Hi Wildon,

A couple of friends of mine are getting a car and their dealer had promised 2012 cars. He gave them 2 VINs MALBB51BLCM389740 and MALBB51BLBM382478. When questioned why one car is 2011 manufactured he asked him to change the B in the 10th character to C, so that it becomes MALBB51BLCM382478. Can you please find which of these are valid VINs and the details of it?

I figured its a 2012 because of the "C" but just wanted to know how do you decode the month and date.

[EDIT] Oops, I just went back through the thread and realized I should have been looking under the driver seat for the last two characters.

It was *A, so making it Jan 2012 model.

Now I've got another question. According to the decoding technique its a Jan 2012 model but your saying it was produced on 28th Dec 2011. So do they push cars which are made at the end of the month to the next month?

Correct. Manufactures do start production for new year models well before the current year ends as then only then can sell the newyear models from January ( or before that) onwards.

My Tata Manza to be delivered on 10th Feb 2012. Today I had first look of the car. The 10th Character of the VIN is B (which is 2011) and 12th character is "P"? I was expecting "M" (which is december). Seems the VIN code has been changed in TATA. If any one has the information on latest TATA VIN encodoing, please clarify.
