Although I do have a question here. How safe is a tubeless tyre on steel rim for offroading purpose? Should one consider putting tubes into tubeless tyres for using with steel rims?

I would have no issues on putting it on steel rims BUT would for sure would put tube into them for added precaution. (This is what I would do. Is this correct/not correct I don't know)

This reminds me that both Prithvi & Mukund are having tubeless on their steel rims. Need to check with them if they are having tube in them or just the tyre.

Cheers,

It's quite safe as long as the steel rims are not rusted or bent. Instead of putting in a tube & defeating the whole purpose of the tubeless, it's better you carry a spare tube with you which can be used in case you guys bend a rim or something.

SYJ - You're not getting traction because your tyres are worn out & nearly bald.

If the car is driven mainly in the city with the occassional off roading jaunt, are these still the best bet? Or will they be unsuited for extended use on tar/concrete?
Also, any idea how much these cost, say in a 235/75/15 size?

I think that they should be good for on-road also. By definition, A/T should perform equally good on both on/off road (with a little bit of compromise on both ends).

I have heard in my jeeper circles that these Geo's are the best bet currently in the A/T arena.
Not so good reviews about the BFG A/T ones from the ones who have them on their jeeps.

I think the size you mentioned costs somewhere around ~5.2K

Cheers,

Yes of course. you can go for the 255 also but that MAY require some changes/alterations to suspension, fenders etc to prevent the tryes from touching the body and during steering/turning.

With 235/ you have almost NO such issues.

The cost for 255/ is approx ~6K IIRC.

Good idea. I carry 2 spare tyres and wheels and one time I actually needed both. Another argument for the mm540, more room for stuff like this. I would not use tubes in a tubeless. I suspect all AT tyres will be limited in their capacity to void mud. For my little Himalayan adventures AT tyres are my compromise choice.

Goodyear has one for sale in India. I have no idea how it performs or its price but Goodyear has a decent reputation. Picture looks good but I have not seen the actual tyre. Anybody know anything about it?

Wrangler AT/R

I am wondering if the light weight of the Gypsy and mm340 offsets to an acceptable degree the inherent excessive wear that hwy usage can do to off road tyres.

One of the fellow Gypsy owner has this very tyre on his Gypsy. Must say that for a light weight Gypsy this performs quite well -- I have personally seen it perform quite well in mud.

For example, if you remember the coorg OTR where the Gurkha got stuck, this MG410 Gypsy with the wranglers was able to get the front 2 tyres on the other side on it's own and was just about to make it.

He has the 255 size on STOCK gypsy rims and does NOT use a tube in them.

Cheers,

Pics of Goodyear wrangler AT/R(s) on my Scorpio(2WD:p).Quite good performers.
