

Re: The DSLR Thread

Clevermax, I wanted to know why your signature says Program mode is for professionals. If the program mode sufficed, then why not just an advanced point and shoot instead of a DSLR?

I'm a beginner myself, and I ask out of curiosity. Or am I just taking a rather tongue-in-cheek signature more seriously than it was meant?

In the last few days I added 3 new lenses to my collection:
17-55 f2.8
70-200 f4L
100 f2.8L Macro

100 Macro is just tooooo good!

Samurai,

All prices are rounded off,

Canon 17-55 f2.8 = 59k
Canon 70-200 f4L = 37k
Canon 100mm f2.8L = 53k

Purchased at Foto Circle in Bangalore.

I use a Canon 400D and a 7D.

Somehow for portraits, 400D offers subdued and less noisy images than the 7D. 7D is a speedmonster

People & Landscapes - don't go longer than 150mm.
You NEED a wide range below 55 for landscapes.

I would suggest one of the below...
1. 18-105 - Good lens to start off - but plastic mount (to keep cost down); you need to be a little careful - not as rugged as the pro quality lenses - but good.
2. 16-85 - Better build, Metal mount, costlier than the above. Better quality. Suits your people+landscape purpose like the 18-105.

I would love to have both these lenses (and I will eventually), just can't figure out what one to get first.

Thanks Rudra!
Hi:

I think your kit lens would be just fine for landscapes and general photography so long as there is decent light. Since you mentioned that wildlife is not a priority right now, a longer zoom may not be required.

For now, I would suggest you go in for the 35 or 50mm prime. This would take care of situations whent the light conditions are not good (i.e. low light). I would personally prefer the 35mm AFS since it has a comparatively wider field of view as compared to the 50mm on a DX body.

regards

Keep an eye on eBay. Sometimes they offer below 30k too.

I have been following this thread for quite some time now . I have already decided on 550 D for entry into the DSLR world .

I think the above kit lens is without IS , any suggestion from the gurus is most welcome

Thanks all.

I was looking at the same ebay link that you both have sent me. However, I was just apprehensive of getting it through ebay. I've ordered plenty of stuff from flipkart & ebay but those transactions were upto 10k max.

With flipkart I was a little confident about transit insurance, returns etc.

Swapnil since you got the camera through the same guy from ebay, how was the experience?

EDIT: I just spoke to Naresh (guy who has listed this on ebay) to check whether I would get further discount if I pick it up instead of ordering it online (typical Indian when it comes to money huh :P) but he disappointed me stating that there is no ebay fee on this item, lol.

I got it from seller : gizmotree.

Ebay is quite safe. Just read the current user reviews before buying

eBay My World - modenterprisespvtltd

Looks pretty good going by the reviews and ratings, wouldn't you say.

To all, any pointers on how to ensure that the package seal is intact and there isn't any cheap duplicate of any item inside the package?
