Update on NH9 between Pune and Solapur

The road condition of NH9 between Pune and Solapur particularly between Pune and Tembhurni is in worst condition with lot of potholes and heavy traffic.
Eventually, this road has become worst ever accident prone area.
Road widening i.e. four laning of NH9 between Yavat to Indapur will start in third week of nov2009, will be completed in may 2012. During this period, this road will be nightmare.
For those who are traveling on this section of route, i suggest other options for safe, easy and fast driving toward Pune/Mumbai.

option 1---
solapur-ralatively good nh9 with heavy slow moving traffic-tembhurni-nh9-bad roads-indapur-left turn-baramati-jejuri-saswad-[A for pune-hadpasar-pune]-[B FOR MUMBAI-saswad-left turn-ketkawale-right turn-4 lane nh4-mumbai.

option2---
solapur-NH9-tembhurni-left turn-akluj-malshiras-phaltan-lonand-nira-jejuri-saswad-[ read option 1 for further details]

option3---

solapur-nh9-mohol-pandharpur-malshiras-phaltan-lonand-nira-jejuri-saswad-[ read option 1 for further details]

option 1 is shortest alternative among three.
I hope, road condition will be bad upto jan 2011.

If you are traveling during night, then i highly recommend option 1.

Note; mods, please move this post/thread if not proper.

Thanks Ashish for posting those alternative routes. They will be a boon to those travelling the Pune-Hyd stretch.

Cheers,

there are two routes.
1] kolhapur-miraj-sangola-pandharpur-shetfal-madha-vairag-tuljapur
2] kolhapur-miraj-sangola-mangalvedha-solapur-tuljapur.

in route 1, shetfal-tuljapur is district road.
in route 2, sangola-mangalvedha-solapur, roads are somewhat rough.

other option is
kolhapur-miraj-sangola-pandharpur-mohol-solapur-tuljapur. though roads are best in this section, distance and traveltime will be more.

there is one more road from mohol to tuljapur but i am not sure about its condition.

i recommend option 2 for safer side.

I wanted to go from Mumbai to Kolhapur.

Please advice me the Best and Safest Way to go.

I like the Expressway that ends at Pune.

All your inputs with as much details as possible will be highly regarded.

Any Ideas about a Nice Place to stay at Kolhapur(with Parking).

If the Roads are very bad, I can postpone it for a little time till roads become good. Do you know exactly the date when the Four Laning Work will start ?

From the tone of your post and that it is present in this thread (Solapur), I gather you are asking about the best route from Mumbai to Solapur.

Mumbai -> Pune -- expressway.
Pune -> Solapur -- 3 options mentioned in the first post by ashish pallod (in the reverse direction).

If you want to stick to the traditional route.
After you exit the expressway, enter the mumbai bypass, take a left turn under hinjewadi flyover, join the kalewadi main road, keep going straight (you will reach M G Road) (if confused, ask for directions to hadapsar), cross hadapsar flyover, then NH9 all the way to solapur. (the first 7-8 kms in Pune city after hadapsar flyover is 2 lane, then a 40 kms stretch is four laned, then the next 100 kms is really bad roads (very very bad section currently) till you reach Tembhurni. From then on around 100 kms you reach solapur.

I have traveled on a different route suggested by Ashish Pallod, which goes like this.
After you exit the expressway, enter the mumbai bypass, keep going straight on the bypass -> cross new katraj tunnel, shindevadi and you reach a toll post on NH4 -> kapurhol (approx. 10 kms after toll post) -> take left turn to Saswad (20 kms, drive through ghat section) -> in saswad ask for directions to Jejuri -> Jejuri (15 kms, very patchy) -> Baramati (50 kms, Nice 2 lane road) -> Indapur (50 kms, drivable)-> turn right into NH9 -> bad patchy roads till Tembhurni (20 kms) -> Solapur(100kms, good road but very heavy traffic).

I travelled the route 1 suggested by ashish this is a good road From Indapur to Bharamati the road is good in patches but drivable. If you want to bypass Pune the better route would be Saswad to Kapurhol then Pune bypass.

I do intend to go to Kolhapur.

Thanks all for the inputs. It looks like it would be advisable for me to postpone my journey in hope of better roads in the future.

@supercars,
this thread is for road condition of nh9 between pune and solapur and not kolhapur.
pune kolhapur road is nh4 which is 4 lane and is in best condition.
if you intend to go kolhapur and not solapur, then there is no problem about the roads from mumbai to kolhapur.

Ashish,

How about the road from Lonand - Loni Shirval - Shirwal (Join NH4 here) . Distance wise this seems better in google maps. Isn't this road in great condition? The added advantage of this being join the NH4 earlier. This might be better for Mumbai folks if the roads are drivable

Yesterday, i traveled on pune - pandharpur road and solapur-indapur nh9.

on pune pandharpur road, section between malshiras and velapur is really bad.
on solapur-pune nh9, potholes repaired between tembhurni and indapur.

for travelers between solapur and pune, i recommend usable route as----

solapur-nh9-indapur-left turn-baramati-jejuri-18 km bad road-saswad-[ for pune-saswad-hadpasar-pune]--[for mumbai- saswad-narayanpur-kapurhole-nh4-shindewadi tunnel--dehuroad byepass-expressway-mumbai].

Hi Ashish,

Does this advice remain good? Should one take the left at Indapur and proceed via Baramati, Jejuri and Saswad to Pune? Or is there a better route to get from Solapur to Pune.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers,

I drove from Pune to Hyderabad via Solapur completely on NH9, the road between pune and solapur is pretty much ok. I didnt find any problem in this stretch. I completed this stretch of Pune to Solapur by 3pm on 14-Dec-09.
