You second option - rebuild the Verito and sell it off. Then buy yourself a 4x4.
Thank you for replying. So, I cant use this gem of an engine in a Jeep or Gypsy. What a waste, I really wanted to use this engine and other car parts like power steering & maybe disc brakes, etc. to build something good. One of the mechanic I know says it could be done, or he is rather it 'may' be done by the way he sounds about it and I am scared it might end up being some sort of a 'JUGAAD'.
Rebuilding Verito isn't too exiting as its resale is already too low and being an accidental case it would not help its cause anyway. I also don't want to build a 4x4 that would be standing 24x7 in a mech garage.
So its time to hunt for a Logan/Verito body shell. Anything that involve cars is exiting anyways.

I was also thinking about Renault Logan/ Dacia Logan Pickup. But I guess converting it to those will make it illegal on road. And I am not too sure what purpose would it serve. So I think rebuilding Verito it is.

Before you embark on rebuilding the Verito find out
A = How much the junk dealers are willing to give for your car as is.
B = How much will it take to rebuild the car.
C = How much can you sell it for after rebuild.

If C > A + B, then it is financially viable, else just sell it as is. Even if you make less than 10K profit, it is not worth the time and effort spent.

Difference is huge, I got a couple of quotes that are both under 75k. If I rebuild this, which is a 2011 Verito D4 which has done 27K Kilometers, it holds a resale value of around 2.5L and more. And its engine is still in good condition and running, all it needs is a new body majorly. I think rebuilding it is the way forward.

^^ It will take a long time and a whole lot of effort more, but selling parts individually might fetch you more value

Re: Need help: Buying a used 4WD (Jeep/Gypsy)

Apologies for reviving this old thread, but off late i have been longing to buy a proper off . roader (want to start off roading). Have waited long for the Jimny, but i am veering towards picking up a used Gypsy/Thar (more inclined towards the Gypsy).

I have been looking at a lot of classifieds, but all i see are dealer posts on auctioned gypsies, but i have my doubts on the quality of restoration on these. Would prefer a privately owned vehicle with known/verifiable history preferably.

Any suggestions on how to go about the hunt? Also, i have no clue on how much should a 10-yr old Gypsy cost, because i see prices all the way from 2-8L! Help is much appreciated here. I am open to other vehicle suggestions as well, primary focus is on reliability and ease of maintenance.

Re: Need help: Buying a used 4WD (Jeep/Gypsy)

Use Google. Look for Bangalore 4x4 clubs, Banglalore 4x4 equipment shops..these are good contacts for 4x4 sales. Go and talk to known good 4x4 mechanics. Go to the Bangalore auto repair area and ask around. Talk to taxi drivers in the area. Bangalore has a very active group of off-roaders. You will find a vehicle if you persevere.

Suggest you re-appraise your bank account. Off-roading can eat rupees. And, Gypsies are great but they burn fuel. Hopefully a Bangalore Team-BHPer will soon answer you here.

Ah... another "possessed" soul

It is not very easy to come by a "clean" Gypsy and if you are lucky enough to, then the cost might be prohibitive, now more so since it is out of production! That said, patience is the name of the game and as suggested by DD, be on the lookout via multiple channels. Do PM me your coordinates and I might be able to get a few leads across. Getting a "clean" Thar, on the other hand, is much easier albeit a more expensive affair. There are quite a few available on OLX/Quikr etc. and worth a look.

All the best...

Did you get lucky on your Gypsy acquisition journey?

If yes, do post pics!
If not yet, then you can connect with Ranjith Ballal or RAC Garage near ThoughtWorks Koramangala and he may be able to put you in the way of a decent second hand Gypsy.

Thing is with Gypsys it is very easy to get swayed by the looks and cosmetics. Hence ask for help from competent people like Ranjith.

Another connect, near Kaikondrahalli
Lake corner in Sarjapura Road you can go and meet Sardar who owns Sriraksha Motors a Gypsy garage. He may also be able to put you in the way of a Gypsy.

Then there is Nagaraj who operates Bro's Garage which is in Garvebhavipalya near Haralur. He is another chap who can help.

Suggest that you be prepared overall to shell out around 2.5 to 3 lacs for a Gypsy and over and above this, please budget for around another 1.5-2 lacs over a period of 1 year or so on your restoration, modification and customisation journey....

Enjoy the journey. Thats what really matters.
Signing off with a quick pic of my restored Spitfire just to 'motivate' you...Need help: Buying a used 4WD (Jeep/Gypsy)-imageuploadedbyteambhp1564921926.162150.jpg

Re: Need help: Buying a used 4WD (Jeep/Gypsy)

Hey guys.
Need help!
How is the spares availability for a '91 MG410 HT?
The reason i ask is because i have come across one for a sale.
Current owner claims it was civilian owned all its life and run only 9500kms, comes factory fitted with an AC, comes with lockable hubs right out of the factory which still work.
I am being extremely cautious, taking this with a pan of salt!
Have not seen the gypsy in person yet, and have asked the owner for pics of the RC, Insurance, etc
If documents check out then i might go and have a look.
This will not be my primary vehicle.
I don't plan on using this for specifically offroading, but driving to offbeat places, bad roads that i will encounter, occasional camping.

Is this an MPFI engine? If so not an issue at all.

Even if it is carb'ed version, only complication is the availability of the carburettor parts which again is not impossible. But as a thumb rule, don't expect everything to be available off the counter, but any good dealer would be able to source the parts from regional stockist in a day or two. Beauty of the vehicle is it's simplicity and general reliability.

Hi Jaggu.
I don't think so it would be MPFI. Was going through the threads here which mentions that until '95 gypsies in india came with a carburetted 970cc engine.
But Will check with the owner.
As long as spares are available day or two even a week is acceptable for delivery
I agree with the simplicity and reliability part. Had it been any other vehicle i would have probably stayed away.
Owner has sent over some pics, not sure how recent they are.
Is it okay if i post them here?

Hi, you will have to look around for parts, but with a bit of searching they are definitely available. A quick look on FB gypsy groups etc will lead you to the right people.

On the Gypsy, I am always a bit apprehensive when such low mileage figures are quoted. Especially when the vehicle is nearly 28 years old. That's hardly 350 km a year which sounds a bit odd. Or it may not have been used for long period of time which could lead to its own share of problems Anyways I am sure a closer inspection of the vehicle will lead to the truth. Do share an update when you get to see the vehicle.

Same here! I am being extremely cautious with the figure of 9500kms given.
I will definitely share an update.

What would be an approx fair price for a vehicle of this make and age considering everything works out?

Any contacts of mechs, FNGs in Mumbai specialising in gypsy?

Going by the forum MASS is not the preferred place were owners like to the take their gypsies as they are well not equipped.

I would try and close it below a lakh if possible. This is based on my experience looking for gypsys. I found a couple of 2000 year gypsys, carb as well, going for around 1.8 to 2 lakhs in Bangalore. So a vehicle which is 9 years older to that should cost about 80,000 - 1 lakh is my estimate. Mumbai prices may differ greatly though, since Bangalore second hand market is generally pricier.

I am sure others will also provide their views. Also, if the vehicle is in Mumbai, I would look at the rust buildup in case it has not been used in a while.

I am not sure about mechs in Mumbai. I am sure somebody else will help you out

Somehow I got it as 2001 in my head ya 91 would be carb'ed. Yes you can share the pics but more importantly, take it to a good dealership and ask them to give you mechanical evaluation of the vehicle. Check for rust since it is a old vehicle.
